Battle of Midway June 4th 2006 - June 7th 2007
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 12:36 PM

I would like to start a “Battle of Midway” group build I would like to start it on the date it happened June 4th ending date June 7th of 2007 that gives a year to get things rolling. What I would like to see is all aspects of the time ie. Ships, planes and so on.

Any scale

Please email me klum_sy@valornet.com if you are interested, I’m new at this so bare with me I want to compile a database with builds and info that all may have. We all know about torpedo 8 squadron but what about torpedo 6 off the Hornet? Dig deep, have fun and lets learn some history. Again I’m new at this so this maybe the wrong way about going, but I gotta try. Depending on the response I will try and come up with a cool GB sig.

Please feel free to elaborate and input, I am open to all suggestions.

Thanks guys,

Scott

This might get the fires cooking...

Battle of Midway, 4-7 June 1942 --

The Battle of Midway, fought over and near the tiny U.S. mid-Pacific base at Midway atoll, represents the strategic high water mark of Japan's Pacific Ocean war. Prior to this action, Japan possessed general naval superiority over the United States and could usually choose where and when to attack. After Midway, the two opposing fleets were essentially equals, and the United States soon took the offensive.

Japanese Combined Fleet commander Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto moved on Midway in an effort to draw out and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet's aircraft carrier striking forces, which had embarassed the Japanese Navy in the mid-April Doolittle Raid on Japan's home islands and at the Battle of Coral Sea in early May. He planned to quickly knock down Midway's defenses, follow up with an invasion of the atoll's two small islands and establish a Japanese air base there. He expected the U.S. carriers to come out and fight, but to arrive too late to save Midway and in insufficient strength to avoid defeat by his own well-tested carrier air power.

Yamamoto's intended surprise was thwarted by superior American communications intelligence, which deduced his scheme well before battle was joined. This allowed Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the U.S. Pacific Fleet commander, to establish an ambush by having his carriers ready and waiting for the Japanese. On 4 June 1942, in the second of the Pacific War's great carrier battles, the trap was sprung. The perserverance, sacrifice and skill of U.S. Navy aviators, plus a great deal of good luck on the American side, cost Japan four irreplaceable fleet carriers, while only one of the three U.S. carriers present was lost. The base at Midway, though damaged by Japanese air attack, remained operational and later became a vital component in the American trans-Pacific offensive

Scroll back a couple of pages & you'll find a Midway GB is already going on.  Just not very active.

Rick - that would be mine from last year. Disapprove [V]  I don't think anyone has posted there in awhile, I was actually thinking about starting to advertise for round two, until Scott stepped up to the plate!

Scott - actually it might help you to look for that old Battle of Midway GB, being it is on the same subject, you can see how it was structured... and also, some of how it works once you read a page or two in.  I'm ready for June so lead on!

Here's the link to the previous years GB for reference's sake.

http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/379282/ShowPost.aspx

-edit-

i just saw your previous post with the question about how to start this... counting yourself we now have 6 or 7 people interested in doing it... I figure that's enough to start with!!  You might want to edit the first post in this build and take out the question mark, after "The Battle of Midway" put in June 4.2006 - June 7, 2007... they'll be dropping in like flies!!  (just in case you don't know how to, go to the top of the page, on that message you posted click on the "Edit" button at the top right of it.  Change the title and click on post and you've now got yourself an official GB!!!

I still have last years 90% complete Buffalo from last year if I can find references i might try to do a Midway based B-17  or a F1M2 "Pete" floatplane as it was a "Pete" from the cruiser Tone that found the american fleet at Midway

Count me in. Need to do a little research on what I'll build, but I've always liked reading about Midway. Maybe I can find some obscure build to tie into it- that's always fun.

Don't know if you've got any badge ideas yet. This photograph is pretty famous, showing SBD's over the Japanese cruiser Makuma on 6 June '42. Might make a nice badge.

Jon I remember that pic it was after the Japanese cruisers Mikuma and Mogami collided during the withdrawal from Midway the US Navy and the Marines on Midway jumped the two ships the next day sinking the Mikuma and plastering the Mogami so badly that it spent the better part of 2 years in refitPirate [oX)]

Has anyone done the Monogram 1/48 B-26 kit?  Is it as bad as the 1/72 offering???  just curious because today I bought the AccMin US WWII Armament set, and kept ending up staring at that Mk13 torpedo and wondering if now was the time to build that bomber I have been wanting to do...

thanks Chris!  yeah it's Revell DE I was thinking about... I bought the 1/72 offering but there were gaps around the engine nacelles I was tempted to use expanding foam to fill, and I would looking into wood strips to fill the ones in the body... Wink [;)]  I didn't want to go through that in 1/48 scale... I would go bankrupt buying filler material!

I'm up for round two. This time I'll do a Monogram 48 Devastator to go with the Dauntless I did for the last one. I should be able to get a build done in a year, and the extra 4 days are just a bonus. Th june start date should be perfect for me too. The Devastator I do will have to be from VT-8.

still undecided what to build... I really should try to round this out with a Japanese plane but another SBd would be up my alley!!

Put me down for a F4F Wildcat. The particular kit and unit markings to be determined after a bit of research.

Dave - the tamiya F4F-4 builds up like a dream!  I don't think you could go wrong with that kit!!!  An Ultracast seat and maybe an interior PE set would really dress it up... at the least the seat though... the molded in seat belts look SO much better than PE in my opinion...

If you decided to try the ultracast seat the "Early War" model would be correct for this build...

Dave - I'd be interested in seeing a pic of that engine when you have it done... compared to the P-47 Tamiya makes, the engine on the Wildcat is very sparse.. I have built about 4 so far and I am sure I will do another as I like doing them as F4F's and FAA Martlets (Royal Navy) so there's a lot of variations...

Take your time, a magnifier and a small brush for the belts and once you're done that seat will look better than you can imagine... not to mention that the ONLY thing you can see once you close the fuselage *IS* the seat... so it makes it really worthwhile for the price. (and since you get two, there's another reason to buy another kit haha)
