Okay, with some time away I decided to go ahead and attempt a paint correction. I sanded down the areas where I had issues and repainted the olive drab over those areas. Fortunately, Vallejo paints lay right down over old work and you can't tell. I cut some new masks and reshot the markings. I have a couple tiny touch ups to do now. I am pleased with it now. I can move on.

Not sure if it was ever discussed, but I would like to see this thread left open and running indefinately. I still have at least two kits to build for those who have left us.

Brandon: Ouch! Sorry to hear that- she was coming along so well....

Yeah, I missed the deadline. The friggn' top of the canopy on the P-38 vanished from the box. I looked around for it over the weekend and never found it. I finally just got disgusted and gave up- hopefully I'll have her done something before spring...

Hey Brandon, ouch! I think we have all been in your shoes once or twice!  Reminds me of when i dropped my nearly complete revell a-7 and the wing broke  clean off in a nice jagged line.  That said,  I Never really had an issue with Tamiya & GUNZE combos before,  but I do not use Vallejo either.. hope you can fix it but at times like this it is good to reflect on and remember it's just a hobby right?

The only place the paints lifted was over the Gunze white. Too slick for Tamiya and Vallejo to bond to. If I had painted Gunze over Gunze this would not have happened. I'll sand the call outs and prime and repaint then stecil and it'll be fine. I just need a break for now. I'm not upset, but this one has fought me ever since I closed it up. It'll look good in a few weeks.

Brandon I've had issues with that masking material the type that I'm using looks like that it's called Oramask 810.  The adhesve softened the paint and I couldn't remove it all.  I cut my own masks and prefer tamiya masking which I buy in sheets.

Well......sigh....this one has fought me every step of the way. Lesson learned here is two fold. First, don't paint anything over Mr Color because Tamiya and Vallejo just won't stick and they lift very easy. Second, paint the plane and then paint the sencils. I did the stencils and painted the plane second and it lifted. Now I have to repaint the sides and then stencil them. Frankly, I've had my fill of this build, so off to the shelf of doom for awhile. I'm tired of fighting this one.

The stars and bars are an easy fix, but he squadron numbers will take more work. I'm just not feeling it at the moment.

Not much to see here. Still a long way to go. I've got the marking down and the main colors. Tail numbers next, clear and some decals I can't paint then off to weathering.

Looks good BK, looking forward to seeing how she looks with the masks peeled off.

Mongoose: Working on it! The spinners don't look that even but they are done. Need to get the canopy finished up. I'm very close now...

Sorry for the late post on this one but I am rushing to get it done by year end. I have had some bad canopy fit issues with this one that just could not be overcome to my satisfaction so I have decided to complete the build under kit scheme rather than the Boise Bee. I have a Tamiya kit that I will use for that one. This one will be "Ill Wind."

I have completed assembly and I have made some vinyl masks for this kit rather than using the decals. After all, this is why I bought the vinyl cutter anyway. Stars and bars, call outs, and tail numbers will all be painted using masks. I'll try to update later this week. It's gonna be close.

BK

BK there must be a story to that blue wing? Did i mss it?  Blind Fold It's really piquing my curiosity now!

That blue will be masked over as well and finish the stars and bars, then the upper olive drab will go over it all. Some builders paint the main colors then mask off the insignia and paint it. With that approach I noticed a white edge on all the insignia that looks raised. So, to avoid that I painted the white first, masked, then blue, masked, then main color. Hopefully this will eliminate that edge. That blue will change with I get to weathering and not be a "blue" as it is now.

As a mask user it appears to me to be the color laid down for the dark blue part of the insignia.  I usually do the white first, if you look close you will see there is a mask under that blue covering the white.

Thanks Brandon! I think the panel lines may be a little much but I think when I put the matte finish down they'll fade a little.

Gosh has it been two months here!?!!?

Anyway the P-38 for Rigidrider is nearing completion. The prop spinners are giving me fits though. They have a stripe running though the middle of them and the masking I appled bled right though as well as pulling up half the paint. Sooooooo I ended up sanding the spinners down and am repainting them again....

Took the day off and hoped to get them done and then ended up fiddling around with the Christmas tree all day- oh well...

The panel line work really makes this one pop. Looks super good.

Ok, I finally got the P-38 for Rigidrider decaled. Too many stencils, I think I missed a few but no matter- I'm moving on to the panel lines now.

Dodgy....I had no idea Toshi has passed. I've had many chats with him - so kind - his wife really loved the enjoyment he got from the lovely models she'd buy for him, and he really appreciated her gifts of the models he loved so much. Sad news indeed.
I really liked him. Such a gentle, kind soul.

Yeah mate, he was definitely one of the world's gentleman. I miss his posts a great deal. If you want to build something in his honour, please feel free to jump in.
