Bill, looking forward to this build as well.  Ive never had to fix a vac canopy that has been damaged like that before but i think i would start by warming it up in hot water and try to gentlt pop it back up.  I doubt youll be able to get rid of the crease though.

 

I may just carve something and paint it gloss black. 

But I fell out of the time frame. When I finish I will post it down the thread. Meanwhile my wife has Covid and I'm busy taking care of her but not getting sick at least until she's able to take care of me!

lesson learned- preflight next time!

Looks great mongoose.  I like the display a lot.  What is the story with the turquoise ordanance?

 

you know i couldn't find anything on the color. I tried to match it as well as possible to the ordnance layout they had for the aircraft. It presented a unique display that i thought fit the jasdf color profile so well

Apparently 430 or so were built. It was an upgrade of the Yak-15, which was a tail dragger. There were a few of those in the early years of jets, with predictable problems.

The addition of a nose gear on the -17 meant that, because of the slender fuselage and forward position of the engine; the nose gear tucks up into a fairing but does not fit inside the fuselage.

Any suggestions from anyone on how to pop the canopy back to normal appreciated!

Bill that's really cool! I've never seen that aircraft before. Look forward to watching this build, looks like there's some great stuff in the kit.

0800 hours Wednesday December 28, 2022.

And we are off. 

It has a nice little resin cockpit.

Paint by hand the basics inside the shells and the resin parts.

One glitch- somehow the vac canopy got crushed during the years in storage.

I'm going in to work now. When I get home this evening I'll assemble this little bird. The exteior paint job is simple- green top and grey bottom.

Really a great kit. Made for exactly what these weeke builds inspire, finishing a kit and having some fun! No obsessing over intricate detail, just good memories to go on the shelf.

Got the tape pulled, decals on and satin coat applied by 530. That puts me in good shape to finish a bit early.

after that sat for 5hrs i went ahead and applied a flory wash. Love these washes. Given the Japanese roots here I decided to go yin and yang, black and white 

and white for the bottom

tried to soften it as much as possible without removing all the wash. I don't typically do this in this scale but for this i thought it would really bring up the interest level. Speaking of interest those ASM-2 Anti-ship missiles really are turquoise for the F-2 jasdf scheme

yep, quite easy when you got the day off and the wife is catching up on her sLeep! 

camo pattern is done and I'm on to the hinomaru.

You can just see the crazy color of the missiles in that 1st poc. Basically turquoise!

Just over 24 hours ahead in and I'm ready for masks. I need to go print them and grab some lunch. That should be the perfect amount of time for this paint to dry before I put any tape over it.

I may have to try some natural light at the end to get these colors to show up something close to what they are. The iPhone washes them out. Now my intermediate blue was mostly grey so i had to add 50% thunderbirds blue to get close. And, my sea blue turned out green over the grey primer! Wasn't counting on that. I've switched to Thunderbirds blue over that and it looks decently dark now. Not quite right but close. Only the daylight will tell i guess.

Forgot to mention, can you believe the canopy on this little thing had a seam line down the middle! I actually had to put some poster tac inside it to make sure I didn't split it in half while sanding. Way to tiny for my fingers to hold.

OK done for the night. All the major assembly for the F2 is complete. Most of the ordinance is done, saving some fins for tomorrow after things dry a bit and I can do a little bit of sanding to smooth things out. Should be painting first thing in the morning

I scanned in my masks tonight and rescaled them to 1/72 scale. Scanned a few of the decals as well in the hopes that I can print them and do a mask otherwise it's gonna be short a few decals ha ha

Hey thanks guys. One of the things I learned when I went to scan some stuff for masks was that the decals are totally shot. We'll have to see what I can make do with. Definitely got a coat them to try and keep them together. Here's where I'm at so far. Just finished up dinner for the evening and now I can get back to it

That's a great lineup Bufflehead and nice double build. 

I tried one of those easy build kits before and from what I remember wasn't too thrilled with it but yours turned out pretty nice.

Hi builders! For those of you (cough) who haven't started a build, it's not too late!

Whew!!  I didn't think I was going to make it but I managed to get this double kit 48 Hr build done!  Completed just past midnight, so its actually very early Monday morning!  Still the 7 AM completion time is 6 hrs away so that's a bonus!

Both are 1/72 Hobby Boss Easy Assembly kits.  

I'm really happy how the 262 came out, only problem was I lost the front landing gear door....its around her somewhere, it disappeared right when I was installing the lg.  Probably turn up in a few days when I'm cleaning the bench!

The 109 had some issues with the detail wash and subsequent flat coat.  I guess that happens when you rush things! .  It came out OK in the end.

Bill, thanks again for taking the time and effort to host this GB!  I really enjoy pushing myself to build kits for the yearly Weekend Madness!  I'll be busy with family the next two weekends so this might be it for the year!  I'll stick around and see how everyone else is doing!
