Pink Brea$ts
Posted by jrb53 on Thursday, August 5, 2021 1:35 PM

OK...now that I have your attention; is there a particular reason that there has never been a Group Build of pink things?  October (rapidly approaching) is Brea$t Cancer Awareness month and I went back to the beginning of the GB threads (2004) and could not find anything related to this topic.  Someone discussed a BCA contest back in 2009, but that's it.  Is there a "political correctness" factor I'm not aware of?

Should be able to find a wide variety of realistic subjects.  There was a WW2 pink recon Spitfire, the Mountbatten Pink cruiser in the RN, some Desert Pink armor vehicles, pink fire trucks, construction equipment, and there's the race cars, real and personalized.  Just hope we wouldn't end up with a cutesy pink Tiger Mk.I!

I realize everyone is covered up right now with GB's, but perhaps a short one that goes from October 1 to January 1?  It sure would be something different.  Anyway, just curious.

BTW- just previewed this post and found that for some reason I can't use the real word...so I went back and spelled it with a $.

As long as the absolutely no nudity rule is in force, you shouldn't have a problem, but that's just me.

I did a couple of the toon tanks for the silly egg GB.  The panther was painted hot pink in honor of guess who.....the tiger was done in white lower, orange upper and black stripes

Nice idea, agree with the no nudity, and plenty of charities to support.

May have a pink Gundam in the stash?

Very cool Piers, I like it!

I did get some pink paint with the idea of doing a couple of pink cars- a Cadillac and import with hot pink and 'Hello Kitty' decals. Guess those would fit? Not sure otherwise when I'll get to them.

How about the submarine from the movie Operation Petticoat? I think that would be a good one. Can't remember ,but wasn't Tony Curtis in that?

Be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it.

Yep, he was the scrounge and wheeler dealer, along with Cary Grant as the Capt of the poor old Tigerfish.  Never could fix that one engine.

I'd find something pink to build for this, like my Tamiya Pink Panther.

Some of the dazzle camo patterns on ships, especially in WWI, had quite a bit of pink too IIRC.

That was my 1st thought, but I can only find a 1/700 Balao class sub. I would have figured there would be a few 1/200 or 1/350 scale ones out there.

A Gato could probably work, I think the parascope shears are the big difference. Other than the preassure hull strength.

And I love the idea for the GB!

Was a Baleo in the movie.  You could use a Gato.  Hull length same, just little thicker pressure hull, and maybe some minor interior layout difference and equipment due to war patrol experience and upgraded gear.  Externally the big difference is the shears.  I believe that you can get 1/350 Balao fairwater and shears from shapeways.

Look for the old lionfish kit... something along the line of 1/240.  Old kit, kind of crude by today's standard, but it's a Balao.  Several on ebay, $10 and up, with shipping looks like most will come in at around $40.

I don't think this kit is the same year. But that's my first thought too!!!

I've seen someone build an 'Operation Pettycoat' sub at a show. I don't know enough about subs to know if it's the right model though...

I picked up the new/old Atlantis Gato and an old Revel Lionfish Balao.

I can make something work with them.

My entry: California Air National Guard UH-60.

Flying out of Coalinga CA coordinated with Cal Fire.

Italeri 1/72 Blackhawk, home brew decals and some weird pink paint.

If I can find a Shirley Muldohney dragster I'm in for sure! My mom and oldest sister are brea$t cancer survivors. This would be a great build. I haven't read thru all the threads yet so maybe some else has mentioned this, or something along these lines. Wonder if we could do a go fund me and make a charitable donation upon completion?

Loved Operation Petticoat.  I did some checking and found out that they used a Balao class and went hunting for one.  I found a model of a Balao, left off eferything except the machinegun on the tower and that long antenna and painted above the waterline pink with black under water.

I wonder if they used the same sub in the movie with Kelsey Grammer.

I found the Revell Shirley Muldowney pink dragster form a local club guy! I'm in. It's partly built and looks like i need to find some parts but it fits the bill and they were unobtainium on the standard sites

Way to go Chris!  Can't wait to see the finished product, as I'm sure you'll do her proud.

Was a little dissapointed with response, but I think my title scared off a few. Smile  Maybe next year we'll do better for October's Brea$t Cancer Awareness Month.

Looking forward to seeing what shade of pink you use.

Gamera- No problem...now we've got 8 months to find something! Smile  Do you think it would be too ambitious (but more appropriate) to schedule it just for the month of October?  Oct.1 to Oct.31?  Not like a Weekend Madness, but you would sure have to have your ducks in a row.  Also, in a effort to escape the Censors next year, you think we should change the GB title to "Think Pink"?

Chris- I just looked at Muldowney's original paintscheme. You're going to have two shades of pink to deal with.  Now I'm really looking forward to your build!

BTW- someone must be reading our emails...Jeep recently announced a version of Tuscadero Pink!  Fonzi would be proud.

Yeah, I'm in way too many GBs so far. I had thought about a hot pink car but it's going to take way more than a month and gloss coats on cars have been giving me fits. I think it's probably better just to wish you guys good luck!
