This is my FIRST GB! Big Smile [:D]

So, to get my first attempt off, I think I will go with a 1/48 scale P-38. I need to do some more research, but I am leaning toward the 2-man, radar equiped model. Anyone know who flew one out in the Pacific? Also, since I am new to this, what should I look forward to and such? Shy [8)]

I am working on the 1/72 Oscar now...the lines of that plane are really smooth and quite aesthitically pleasing...I was thinking of the Fine Molds kit, but will probably pick up the Hasegawa.

I've got an early 1/48 Hasegawa Ki-43 I laying around here somewhere, with the two bladed prop. It's a nice little kit. If I run out of projects by the time this GB rolls around, I may build this one as well.

Excellent! I am still trying to figure out what I will be doing. I am leaning toward a Ki43 Hayabusa in 1/48 scale, with PE and resin...gulp Confused [%-)]

Ok, it's official. I've found some great decals and have ordered them.

I'm building the 1/48 Hasegawa P-38F Lightining

Decals- Superscale 48-859 specifically the "The Flying Dutchman" flown by Lt. Edward W. Randall, 39th FS operating out of Guadalcanal. Cool [8D]

Cool, thanks JoeRugby for the info.
When I got home I remembered that I have the Squadron P-38 in Action book, and found several pictures of the P-38F in the South Pacific:

1. One P-38F named Nulli Secundis flown by Kenn Ladd serving with the 80th FS/8th FG at Dobodura, New Guinea.

2. Another photo of a P-38F with the 431st FS/475 FG, stationed at Port Moresby, New Guinea.

3. A third of a P-38F named Japanese Sandman II flown by Lt. Richard Smith of the 39th FS/35th FG at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal.

At least now I have a starting point to try to track down some aftermarket decals and markings. I'd really like to do Japanese Sandman II as I really like the look of the shark teeth on both engine nacelles. I swear, half the fun of modelling is all the research and learning all about the planes. Fun stuff! Cool [8D]

No problem, in as a tentative. Mexican Air Force in the Southern Pacific, that would qualify as fringe, most certainly!

Hang on to that "F" model! Cracked out my references and found something for you. 39th Fighter Squadron of the 35th Fighter Group operated the first P38F's on 27 December 1942. Check out the decal sites for markings, I would be very surprised if you could not find any.

ok... put me in as a tentative... actually the kit I started last night would have fit the bill perfectly (maybe I'll have to do a second if I can get the decals... you have to order them through a mom and pop type place in Mexico City) It's a P-47 of the Fuerza Aerea Mexicana that served in the Phillipines, Luzon etc... The only Mexican unit to participate in the war...

Of course I was just mentioning I feel like doing another Martlet in another GB... hmmm... this set does have one serving on the HMS Atheling in Indonesia resupplying the full size carriers...

JOE I will probably go with a Accurate Minatures "Gun Nose"B-25 G as one of the kits i was looking at has markings for a B-25 used to attack airfields and supply ships on and around New Guinea Besides it is one of the B-25's that had the 75MM gun in the nose HEH HEH BOOM

The P38E did serve in the Theatre, and quite early actually. My knowledge of the "Forked Tail Devil" is limited. However, a backdate project maybe in order or a good choice here. What were the differences between the E & F model...sounds like a job for Black Wolf! He is literally an encyclopedia!

One of the great things about the South Pacific is there sheer number of aircraft types that served is staggering! The only aircraft that has not yet been mentioned in my ongoing research is the P51. Imagine a WWII GB without a P51, seems almost sacreligous to a degree.

I will dig in some more this evening and let you know.

Ok, I have a 1/48 Hasegawa P-38 F. I was doing some research last night and have found very limited resourses on the F, and where it served, after market decals etc. Everything is for the J, L and other variants. So... I'm going to toss this out hopeing some of you might know more about it.

Did the P-38F serve in the South Pacific? The kit comes with decals for England and North Africa.... is anyone one aware of any aftermarket decals for South Pacific service?

Okay sounds good, a Boomerang would certainly qualify.

I am about 1/3 of the way in compiling a list of Squadrons/Sentai with aircraft types used. Will hopefully post before the weekend.

Yes, I did see the links-thanks. I've done research before on that site-very helpful.

No problem on not including CBI on this one. There are many other planes I'd like to build so that works out. Count me in-I'll declare a build later.

I will post a participants list once we have five confirmed. This may be a bit too personal ergo selfish, but I am planning for this to be my "breakout" from OOTB. The more participants the more helping hands of knowledge there will be. But I guess this can apply to everyone participating.

I will be updating page one with units that participated at some point in the SPTO, stay tuned. Heck, I may even put up an available kits list.

Quick question-are you including the China-Burma-India theater also? If not, no problem...just another reason to buy another kit! I'm a "definate maybe"-time frame is very liberal.

South Pacific Group Build 7 August 2006 to 7 August 2007

From Port Moresby to the Koda Trail onto Guadacanal and over to Wae and Bougainville and Rabaul

The campaign in the South Pacific was an essential element in the defeat of the Empire of Japan. Not only did it pit man against man and machine against machine, it was also man against nature. Dodging not only bullets but malaria and suffering blast furnace heat.

Starting 7 August to coincide with the invasion of Guadacanal the South Pacific Group Build will open.

Rules are simple;

Any aircraft to have served in the theatre, Allied or Japanese. All scales are welcome, All media is welcome, injection molded, vac formed, resin or even scratch built.

All PE, All AM...pull out all of the stops, we will have an entire year to complete...dio's are completely acceptable. Remember the conditions in this theatre were harsh, do not be afraid to weather.
