JGSDF Vehicles in So.Cal.
Posted by stikpusher on Monday, August 18, 2008 3:52 PM

Sunday afternoon while driving the freeway through Long Beach I spied a most suprising and unusual sight- several "low boy" trucks carrying JGSDF deuce and1/2 type trucks. I looked and saw righthand drive, Japanese bumper markings, and camo schemes. Unfortunately since I was driving solo, I could not safely drive and get pics of them. Now I am wondering why they were here and where they were going.

If they were going to NTC, they were way off the logical routes. And they did not look like they were coming out of NTC beacuse they did not have that post NTC look vehicles get, even after they are washed down.

I'll go with Rob on them going to or coming from the NTC.  The Port of Long Beach is where we sent vehicles for sea movement.  Likewise, the vehicles have to be spotless before they can be put on the boats too.  They are pressure cleaned at the NTC before they move down to the port.  We would get a wide range of international units out there training as well.

That's strange.  I know the JGSDF's mission is to protect the homeland.  After living in Japan for a year, I can say without a doubt, there are no deserts in Japan.  Maybe they made a wrong turn at Albuquerque...

Hi Jesse,

At one time, the JGSDF did have a deployment to Iraq, tasked with humanitarian/reconstruction duties. It was the first foreign deployment of Japanese forces since WW2.

Japan had a Humanitarian/Civil Affairs and Medical contingent in Iraq a couple years ago. Maybe they plan on sending troops back as part of the coalition.

They had a contingent in Iraq which is why I made the statement. Perhaps they have plans to return to assist once again.

I guess you guys missed my ironic point.  The Japanese Ground "SELF DEFENSE" Force is training in areas that don't need self defending.  That's all.  I wasn't refuting their training at NTC and I know they were deployed in Iraq.  I was just trying to be funny.

Shortly before OIF kicked off in 2003, I was in Japan for a Yama Sakura Exercise. Basicly a computer wargame defense of Japan from attack and invasion. We interacted for the whole time extensively with our Japanese counterparts. Many of them told me that they had been to Yakima Training Area in WA state for different live fire exercises of their weapon systems. Many Americans would be suprised at how many foreign troops come to visit and train every year.

Much of the Luftwaffe's pilot training program is at Sheppard AFB in Texas (among other US installations): http://www.country-data.com/cgi-bin/query/r-5003.html

That's true. In my six years, I trained many times with foreign units. French, Brits, Germans, Belgians, Canadians, Thai, Koreans, you name it. I even remember a contingent from Botswana at Airborne School.
