Sorry guys I ment to have these up a long time ago, but life has kept me pretty busy! I am making good progress on the old Aurora Fokker D-VII. I am pleased with the way the engine is turning out. The plug wires are made of brass wire and they were a bit of a pain to install, but I was so glad that I it. The paint is all by brush. I hope to have this one finished by the end of the month or the middle of Feb at the latest.

I don't know if this fits the rules as it was built before the start of the thread, but here it is.  This box scale F-89D by Revell was my first kit, which I know I built in 1956, or maybe 1955.  I broke the canopy frame on the first one, and pretty much smeared silver paint all over it.  I probably put some red paint on it too but that I don't remember.  I was 9 or 10 when I built it.  This one was built 7 or 8 years ago, and was my first NMF attempt, using Testor's metallizer paint.

Hello mph34, My wife knows that I need my "alone time," and yeah I was a bit cranky, but I am so very loveable the rest of the time Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg].  I tend to relax when I build - I forget all of the stuff I have to deal with for a while. She does support my building and even my collecting kits - I am trying to get most of the kits I had when I was kid. My next phase is to get the Aurora tanks. Anyway, my wife understands that modelling is an important part of who I am. She is a very wonderful lady.

Just before I met her I was at the LHS and saw a pile of oop kits and snagged a couple. I asked the owner about them and she said that one of her other customers was getting married and had to get rid of them. I am happy to say that my beautifl wife would not make do that!

Cheers,

Eric

You must have been a bit crancky Whistling [:-^] if your wife sent you off to work on a model......  Good to hear that your wife is so supportive of your hobby time.  Mine, she goes in waves.  Depending upon the events of the week, and if I've not been home much, I get that "look" if I go to the work bench.  Other times, she almost pushes me into building/painting.

I must admit my lack of progress on this GB Sigh [sigh] Ashamed [*^_^*]  I have the F-111 built, and I am in the process of sanding & puttying and sanding some more.  The Revell kit that I am using is from the 70's which when I built this as a kid, I thought was a pretty good kit.  How we wise-up when we grow older! Laugh [(-D]

The firefly has advanced a bit again. I was originally planning on using filler to level out the wheel wells but had to get rid of that idea and use card instead. Now the fun part is to detail the wells with all those little bits.

Hi all, sorry it took me so long, but I finally got started on my B-17. So far I've gotten the cockpit finished, and most of the scratchbuilt radio room done (man, this thing is a lot of work!). Hopefully I will be able to get some pix posted sometime in the near future.

Here are some images of the interior of the 1/72 Airfix Firefly I am building. I spent a day having fun doing it all, especialy the seats. I have yet to add the radios iin the rear compartment and some further detail in the cockpit.

I have finally started the Airfix Firefly as I received the replacement canopy from Airfix. I have started to sand back the surface rivets and am trying to find my book on the firefly so I can do a bit of scratchbuilding in the cockpit, wheelwells etc to fill the areas out a bit.

I'm buying a new camera today or moday so I should be able to do some excellent shots of the kit in progress. I'm buying a Panasonic DFC FZ-30.

I believe the actual scale of this kit measures out to 1/36.

Since there are no rules, I may replace some of the undetailed or omitted parts with some parts that are more detailed.

I was doing some cleaning of my basement model storage space and discovered a box of an even older tank model. The kit I will build is going to be the old Lindberg JS 3 Stalin tank. The old  Lindberg kits had one piece track/suspension sets and underneath was powered by a small rubberband. If you turned the rear wheels backwards, it wound up the rubberband and the tank would roll forward on the floor.

Got all the portholes drilled, now putting on on a few doors and other little PE details and getting ready to paint.

Been pretty busy with other things so this GB has really slowed down for me.

I took a 1/48 Monogram Wildcat out of the box and started to play with that. I still have my KC-135 waiting patiently to be finished...

Welcome JayPack55. I presume this is the famous 1/48 kit?

I built it a few years back, and was very happy with it. Not much interior detail, but the outside looks great. I look forward to seeing it.

Okay, I FINALLY found my first "glue together" kit, the Revell B-17F, so I will probably be starting it soon. sorry I haven't been involved in this thread (I just got the kit last Saturday, and I have had kits that are already started from a while back to attend to...) I'll probablt start the build sometime within the month though.

Great work JWB! That cockpit looks good hiding in there. I really like the paintscheme on the P-47.

Yeah- I always add the legs and pants last. I test fitted the struts, then the doors. The struts are waaaaaaay to long. The mounting post for them is really deep- I could've just cut it off. But when I test fitted, it reminded me of when I was in elementary school, and at the years end kids would be walking around in jeans that were way to short- spindly ankles sticking out.

Honestly, the more I looked at it, the funnier it seemed. So I decided instead of fixing it up-leave it! Maybe I'm just lazy, but part of the appeal of it was just how much I loved it as a kid- warts and all. I've nicknamed it "Shorty", since the "pants" are so short.

So now it sits on my shelf, the other planes snickering about it's "high-waters"......

It's got a few other warts. I placed the roundels forward of the side vents instead of aft.... I literally looked at the pic on the computer, and by the time I got to the model desk, I'd got it wrong. (They say memory is the second thig to go..... can't recall the first). And I tried to print the correct tail number, but I couldn't get it to show up clearly when applied to the plane, so I used one from a set I had. The stripes are a bit too far forward, also.

But the wife saw it and said "Oh, sweety, it looks just like that airplane on your wallpaper!" so that was good enough. LOL

It's not exactly like the real bird, but it's close enough to sit on the shelf. Main thing is I had fun!

Thanks for the kind words!

By the way TAdan- that -51 you built looks great. That was the first kit my little brother built!

Well- I'm done.

More like "I can't see this 1/72nd stuff anymore, so we're calling this done."

I've still got to get a display case. This was the first I built when I was 8. I have a still wrapped kit in the box, and another vintage kit out of the box. I'm going to do a display case showing the boxed kit, the unbuilt sprues from the the opened vintage kit, and then this completed re-issue.

I started to get crazy with it- I put in a resin office- then decided to just build it more like a kid would- out of the box, no changing of parts, etc.

So here it is. Admittedly, it could've had a few more hours put into it. But with the braille scale my eyes, and 3 Accurate Miniatures 1/48 kits standing by- I said good enough. It was fun.

I'll be getting a display case later this week- I'll put up the final pics then.

How are everyone elses builds coming along? I am taking a bit of a break before I get back into my KC-135A kit. It is about half way there. Technically my KC-135 is also a "Memory lane" build too, but my last one was more recent than the Mustang.

If I get the mood I may be back to this GB with another Revell or Monogram oldie. (Ive got a 1/48 Wildcat, a 1/72 Uhu, and a 1/144 B-52 sitting in my stash...I built all of them ages ago...)

I didn't get any painting done last night, but I did get the hull and deck glued together.  I also have noticed that I can really do a lot to this little kit with brass rails, PE radars and guns, watertight doors, and portholes.  Gee, I paid .99 cents for the kit from Squadron yet will spend $30 on details.

The last time I built this kit, I think it took me 45 minutes.  Now, it may take me 45 days.  Boy how we have changed in how we build models eh?

Thats it, were on page 7 and I still only took the model out of the box just long enough to see what color of plasitc it was molded in and to lose a few small parts like a gun and the lifeboat..  So, tonight, even though it will be late, after the family is tucked into bed, I'm going to stink up the house and paint the hull.

I'm going to do this, I can do this, for it will be done.  Tonight!

Well I took the day off from work today. Smile [:)] I managed to get the OD sprayed. Testors MM. I added 5 drops of Dk. Green to the OD. Most of the other aircraft I have seen in this squadron in color pics were somewhere between OD and Dk. Green. I am happy with the color I got.

Next up is to spray the white ID stripes on the wings and tail. I would like to try and spray some Future on this one. I have never tried future, but I'd like to give it a try.

Well, I made some progress this saturday. I managed to get the underside of the P-51 painted with light grey. I used Testors MM enamel.

Next up will be some OD for the top of the aircraft...then some white squadron ID stripes and she will be just about done with paint. Smile [:)]

Glad to hear you folks have been progressing too.

Well, the paint is mostly on. Need a touch-up here and there. It's looking more like a P-47 now. It's drying, and once it's good and cured, I'll add some color trim to it, and then the final parts.

After that, I've got to find a display case.

Gee never knew how much I missed the PC, I was lost for three days with out it. Now I have the fun task of fixing every thing back on here.

Here's proof of my progress:

The fuselage has been thinned down around the area of the 'office'; the office itself is a mix of plastic, metal wire, foil, and bits and bobs from the spare parts (PE and plastic); the instrument panel is scratch, plastic.  I'm opening up one engine 'door', not really because I want to show an engine (more work!) but because that will be the only way to get the radiator intake, on the underside of the fuselage, to look all right: it needs to be patched up from the inside, and re-modelled a little.  Another job for the near future is re-modelling the 'bumps' on the top of the fuselage, just before the canopy, as Airfix got them really wrong...

You know, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give that a shot. The office is a "tub" so I know the seat won't go rattling off in the fuselage.

I'd tried and tried and tried to get the horizontal stabilizers lined up right, but they never looked right to me. It does show up more clearly in the pic. I think if I adjust the left one (looking aft) a bit that should do the trick.

By "adjust" I mean snap off and re-glue. LOL

Jon,

I think you must be a saint just to be building that kit...  I think you're right when you say it was easier back then.  Ny Airfix 109 has many problems that I want to solve but I'm sometimes asking myself if it is realy realistic to attempt to..! Yes, pity about the crooked seat.  Can't you snap it (just the seat) off and glue it back to a more normal position?   Is there a problem with the wings in relation to the tailplanes?  From your pics, it looks as if there is..

Well, I've slapped the P-47B together.

Having done so, I now see why Lindberg went out of business.

After a disaster with the resin pilot's office (notice how crooked it is- thanks to my poor super glue skills and lack of patience), I just figured I'd chalk it up to experience.

So I've glued the fuselage together, and I'm almost finished sanding.

Just figured I'd post some pics to show I was making progress. :-)

You know, I realize this kit was much easier when I was 8 and from box open to playing with it was about 2 hours. LOL

When the M-80 exploded, it blew the fuse in half and blasted ketchup everywhere.  We, and everything around us, was spackled with ketchup.

I wanted to puke, and he wanted to do it agian, but this time with a battleship.  That was when I think I told him I had to go home for dinner and that he could'nt come.  I also had to wear my "blood" stained clothing into the house and face a possible inquiry into my appearance.

Yes, that office looks good!  Well done!

I've ordered the Revell 109 G-10 because I really need a decent propeller to replace the skinny thingy that Airfix gave me...   Felt bad, kind of cheating in a way, but I guess adding PE or resin bits would be kind of similar in a way, and way more expensive.  After all, we are re-building a very early kit of ours WITH the experience we've acquired since our debut..

JWB, nice work with the cockpit. My mustang dosent really have one to speak of, aside from the pilots seat and the control yoke.

I got the fuselage glued together last night, and the pilots seat installed. I was pleasantly suprised with the fit of the fuselage halves. No filling required, just a bit of flash removal. Ill try and get a pic up tonight.

Thanks!

I left out the throttle levers- just couldn't get them on there. The IP panel looked OK, but it's hidden.

And after all the dry fitting and testing and so forth- the office is now sitting at a slight angle in the fuselage. LOL Oh well.

Makes me have even greater respect fo rhte folks I see who do such amazing resin/PE work that I see on these forums. That stuff ain't easy.

Well, I finished (sorta) the resin pilot's office for my P-47.

I guess "finish" is less correct than "stopped building and called it done as it would get".

It was my first resin set (resin and P/E) and I guess I should've thought more about getting something in 1/72 scale to cut my teeth on. I literraly couldn't figure out how to even get some of the tiny parts glued where they needed to go. I ended up with parts glued to tweezers, my fingers, all over the place. 5 of the parts were probably no larger than 1/32 of an inch in any direction, and I could hardly see them (with specs even) let alone handle them.

So I decided "when it ain't fun, move on to what is." So I finished the painting and glueing in what I could, and it's now nestled in the fuselage, probably to never be seen again once the canopy is in place.

I think next time when I spend money on resin, I'll make it 1/48 or better. :-)

Hey djmodels1999-

I share your feelings. The Lindberg kit I'm building has (had) a seat- no pilot.

'Course, I went insane and bought a resin cockpit for it with more parts than the kit itself. And most of the PE parts are smaller than i can see.

Now I'm thinking..... "Hmmmmm..... it has no engine either..."

LOL

Well there you go:  the magnificent Airfix Messerschmitt Bf-109 G-6 in all its (early) glory..

Look at that nasty locator pin inside the windscreen...  I did not remember that one!!  And look at the beautifuly furnished inside of the fuselage.  Airfix provides a 'seat' and a 'pilot'.  That's it!

Fun, fun, fun...

At last, I got my kit.  I'll post a pic later.  I was kind of surprised, to be honest.  It's not Hasegawa, for sure, but I did remember those Airfix rivets being bigger...  The plastic is not sky blue anymore, but light grey.  The cockpit details are basic to say the least, but I have some references to help along.  The kit comes with two rather boring colour schemes, and I've found another that is way more entertaining.  The kit decals are really poor, off centered (if you can say that for crosses!), and there's no svastika of course.  The spare decal box should come in handy!

I'm 37 and have been modelling for around 30 years now.

I have struck a snag in my build, I opened the AIRFIX kit up to discover that the clear sprue is missing. I have sent an email to AIRFIX so hopefully I should receive one in the near future.

JWB. I love the badge. I have a wooden Strombecker DC-3 hanging up. I found it at a train show if I remember correctly. When I investigated it, it looks like the kit was from the 50's. It was painted silver at one point but now it has a lovely OD green patena to it.

It's actually part of an ad for a StromBecKer B-24J from an ad in a November 1945 women's magazine. You can see it if you scroll almost to the bottom of this page here. In fact, that page probably has a dozen images that scream "badge". I just thought that one was cool because of the kid with the airplane, the shape (square, basically) and just kind of struck a chord with me.

I think there is a total of 12 parts in my Testor's  kit.  Quite a difference compared to the 1/700 Trumpeter Lexington that has over 300.

Frogfoot, my history class was canceled for today...

So...I got to work on my P-51 for a bit. It is progressing nicely. I am painting/ finishing all the small parts, Landing gear, pilot, cockpit, etc). There are only 28 parts in the kit, so it isnt too tough.

This is a great idea for a Group Build, the P51B is the kit I remember as my first, somehwere around '75.  Have one as well...but I can't enter, I gave that kit to my 7 year old son.  He has put together about 90% of it on his own and entered into the Allied Aces GB with it.

I will certainly drop in from time to time here...by the way, Jon..I had the same T'bolt and tried to paint a checkerboard on the front.  Like the one in the Time_Life book "Air War Over Europe"...WOW was that a pig's breakfast!

I started my P-47 last night. I ordered a resin interior for it. It won't be visible once I close it up, but it'll add fun to the build.

I'm also looking for display boxes to set everything up in for the final display.

I just started using PE about a year ago.  The stuff is habit forming to the point that while decorating Easter eggs, I was tempted to put brass railings on them.  On this model,  I just cannot stand those plain, bare walls on the superstructure without putting weld seams, portholes, and steam pipes on them.  And it has to have rails, and PE radars.  What can I say, I'm addicted.

As far as sails, I still have a bunch of old Life-Like sailing ship kits that Mom bought for me at Woolworths about 35 years ago. $0.50 a piece.  When I'm done with this kit, I may have to pull one of those out and put it together.  However, I just started learning how to make my own PE, so of coarse it will have PE ratlines and other little details.

One of these:

Here is the original Hawk hit:
www.home.earthlink.net/~billkaja/kitlist/hawk327.jpg

And here is the recent kit by Testors, which I paid $0.99 for from a  Squadron flyer sale last fall.

The Testor's box art is real hokey, but it is still the same old Hawk kit that I remember and is quite accurate.  It still has "Hawk" molded inside the hull and is molded in the original translucent colored plastic.

That Britton Norman Islander looks like an interestng build.

I opened the box on my little Coast Guard Cutter last night and one thing came to my mind.  That this little model will really stand out with some PE railings, doors, portholes, and radars.

One Airfix Messerschmitt Bf-109G on its way to me!  As well as a Azur Potez 63-11, a Airfix Britten Normn Islander and a Italeri Fiat Cr.42...  The Britten Norman Islander is a welcome re-issue: I have sweet souvenirs of a couple of those birds built in my early days...

I attempted to start work on my Mustang last night, only to find I couldnt see it! I trimmed the larger pieces out of the sprues and went to clean them up when I realized I could not see the dark 1/72 plastic, lol. Looks like I need a lamp for my work bench, and maybe some new glasses.

Ill try to work on it in the daylight now.

"Man, now I'm feeling dated.  All these stores are gone now, including K-mart.  All replaced by the 200,000,000 sq ft Wallymart that carries at the most three Revell F-106s and a Wright Flyer.  And these are over $11.  Or for $39.99, I could get a pre-built, pre-painted 1/48 P-47.  YUK! "

I know how you feel, Scott...  I was thinking the very same today as I went to the most local 'model' shop, i.e. Toys'r'Us, and found on the shelves a selection of at least 5 different models, all with their own little pots of glue and paint, and brushes, and a number of pre-painted, pre built bikes.   This Airfix 109, I'll probably have to order it from Hannants, online...  There was a time when you could not get into a shop, any shop, without seeing some form of Airfix kits....

And thinking of the town where I grew up, all those little stores where I was able to buy my first (hundred or so) kits are all gone too.

The pricetag badge sounds like fun to me.

So, what stores (drug and department) as a kid do you remember going to and ogling over their selection of cheap models?  And it seemed they all carried models.

For me, it was.....

Skaggs Drug
Bonanza 88 cents store
Woolworths
The Bon
ValueMart
Osco Drug
K-Mart
Gills Drug
Ben Franklin
Scheels True Value
The Downtowner Dept Store
Public Drug

Woolworths, Bonanza, The Downtowner, Public Drug, and the Bon were all on the same block downtown.  My mom worked at an ad agency in the same building and after school I would go and hang out in these stores while waiting for her to get off work.  Usually she would have to come and get me and we would end up going home with some $0.88 model.

We also had a big hobbyshop downtown where I would spend hours making our my Christmas list since they carried the  premium stuff that was out of my allowance budget.

Mom was a comparison grocery shopper, and the days before superstores, all the neighborhood grocery stores had a drugstore next to them.  While she went in to get the groceries, I would go over to the drug store and end up with some sort of wingy or floating thingy.  While she compared the price of Tuna between two stores, I was comparing the price of a Airfix Avenger or trying to decide if I wanted the MPC 1/72 Dauntless at Skaggs or the 1/48 Spowith Camel by Monogram which was hiding behind a stack of BF-109s and Spitfires over at Bonanza..

Those were also the days when a 10 yr old could roam freely without the worry of ending up having his picture on the side of a milk carton.

Man, now I'm feeling dated. YUK!

Sounds good, this 79c badge idea!  Those were indeed the good old times!  The Airfix kits that came in blisters and some still in plastic bags cost 20 Belgian francs at the time (mid to late 70s).  That's 1/2 of a Euro or a US dollar nowadays.  The Humbrol tins of paint also used to cost 20 Belgian francs...

The shop I got my kits from was a toy/model shop in the town I was born, and they had a pretty good selection of Airfix and Revell kits at first, then also Matchbox.  I'd go there on Friday latee afternoon with my dad, while we waited for my mum to have finished her job at the nearby supermarket.  It was a great thing, that weekly visit with my dad, stocking up for the week end...

Yeah- my grandma would give me $5 when she came to visit, drive me over to K-Mart, and I could easily get 2 or 3 kits, paint, and still have money left over for candy and pocket change.

I recall visiting the BX at Moody AFB with a neighbor's kid. They had models (in bags) for $.50! I was in heaven. I had like $10 with me- and spent it all. My dad couldn't believe I came home with that many models. I didn't care- I was too busy slabbing paint and squirting glue. LOL

I don't know why this comes to mind, but the image iIgot at thinking about that was picturing a country road, stone wall, a small farm cottage, and then a flight of WWII fighters passing over. Sorta think of a kid in Europe in 1944 watching a flight of Mustangs/Spitfires/109's taking off as he heads to the farm house up the road.

I know not everyone is building airplanes. :-)

And that's a lot of detail for a badge.

Wait, I got it. A fat guy asleep on a recliner at 7:30 in the evening. I can send you the picture..... ;-)

Brilliant!  Already lots of participants and lots of fun in the making, I see!  Thanks, David, for this thread and the forthcoming badge.  I've indeed checked availability of the Airfix 109 and I was surprised to see it's still in production...   I wonder how many younsters have given up scale modelling after buying that kit...  It's been around for at least 30 to 40 years!  Actually, I wonder how really bad it is.  Does anyone know??? My first and only experience with this kit, so far, had little to do with 'fine scale modelling'...   I'll get one from the local Toys'r'Us tomorrow, I guess!

That P-51 does bring back memories.  Built that one and the B-25, and the F4F.  All bought at the drugstore adjacent to the grocery store.  Every Friday my parents would get groceries and I would go next door and hang out in the model section which was stocked with all those old Monogram kits.

TAdan looks like that P-51 should not take you to long to build.

As for me here is a pic of my kit

Here is my before shot. Not all the parts are pictured, but you get the idea. Off to the right I included thee horizontal stabilizers from my first kit, and the display stand base. I know the rest of the plane is around somewhere, I saw it recently, just cant find it now, lol.

Yeah, I was just looking through one of my reference books, and found a similar pic- in color! So now I know what the colors really looked like.

Ok, I have decided finaly! I will go with the 1/72 Airfix Firefly with minimal extras except almost 30yrs of modeling to make sure I don't use as much glue this time.Smile [:)]

Count me in. I'm building a Lindberg P-47, that I'd first mentioned in this thread. I orginally built it in 1975 or so, and this was my first kit.

I've got two vintage kits of the bird- one still in the original sealed box, the other opened up but complete. I'll actually building a re-issue of the kit, courtesy of Rob Gronovius (many, many thanks Rob!). So I've got 3 identical kits for this GB!

I'm not sure exactly what I'll end up doing for the final presentation, but I'm working on ideas so the final "product" will be the built re-issue version worked into a display of the one kit in the sealed box, with the instructions, decals and parts on the sprue from the opened kit.

Here is the still sealed kit. This is the 1974 version, and is the one I actually built as a kid.

This is the kit that is open, which is actually an older version, from 1967. All parts are there, as are the instructions and decals. They appear to be exactly like the '74 version I built, so I'll use them to show parts on the sprue.

Finally, here is the re-issue Rob so kindly provided for me.

The only difference I can see is that the reissue is cast in dark green, and the pilot has been left out- it's not on the instructions. Ironically, the stub on the sprue is still there- part #24! But you can see it was not cast, only the stub. Wonder if they used the original molds?

Believe it or not- here's a photo of the real bird. Tail number is the same, though the # on the fuselage is different on the kit. How about that? That's the REAL Captain Thunderbolt. (Which makes more sense if you read my previously referenced post....) [;-)]

Rob, I like your thinking with the details.

I had planned to build mine OOTB, but I know I have some parts left over from a Hasegawa P-51B I built. I think Ill try and add them to the R/M kit and spruce it up a bit.

I think I may build the old Revell 1/40th (the box listed scale) M4 Sherman. A real conglomeration of Sherman variants: an M4A1 hybrid hull, horizontal volute suspension system, early 75mm turret with a 76mm gun. Real strange version of a tank that probably never existed.

I believe the actual scale of this kit measures out to 1/36.

Since there are no rules, I may replace some of the undetailed or omitted parts with some parts that are more detailed.

I remember my parents bringing home a bunch of old Hawk ship kits  from Woolworths.  Testors is now making them and I picked up the old Coast Guard Cutter.  So count me in on that one.
