Oh I will finish it.  It is also entered in the CAS group build.  I could have just cobbed the parts together and probably got it done it time, but it wouldn't have been done the way that I wanted.  I hate to finish with a miss so if we are still going, I may have another shot this weekend.

Nothing to be sorry about-you pushed the envelope and did a great job-looking forward to seeing the finished build.

Sorry Guys, I have to admit defeat on this one.  I will finish it but need another day or so.  Just couldn't get her into paint fast enough.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Caveman, you're a machine!  You just don't stop - what an effort!  Well done, mate, I take my hat off to you

Just a few progress shots before I start closing stuff up.  Looks like things should fit rather well and I'm counting on it so I can get into the camo paint quickly.  If anyone is considering this kit I would suggest an aftermarket cockpit set.  I'm rather dissapointed with the kit parts.  It would be OK in 72 scale but 48 deserves a little more attention.  I'm gonna dig a pilot out of the spares bin to hide the kits shortcomings.  The multi part wings fit perfectly and really look the part.  Sourced some finned napalm cannisters from Hasegawa weapons set A, as well as some snakeyes.

Congrats on finishing Hutch and we'll done! 

Got started about 10.00 this morning, finished off the lorry & started the gun:

Then some paint:

And, after a coat of Pledge, the decals.  This was the only part of the kit to disappoint - the carrier film extended so far beyond the small markings the wouldn't fit properly - when they're thoroughly dry I'll have to trim them, if I can.  The British roundel on the cab roof is a fair bit bigger than indicated on the instruction sheet, but is less of a problem.

Well, that's it.  Finished, and within deadline.  Apologies for the last-minute faffing about, due to several things but, ultimately, down to me.  Thank you again for your forbearance, and for running this GB - I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Looking good! I remember building an Airfix 1/76 88 and tractor. Good choice for a 48 hour kit.

So - the start line, 10.10 hrs GMT today - 

Moulding quality is not bad for a 1976 kit, almost no flash, fit is generally good, assembly in logical sub-assemblies:

Cab & body added to chassis:

Suspension & tranmission nicely rendered for the scale:

I did slip up here, but fixed the error by the drastic step of reading the instructions properly!

I'm leaving the wheels & the canopy off to facilitate painting, just the mudguards to add apart from that.  Tomorrow I'll build the gun.  This is also a series of sub-assemblies, which helps with time-saving.

I have been struggling with both bench time and "drive" just lately, but I have time off between Christmas and New Year, so I will be building my kit then

Hi, Bill - it's me, the Last Minute Kid here!  When I looked in the box at the Tamiya SAS jeep I had entered with, I knew it was more than 48 hours' worth, with all those accessories, (a lot more than I remembered) and just building the jeep without them felt like cheating.  So, I need to change my kit, if that's OK?  As my build is also a crossover with the Off to the Theater GB, I'm keeping the Desert War theme, but going for the Airfix 1/76 Bofors Gun & Morris tractor.  It's going to simplify the painting, but there's still a fair bit of building to do, and lots of very small parts.  I have - very presumptuously - started the build this morning.  If it's OK to continue, I'll post pics but, if not, I'll step down from the GB, any fault is mine alone.

Here we go the GeeBee is done! 37 hours and I can go to bed. I will do better photos tomorrow. And the Scale Master decals bled red colour whan I used the setting solution.

Thanks for running the Group Build Bill, I remember in my first go at the weekend GB Buddy was very welcoming and inclusive. RIP Buddy.

Hmm, looks like the photos that were showing are not any more. These are the first photos that I was taking with the phone rather than the camera. I will have a play around to see if I can get them back.

I know what you mean about the two square foot rule, but I often employ the left arm sweep which creates more space...

So now the decals are on and it is looking like it is happening. Nicely printed Scale Master decals, but the colour is not like the box top and the big rego is not as long as  the engraved marking

Test to see if I can recover the ones that no longer show.

Do scrape all of the red, otherwise you'll end up with a pink mess. Ask me how I know.

You have a beautiful model set up there.

Once again proves Morrison's Third Law of Modeling;

"No matter how large the workbench, there will always be exactly two square feet of available modeling area".

Four light coats of italian red rattle can

Ugh! masking off reveals lots of bleeds around the deep recessed of raised panel lines.

Sleep has let my brain formulate a recovery plan - scrape back the red bleeds then repaint the white. Start with a brush and see how that looks.

Still going -  all received a few coats of white primer

Then masking - started the wings with circles cut to the diameter of the scallops

And finally the result of two hours of masking before I head of too see how badly I can go with a red rattle can

Awesome start!  I'll join in Wednesday evening sometime.  Still need to choose a kit and clean up the bench a bit.  Keep going!

Some great work here guys, really great to see the standard is as good as ever.

So now it is my turn to take the standard back down.

This year's victim is a 1/48 Testors GeeBee racer, on the inside it says Hawk models 1960. The position of each  decal and the scalloped edges are moulded into the plastic, I am just accepting that's what it is.

The one piece wing goes in through the opening once the fuselage halves are together, and thoughtfullt there is loads of space allowed to get it through.

But the fillets on the wing are wider than the slot so I need to space up to 1mm to get it roughly even. Thought that was easier than cuting a mm out of the centre of the wing.

Bill-it has been a very nice tribute to Buddy and thank you for organizing and spearheading the GB-I'm already looking forward to next's years Madness. 

Not sure if I'm going to attempt a build this weekend, but either way, I've enjoyed (as always) building something and watching everyone's great builds-always amazes me what you folks can do in 48 hrs.

Caveman-very nice build indeed-love the camo scheme-and great idea to add the Hetzer for a size compairson.

Also nice touch (and very thoughtful) on the message on the tank-Lewbud was an important part of this forum.

Caveman that scale comparison really made it come to life. I was looking at your stand and the background thinking it was big but that comp made the size come to life. You're doing Buddy proud with each build!

Well, this is it.  At least as far as I'm prepared to go anyway.  Just ordered some metal tracks and decals for her.  The kit tracks are dissappointing and the decals are MIA.  I took the splinter camo idea from the German railway colors.  Seemed appropriate for the size of this monster.  Then just added my own script.  I also included a few pics. alongside a Hetzer that I built for weekend madness a few years ago for giggles.

Half time show.  All the construction pretty much done.  Moving to the paint room. 

I have to say, my word is this thing huge!  I know there was only one lower hull actually built and that is probably a good thing.  This kit is longer than a 48 scale jet so I don't know where I'm gonna put it when finished.

Everything is tight, but would need some surgery to get to a proper ride height.  Or just bash it with some 4X4 parts..................

Strong finish there caveman! That yellow does pop. It's got a good shine to it. you have to wonder why amt thought it was a 4x4 haha wow they lifted that body. You weren't kidding about the kit bein a modeling challenge that's for sure.

Hey Guys.

Going through some vicous weather today.  Power is spotty at best so I'm trying to keep my air tanks full and my lanterns charged.  Quite a wild site.  Powerlines popping and flashing all around.  Like a 21 gun salute while I work away!  Not alot to show at the moment with most parts in a dry down stage so I got some pics. while I could.

I LOVE this hobby!  This kit is the reason.  All warped and messed up needing ingenuity, persistance and a little luck to get it to work.  Needed everything short of a blowtorch to get the bumpers on.  First paint show they need a little more clean up, but should work out fine.  Decided to go with a yellow for this one.  Don't know why, but always liked yellow on this body style.

Our local club president gave me this kind of advice years ago. It just adds a level of interest for people when you have some element from the natural environment as a backdrop for your model.

Here's a final shot of my Su on the completed base. It really shows why they chose this camo scheme for Angola. Pits the whole build into perspective in my mind.

Bufflehead those are 1/4" acrylic rods. I'm trying to figure out a way to get them to stay in the exhaust cans.

Ernest-I'm enjoying your K-wagen build-I've not seen one before in grey-great choice of color schemes.  I picked up some decals from Mike's Decals of Jerry Cook's Pinto-solid color and figured the decals in the kit were probably marginal.  Downside is that I want to get the build to match the real car detail wise and I really need to not do that....I'll share the good, the bad and the ugly of this kit after I get everything buttoned up.

I got the paint on the Pinto last night and Futured this am.  Later this afternoon I was able to get the small bits painted, chassis & engine assembled, body decaled and then the engine & chassis together:

Need to add a coat of Future or semi-gloss early am and then get the headers and side bars attached afterwards.

Mongoose, the Flanker is fantastic!  What a wild camo scheme and I luv the in flight stand!  What did you use for the attachment?  Looks like clear rods of some type?

Got the Kubelwagen done 2 hours early!  Decals went on early this morning, but all the detail work took quite a while.  Here she is in glorious Panzer Grey!

 The only problem I had was the fit of the windshield into the frame.  I think its a bit too large to fit all the way in, but I didn't notice that until I took the pics.  Oh well, it will have to do, I have other things I need to get caught up on!  

Bill, thanks for hosting the GB this year!  I'll try to enter another one before the end of the year....should have at least one more free weekend this month!

That turned out great!  Very cool camo scheme.  I really like seeing planes in flight and I wish that manufacturers gave us that option.  What are your final plans for the base?

Well it was done on time but I screwed around working on the base since it's in flite and has these missiles on the bottom and didn't get the final pics posted. Here's how she turned out. 

Looks like a light weekend build this time. In between running around with my daughter this weekend I've gotten the Flanker almost done.

Bufflehead this is a good 1st time kit. Goes together nicely and fit is really good. No complaints at all on my part.

Looking forward to seeing that Ridge Runner Bob!  Are you going to paint it up like on the box?

24 hr check in - detail painting almost done, just have to tackle the folded canvas cover.  Once that's done I can correct some booboos and get a gloss coat on before the day is over.  Plan is to work on decals and a bit of weathering on the home stretch tomorrow!

Got started this am-going with the MPC Ridge Runner-Modified Pinto

immeadiatly primed the body & wheels.  decided to build the sub assemblies and then prime those

couple of football games to watch and then I'm hoping to paint the body tonight.

That is one neat little sub razor!  Came out great, congrats on getting it done it time!  48 hrs is no joke!

2 hours later - a little pre-highlighting (B&W technique) and the base coat is on.  Used Vallejo Model Air - Anthracite Grey for the base, Khaki Brown for the seats.  Going to let the whole thing dry for a couple of hours while I take care of some errands.

razor, the Seehund is looking very sharp!  I like the replacement clear bubble hatch, really adds to the look!  How much crew did that little sub carry?

mongoose, quick work on that Flanker! Would you recommend that kit for a first time Flanker build?

16 hours in and primer is on.  Actually only 8 total hrs of real work so far as I got a late start this morning. Going to let the primer dry for an hour or so then start with some preshading.

Mongoose, sorry I considered a camo paint job for this, but decided that my first Kubel would be in panzer grey.  However I really like this kit and will most likely get another one and do her up in camo!

Off to a good start Mongoose!

on my end 15hrs in and the Su is in primer. Just put the light blue on the bottom. MRP this time, a first for me. Sprays as well as people say it does. I had this color in model master as  well. Both look more green then blue but we'll see how it dries.

Model is complete except for the decals.  I will give it a quick clear coat before going to bed and do the decals in the morning before my 10 am deadline.  The clear hatch is not glued yet.  Oops... guess the model is not quite complete.  I'll leave that till last after the dull coat.

Speaking of which.....the Tamiya Kubelwagen is a sweet little kit.  Its gone together very well with nary a fit problem.  6 hours in and most of it is assembled, just a few fiddly bits that will be installed after painting.

The seats and wheels are just dry fitted on as well as the spare tire.  Windshield held in place with a little ball of poster putty.  Its going to the spray booth in the AM!

A very productive evening for modeling. My wife is working midnights so house to myself...will have to post this on the aircraft forum as well, this is a great kit! It has raised panel lines which worried me. Fit is so nice that I haven't lost a line yet. Using perfect plastic putty to avoid additional risk of that as well. Just a little of that needed, check these out

tomorrow some final putty and then primer. By afternoon I should be ready for some color!

And we're off!  

Plan is to work until midnight or so and get most of the basic assembly done so I can put a primer coat on first thing in the AM.  Unfortunately I have an appointment in the afternoon so I hope it doesn't cut into the bench time!!

Since I have a bunch of little stuff on the shelf let's do another one! I've got a set of Aero Masks for this Flanker so I think it's doable. 

razor i was wondering about the size. That must have been cramped inside! Looks pretty cool. Must be a fun build

I am 15 hours into my build and I feel I am in good shape.  just the propellers left to glue on but they will be a challenge to clean up once I get them off the sprue.  As I said this is a Revell repop of an ICM kit so I have had to dry fit everything and do some carving to get stuff to fit but I am happy with the results so far.

I also have the main hatch to do but it is supposed to be a clear bubble but the kit part is the solid grey.  I will attempt to vacuform a clear one using the kit part as a mold tomorrow.

I'm starting mine tomorrow evening! Did a search in the stash and decided on this one.

This will be the first Kubel I've built and am eager to see it complete and on the shelf!

Nice base Tony!  I think I recognize that old Matchbox base.

I have a couple of relatively free days so I have pulled the trigger.

This is where I was at after a couple of hours.  The hull was a decent fit thankfully but this being an ICM repop there are no locating pins etc.  low parts count though so I am hoping construction won't take too long.  It is surprisingly tiny.  I will have to take some scale comparison photos at some point.

OK build 'leftovers" is on for this weekend.

Deadline for this build will be midnight on Sunday.

Well, I'm calling her done with an hour and a half to spare.  Usually I'm right down to the wire.  Took me forever to mask and unmask her, no decals here!  I'll post some better pictures when I have better lighting.  I always seem to finish at night.

Done was a super fun build, tried a few new things, textured the hull and turret, and did hair spay paint distressing. Had a lot of fun on this one.

ok....here it is....12hour overdue, but I got it done!

She is ugly, close up, but should look just fine in my display case...

 

This kit fought me to the bitter end.  The last step necessary was to install the glass.  The kit glass was horrendous.  I ended up making the front glass out of plastic blisster packaging, and the side glass ( as you can probable tell, were made from white glue, and are still drying.

 

Overall, I really like how this scheme turned out on this kit.  But, I will probably try to avoid AMP kits in the future! (at least for these weekend madness builds!)

 

Also, I was trying to drum up support and others to join in on the group build, and I did get a couple...search the hashtag #weekendslammerbuild on facebook and the instagram to check them out!

I'm really pleased with the weekend. I got this model done, laid 100 square metres of turf in the backyard, then dug out and prepared and laid another 30 metres of it on the nature strip.

Hey guys!  I lost my internet last nite so wasn't able to post.  Not that there is much to see.  This kit is rather simple but goes together well.  Basic pit and only a few parts for the fuse.  Mostly together and in first coat of paint.  With ten hours to go, I should be OK.

Justin, that's too bad. This challange can be difficult. I missed the deadline last year on my first try. That's going to be cool though.

Well, despite having been at it for the better part of 16 hours today, I've had it.  I am beat.  My back and hind end hurt from being in this chair.

I can definitely get is finished this weekend, but, as my 48 ends at 7:30 tomorrow morning (EST), I am just not gonna make it by then.

This short run kit fought me just about every step of the way, with misaligned molds, flash, seam lines on just about every part...on top of the poor fit...but, here is my final update for day two...It probably didnt help that I was going for a what if/dieselpunk Santa Fe transport, or that I was trying a new silver paint....

Well, her is Big Chief, as I head to bed...

After all the bodywork was 'adequate', I but Big Chiefinto black primer, using Mr. Surfacer 1500 in a rattlecan:

Then, I called in reinforcements (the modeling fluid) to try and help get it across that goal line after getting the base silver on...

I used Vallejo's Liquid Silver' Alcohol based silver as the base color

and decided to decal the fuselage so that I knew exactly where to tape out for the red upper/front surfaces...

I made it ! Here's a couple of rather hurried photos of the finished model, within time, then a couple of better photos. I had to rush out 20 minutes before close to take my daughter to work. I've realised that I'd broken on of the road wheels, and omitted to attach the machine gun. Both of these have now been done.

I've done some colour modulation, but its hard to see in these photos. The white circles were masked and painted, as the decals were off centre and yellowed. The red stars were cut from them. It got a quick pin wash and some weathering and chipping with various pencils, due to lack of time, or I would have taken it further.

The Josef Stalin III tank remained in service until 1955, slightly outliving it's namesake.

My final day one update.  It has been 24 hours since I've began, and this kit is not treating me in a very friendly way!  I am way behind schedule.  I wanted to have this wearing its primer pj's in the dehydrator last night before I enst to bed, but instead, 'Big Chief' needed that time to help dry/cure the Sprue Goo filler.

I am beginning this morning with sanding.  lots and lots of sanding.  This one is really testing my "Basic Modeling Skills"....lol

Some great looking builds here, can't wait till i get a chance to read thru them 

up at 6 this morning and into the paint booth. I managed to get her wrapped in Mr Surfacer last night around 1230. What a saving grace that is in a spray can!

Primer and the first layer of paint are done. Not sure what direction I am going to take this. But I am really enjoying this build.

A bit more progress on my Airfix JS III tank. I like them to be a little heavy, so that they sit better on the tracks.

It's basically built now, and moving into the painting phase.

Two hoursin, here is my first update!

while this is a simple kit, there is A LOT of clean up, with misaligned molds and flash, and all on some flat out TINY parts!

While the paint was drying I sprayed Alclad for a base for chipping.

I've had my Alclad for a few years, what is it's shelf life? This is what happed after spraying it. Has anyone seen this before? It started crating webs. Easy to remove but odd.

Now 10:00 and have the fuse together.

11:00 and I have the canopy masked, on and silver touched up.

After I completed that we went to family for Thanksgiving. We returned around 9:30 pm and I installed the engine and sprayed chipping fluid. Now I have time to catch up the pictures. Tomorrow comes the camo, decals and hopefully finish.

 

Hey I know what that is  !

Your paint is drying in the air, before it hits The model. In your case most likely due to the thinners that are in the paint for spraying evaporating over time. My solution is to add mr color leveling thinner to the paint, then respray. Usually about 25% at this point but experiment a little to find out what you need. It goes away right off the bat so it'll be easy to tell. Brush the dusty dry paint off first of course. for me it usually brushes right off. If you don't have that but have another thinner of your choice give it a try.

Tony that looks like some nasty pin marks on the barrel. Nice job cleaning THAT up!

After about 90 minutes, I've cleaned up the ejection pin marks and part numbers from the hull side pieces, cleaned up and drilled out the main gun and built the turret.

Quik update before I start potatoe peeling

wings and fuse cemented together and drying for a bit. I put some tracing paper over the raised "panel lines" they used for the scolloped paint and made a pattern for them. Will sand them off and paint the final red color on the wings.

OK things are quiet in the house and my turkey duties are done for now so I'm gonna go ahead and get this build started!

I have chosen to go with a naval theme this year.  I will be atempting the Revell Seahund.  No holiday here in Canada tomorrow but I have some time off coming up starting next week so maybe a Sunday afternoon start for me.

No leftovers for me though...I always chose something small, like a 1/144 Revell Bakurat.

This year a GeeBee Racer and a Sea Flanker. Challenges for sure I think...the GeeBee because this kit is flash central, definitely old molds.

This weekend I'm planning to start the GeeBee Racer. Open to opinions on the kit red and white of Doolitle or going with the alternate black and yellow Victory Girl?
