Hey Frank, I am looking to start casting a few tings myself real son.  What I am going to do is use a resin starter kit from Micro Mark.  I don't know if you are interested, but here is a link to the kit:

Thanks for that link Brian!  Have you looked at the site to see if replacement items for the set are available separately, for when you run out of something?  That sounds like a great starter set, anybody ever tried using that one?

Yes Frank, they sell the individual supplies seperate to replace what is needed as well.  As a matter of fact I read a tutorial in the FSM special issue that used the same resin, release and mold rubber (IIRC).  One thing to note (according to the article) when you crack the bottle open there is a limited shelf life to the un-used portion, so it is suggested you collect a number of things you want molded and do a big batch of things right away.  I have a bunch of things all lined up for when I get around to casting (a lot of 1/35 armor stuff like boxes, ALICE packs, Mauser rifles, and I just picked up two carrier kits, a USS Essex and IJN Junyo in which I want to cast more of the aircraft since 20 planes each is just silly Big Smile [:D] )

Hey guys.

Quick question on my Sea Hawk. Does anybody know what the series of vents on the top of the aircraft (behind the cockpit) are? They are right above the engine compartment and I've seen them open in flight right here:

But often closed... like here:

So whats the deal? If I wanted to make an aircraft pre or post mission, sitting on the flight deck with its pilot out of the seat, would it be closed?

Second, I need a bit of a tip. I'd like to build a somewaht more "busy" landing gear bay like in this photo:

However I don't have anything thin enough to make the wires and tubing as seen. What do you guys use? I guess I could do the usual melt and pull method using of old sprues, but I find its hit and miss as well as time consuming. Any suggestions?

Sure thing! Look for junk wires. Especially shielded types as with headphones or electronics.  An old broke usb cable or joystick. Any old theing really. Old broke headphones or a busted VCR. Strip the wires and the insulating metal shield usually makes an extremely fine wire for such things. If none is handy check with friends as people usually don't mind giving up garbage.

For those vents, I don't know this for certain but most jets have supplemental air inlets which are open during run-ups and takeoffs.  Once the jet is at speed, they often close as the air coming in is enough for the engine.  They are usually shut when the jet is parked to keep FOD to a minimum.  Perhaps someone who knows more about that aircraft can help?

Aaorn is right about the fine wire, that is where I get mine. Thumbs Up [tup]

The doors are probably blow in doors to get more air to the engine at low airspeed, often seen on 50's jets, and the MiG 29 too.  Spring loaded, closed on the ground.

Wait a sec did Frank say I was right about something? Shock [:O] Lets keep that between us!

Well got the wings and just about all the major asseblies together and began painter the 1/48 Hasegawa Sea Hurricane all up. One of Frank's favorite schemes of the Dark sea Gray and Dark Slate Gray over Sky. Make a Toast [#toast]

So Far just have the Sky and Dark Sea gray on but it is progress! Thumbs Up [tup] Getting a good finish with the paint to boot! Over the Tamiya Primer.

Getting my $$$'s worth outta the MkIII point 7 paint stand. Pat Pending by the XO. Best $627.37 I ever spent Frank. Thumbs Up [tup]

Only spot I have to touch up is the right wing as the plastic is slightly scratched where I had to remove some of the raised details off the wing that didn't belong. I use one of those fancy nail polishing files with the 4 surfaces that feel almost smooth as the grit is so fine but it does a bang up job on such repairs.

Well have to nap for work again. Some time I may get time off. Hopefully timed when the PE and stuff arrive for the stringbags! No mail on Sunday booo! Boohoo [BH]

So glad to hear you are enjoying your new paint stand!  Remember kids, these are on sale right now so the $627.37 price will not last long! Mischief [:-,]

You make it look easy Aaron, well done!  That Hurri is coming along beautifully. Approve [^]

Aaron looking really good.

I recently purchased the XOs slightly smaller paint stand for $599.00. It is a small styrafoam brick. I had to pay extra ($28.37) for the high speed low drag modeling sticks.

As soon as i get a chance to use it I will post pics.

I'd agree. One interesting thing you can see from the cutaway here:

http://www.flightglobal.com/airspace/photos/militaryaviation1946-2006cutaways/images/11504/hawker-seahawk-cutaway.jpg

is that the intake for the engine (Nene) which is a centrifugal compressor type, is only slightly behind those two inlets at the wing roots, although centered in the fuse, so the air does a "90" inboard to the engine. Might be hard to breath standing still. Another unusual feature are the twin jet pipes for one engine.

Yeah I noticed they have alot of great stuff on the site. The photo on this page shows it better:
http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1950/1950%20-%200288.html

To be honest, its the part I dread the most; its going to be a hell of a scratchbuild to fit the intakes into that space.

Anyway thanks to sfmac and everybody else for their advice... I had some time to work on it over the weekend, and as you see, I've gone a little bit overboard. Its partly because I had too much fun adding in all the internals.

This is a early test fit of the airframe.

Again, thanks for all the help... I'm having a great time with this. By the way, does anybody know of a 1/72 Sea Venom FAW22 model? I'd like to have the three planes used in Suez side by side, but I can't find anything except the dreadfully reviewed Toko/frog kit.

Ok, I know I promised these a while ago, but you know how it goes.  Ya sit there in front of your computer and remind yourself "oh yeah, need to take pics the next time I am at the bench."  Then when you get around to the bench you go "what was it I was supposed to remember?"  Right?  Please tell me I am not the only one with a horrible memory! Big Smile [:D]

I have a couple more pieces of Photo Etch to add, but will wait until the last minute before painting because they are some of the smallest and most fragile of the exterior pieces.  Besides that it is just maskign the canopy and the ordenance left before the big paint job!

Neu,

Two words for the intakes FOD Covers.Laugh [(-D]  If you plan on sticking with divine scale the Toko/Frog kit is it, it seems.Sigh [sigh]

Mike,

Nice work on the Hellcat.  Here's hoping everything goes right when you attach the wings.Make a Toast [#toast]

Mac,

You sure you go to work?  The way you're knocking them out leads me to believe otherwise.  Got some of the pics back I took at Lone Star Flight Musuem last year and the Hurricane pics (the plane, not Ike) got me wondering if ya'll would like to see them.  Not much FAA stuff, but a lot of USN stuff.  Won't mention the partially naked F4U-5N, Frank wouldn't want to see them anyway.

-Neu- Your Seahawk is coming along very well, keep those pics coming.

Mike- That Hellcat looks so smoooooth, well done!  Can't wait to see her done up. Approve [^]

Brian- Love that Harrier, sure looks like it means business.  What was it you were saying about memory loss?  I forgot already. Sigh [sigh]

Man o Man.... I take a quick nap and there are post of 3 crazy terriffic looking builds posted. Neu that looks like some great work. Really adds to the look doesn't it?

Mike that  paint scheme on that Hellcat is looking great! Haen't seen that done before but it looks freaky fine!

Brian  that Harrier and all the itty bitty PE!  Really makes me cringe cuz I know what you went through to get it to look that good.

Kudos to the three of you!Make a Toast [#toast]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Pirate [oX)]

Ritchie I got the PE today and it is perfect! Just what I needed. I'll wrap up the hurricane and catch that Revell kit right up!  You are right it will make the diff between night and day with that kit!  You da man! Bow [bow]Bow [bow] The parts aren't quite as scary as I had expected so I think I can use about 95 %  of what you sent!

Still waiting on the 1/48 Tamiya stuff though. Tracking # sez Weds delivery.

Seaking of that divine scale stuff. Lewbud!  I do actually work. Really too much and my back is paying the price today. Had a breakdown last night that caused a sudden and violent stop that tossed me hard enough to break the seat and split the soul of my steel toe in half.  Not bouncing back from it as fast as I'd like to so I took the night off. Aaron,

Sorry to hear about that.  Hope you get to feeling better soon.  To help the Nurse would like to see you ASAP!

To aid in your recovery or just ward off general boredom, here's some pics of the Hurricane at Lone Star in Galveston.  Hope they got her out before Ike hit because she was in no condition to fly at the time.

Oops!  How'd that last one get in there?  Them bent wing birds are sneaky!
