Strangely enough, I'm originally from down that way - we call it SOUTH WEST Victoria to distingush ourselves from Horsham, the well named Nhill etc (just kidding).

I'll check it out next time I'm down that way.

I've finally decided my entry for this GB. After all the debate on past nominations, I have decided (and bought) Heller's 48th Mirage & Roodecals. I'm planing an ARDU bird int Fanta Can Scheme, so any info would be greatly appreciated (thanks Rob for your help so far). I've ordered spare decals from Hawkeye Aust, and I'm waiting on resin conversion bits from Sandle Hobbies.

Didn't order the conv direct from Red Roo?

For good references, check out Motty's Aircraft Pages via Hyperscale. Anything else, let me know, worked on Mirages on & off from 83 to 88 and have some of the tech pubs.

Smile [:)] - when I read you reply post, cos you didnt quote it, I thought you had made the same GB nomination as me - [:0] - bit of shock.

I sent emails to Sandle Hobbies but no reply. I will check out Red Roo direct (I didn't know they had a website!!). I visit Hyperscale daily, so I will check out the Motty's stuff. Thanks for the offer of assistance, cos I definitely have some questions - stay tuned!!!!!!

Edit[:0]
I just checked out Motty's A/C photo resources, this place is fan-fCensored [censored]ing-tastic!!
thanks for the reference materialBig Smile [:D]

Just my luck. I was in Melbourne last weekend. I managed to get a couple of hours free of the wife and antique shops and visited Vic Hobby Centre, Hearns and The Hobby Place. Not much different to the shops in Wellington and Auckland, prices much the same with a similar selection.

What has this to do with the group build? Not a lot except I met up with Lee Tree and got the decals for my Bathurst Mercedes from him (thanks Buddy) so I can now finish off the car for the GB.

G'day Wayne,

Thanks for the kind words on the build.

The metal work of the model is covered in Tamiya AS -12, the aluminium dope is the Humrol aluminium metalizer, Tasman 'faded' decals and serial's, then coated with Dullcoat, the droped tailplanes are resin the is Hasegawa's Mk I trop in 48 scale. It's one of my entries of the GB, all I have to do is repair the Mk IIIa Hudson windows that tweezer launched themselves. Then it's finished.

Very nicely done - operted by 1APU and CFS also. It was still in service at Point Cook in Jan 45 when my Dad did his rookies there.

Interesting take on the anti glare panel and spinner - Steve Mackenzie has a profile of this scheme in the last IPMS NSW magazine. He's picked a small black panel and a red spinner from the AWM pics. I think Gary Byk had a similar pattern to the anti glare panel but also in black when he wrote his PM article years back.

Some bits of the Hurri survived its scrapping, but not much. The Base CO at war's end did a nice job of saving "1 of everything" for posterity. His successor wasn't so inclined and it was all scrapped on site or at Werribee, even the 109E, Sigh....

Yet another one to build one day!

Nice work on the Hurricane Lobbie whats the deal with the Guns did the A/C not carry any armament.
The Fanta Can scheme on the ARDU mirage, would that be the orange and white.

My next post will have some progress shots of the Spit's for the GB just have to get more batteries for the digital camera.

yeah - the orange/white scheme is the fanta can scheme (I just learnt that myself). I was scoping some other RAN a/c and skyhawks had some good camo schemes of dark n light grey (or blue-ish grey).

Also g8t work on the 'the lone RAAF Hurricane' Rob. Is that the only Hurri the RAAF had allocated in it's inventory?

J.S. If I can remember back to information given to me in my early RAAF Days, Comm Flight Aircraft were mainly used by Senior Officers to fly between bases in the rear areas and therefore were not armed. (ps I could be wrong with this info)

The orange and white scheme was mainly used on training aircraft for better visibility of the aircraft, it picked up its nick name around the time that the macchis were painted in this scheme mainly because the colours where very similar to a Fanta can. The ARDU Aircraft were painted this way to assist with tracking the aircraft during during flying and weapon trials. At a later date one of the ARDU mirages was given a Yellow and Green Scheme for the same reason.

For those that don't know ARDU stands for Aircraft Research And Development Unit.

J.S.Harrison,

The Hurricane had it's weapons removed, as it was never used as a combat fighter.

Dave Edwards,

The Hurricane was never scrapped, it was dismantled and crated for storage, it's still at Point Cook.

Here's the history from the DF serials website:
"Ex RAF V7476. To be erected at 1AD 13/08/41. Erection completed 16/08/41. To CFS 06/09/41. To 2CF 27/02/42. To 1AD 05/04/42. To ANA Mascot 30/08/42. To 1CF 18/01/43. To 2OTU 04/02/43. To 1CF 01/03/43. To Special Duties Flight 12/04/43. To 1CF 20/04/43. To 1AD 12/09/44. To 1CF 13/11/44. To CFS 14/01/45. Approved for disposal 17/01/46. To Point Cook for disposal by CDC 08/02/46. Authorised for write off 13/05/46. Passed to DAP 21/12/49. On the 29/01/51 it was sold. Some reports have it as wrecked at Werribee, but the aircraft was purchased by Mr Reg Dyke at Mirboo North and transported there."

If the Hurricane is still at Point Cook, it's not on the Museum AIU inventory - I did the stocktake twice with then Curator WOFF Laurie Perry when I was posted there in 83 & 84.

I have some photos of the bits of this a/c that have survived if you're interested, in a collection in Gippsland.

Dave Edwards,

The lone RAAF Hurricane was never on the RAAF Museums inventory and to my knowleadge it's where the ASR were stationed at Point Cook.
I've been contracted by the RAAF's Officer Training School at Point Cook to build model aircraft significant to the RAAF's history and have been, doing this project for the past 18 months. There is a long way to go before this is finished.

The RAAF's associations of wartime squadron personal help with a lot of information regarding this project, on service aircraft, the only time the RAAF museum helped me with any details was with the Boston which was done as A28-7, which was what the school wanted, as the old AMT kit was inaccurate, they allowed me to look over 'Jessica' and crawl around inside the ropes, so that I could get everything corrected for the model kit.

I just thought I would put in a few 'in progress' photos to get this topic moving again. I know they are not the best photos but thats life :) The A-20G is going to be done as D-UD 'Hilda Shane' 22 Sqn Noemfoor 1944 using the Aussie Decals set.

Harvs73 a photo of the spitfire would be great,i'm still a bit unsure of the genuine markings for this a/c,i have references that show a white fueselage band, and another with the older rounder tail.

Guy's,

The Spitfire RG-V is A58-758, it's the ex Col Pay aircraft, which is now owned by David Lowey of the Tamora Aviation Museum in NSW. It's accurate in it's colour scheme, as when Col Pay had it, the colours where close but not close enough. Harvs your pic's of the Spitfire are they from Avalon.

How many are using the Hawkeye decals for your GB subjects, a few tips: their very thin in both print and paper, they roll up when first put in water, sliding them onto your model is best done with the aide of a 18mm chisel brush, they don't like fingers moving them around. Settle them down on the model, with a brush before applying decal setting agents to them.

Just for info on the Hasegawa kit. The grey nurse is the alternate version in the kit that I am building, there is a difference in the marking and painting of the kit to the finish of the model in Hyperscale, the kit version indicates a white spinner instead of a red one, does not have the Ace of Spades marking on the tail although this is on the decal sheet to be used for the CR-C model.
