Tazman :

The mesh over the engine intake screens (we know them as FOD screens) is actualy two layers of steel mesh. The inner layer is composed of an interwoven medium gage steel wire mesh, with the space between the wires big enough to put a standard pencil through. The outer layer is a much finer, tighter woven steel wire about the consitancy of regualr window screening. During the winter months, its standard procedure to remove the bypass panels on the back of the cones to provide a steady source of air to the engines in case the screens ices over during flight, which in 10 years of flying on these things has only happened to me once.
I'll get those pics for you by Tuesday. I don'rt have my camera today & I wont be at work on Monday.

Wow! Many thanks, man! I'm sure I speak for everyone when I express our appreciation for this...below is my "wish list".

Pic of rotor detail
Pic of door on front right side...closed ( I actually would like to see the detail at the top of the "top" doorCool [8D])
A nice close up shot of one of the engines would be nice...

Hey, since you work on these tell me something...what is the mesh material that is in that "cone" that covers the engine intakes made of? In some photos it looks like brass, others steel...then it looks painted in some too...also, are the covers easily removed for maintenance? Taped Shut [XX] Sorry...I guess I could ask about a thousand questions about the Chinook...I'm just learning about it, and I'm really enjoying the experience.

Many thanks...

Hello all. I'm going to offer my services to you guys that are working on this group build. I'm in a unique position of being a modeler & a current CH-47D mechanic (hold the applause and/or boos). If you need specific pics of a certain area, post your needs & I'll try to accomodate you as best I can.

Thanks, Alby, those have proved to very useful for shots of my own model...
I've unfortunately found that this kit is lacking a lot of detail...but this is an OOB build for me, so I have to ignore it for now!Big Smile [:D]Sad [:(]

A little more progress, some interior shots...

And, test fitting the main body...

I'm planning on going but I have some things coming up which may require me to relocate to the Detriot area or near Midland, TX. As long as I'm still in IL or MI I do plan to go.
I will let you know once we get closer to the date. It would be cool if we can meet for lunch.

Tazman3, your at the same stage I'm in. Post some more pics when you get a chance.

Alby that is sweet!!! Good work!!

As for myself, I was working on the Revell kit but after an accident I decided to scrap it and start on the Italeri kit which looks alot better.

Hello All,
I finished one of my entries, the MH-47E. The trickiest part of the build was removing the standard CH-47D saddle tanks from the fuselage and replacing them with the larger tanks supplied in the kit. Other areas of fuss were the bottom fuselage plate and the canopy/nose piece. I added some extra warts and other protrusions that were overlooked (160th SpecOps helos are major antenna and lump farms). I also replaced the IFR probe with a piece of reinforced .80" styrene rod. New dual chaff/flare dispensers were also scratched from styrene sheet and rod (the set between the fuselage windows). I also modified the rotorblades to look more like composite type (added the 45 degree angle at the root of the blade). The finish is Model Master Interior Black, which was mixed with gray to produce various shades. The subdued OD lettering is from Cobra Co. After the decals were applied, a dark gray wash was applied to tone down the shading and the markings. Last details added were nav lights and exhaust covers (to hide the complete lack of detail in the cans). I'll add some RBF tags at a later date.

Cheers,

Ok, well, here is some preliminary work...proof I'm doing something! If the weather cooperates, I'll be shooting the interior colors tomorrow...let's hope the rain holds!

I'm actually going to try a new technique...I'm going to do some pre-shading. We'll see how it works out.

Later,
Taz

Geez, Frank...you were not kidding about that site. I'm gonna try to see what tail numbers are used on this kit and see if they are "real"...I'm sure they make those up sometimes, but it would be nice if it had some history.

Hey, seriously, thanks for the education...now I know! I'm not above learning something new...I claimed ignorance in the first place!Big Smile [:D]

Thanks again,
Taz

PS Does anyone make a kit of the "guns-a-go-go" ships?

Good morning Taz,

It's okay... actually, the Marines don't have any Chinooks, they use the Boeing CH-46 "Phrog" (Marines), or "Sea Knight" (Navy); in the U.S. Military, only the Army uses Chinooks. Below are basic comparison photos for reference:

For darn near everything you'd need as reference for building a Chinook, check out Mark Morgan's site. http://www.chinook-helicopter.com.......... or if you'd prefer to build the Vietnam era Armed/Armored version (ACH-47A), here's a site specifically for them: http://gunsagogo.org
(CAUTION: Don't go to either of these if you have something to do, like Work... or somewhere to go, like Bed) Wink [;)]

Good luck, Smile [:)]
Take care,
Frank

Cool [8D] Frank, is that you're way of saying that the "D" IS the Marines version? Heh, Heh...I told you that I didn't know much about the 'hook! Big Smile [:D]

Well, I got started on my Chinook..I'll be building the Italeri 1/72...I'll be doing the "D" Marines version. I haven't done a ton of research on the Chinook, so I'll be at the mercy of the instructions on colors, details, etc. I plan to build OOB.

I'll post some pics either tomorrow or Thursday, hopefully tomorrow.

Mine is completed, all but the detailing of the engines, and trimming of the rotors.. The Italeri kit allowes you to build it as a D, but the rotors need carpentry to fix the problem..

Here is a sneak peak, camera is crap..

It has been quiet in the forum for a while, but maybe everyone is in their final stage of getting ready ...
I am, anyway. My Chinook is ready painted, clear parts is to be attached and then decalling.
11 days left ...
