Joe, beautiful Stryker. One of the best I have seen so far. I don't come around Finescale much but I came upon this by chance and had to comment. I happen to be doing 3 at the moment and thought about the same solution as you for keeping things square. I think this is the best way to handle those flimsy slat fence sections. I like your box organization idea.

A couple of comments for those contemplating building a slat Stryker.

Joe mentioned the light extensions. He could have left those off, but would have to have built a first deployment Stryker (3/2 bde) or 2nd deployment (1/25). As well, those early Strykers did not have the exhaust deflector either. These same Strykers did not have the roof blast shields, instead using sandbags as protection. Many crews supplemented the sandbags w/ Kevlar blankets rolled up and used as protection around the roof area too.

Still, the light/exhaust extension combo is not 100% consistent rule since there was a transitioning period when 1/25 deployed. There are photos showing the exhaust deflector but the lights are still in there low position. The color of the exhaust deflector is a gunmetal and not CARC green. My guess is they feel it is pointless to paint this part since the paint would get cooked off anyway. Since about 2006 or so the exhaust deflector is part of the basic Stryker whether it has slat attached or not. Believe me, riding in the TC hatch is no fun w/o the deflector attached.

Finally, I wish AFV Club and/or Trumpeter would include the needed spent shell catch bag for the rear of the RWS. AFV Club updated their CV kit w/ needed fixes, so I hope they do it w/ future variants. Real Model provides one in one or more of their Stryker update kits, but this is a basic part that really should be included. There is a small catch bag for the front of the RWS but not all crews use this. Both are a real pain to make on your own.

There are more interesting tidbits, but these are the basics.

Both of you came in on the high end. Amazingly, this beasty weighed in at 8 ounces or half a pound (whichever came first.) I was kinda surprised by that myself with all that metal and resin.

I'm glad you guys got a kick out of this build. I certainly enjoyed it, but I have to admit that I'm going through some PE withdrawal right about now.

Nice job...I would think you might be approaching 3+ lbs with the resin stuff on there now.

Love the sign in the back. The light weathering lets the details show. Very nice finish to a complicated build. Thumbs Up [tup]

I look forward to another adventure with you in "as the armor turns" Shock [:O]....I'll tune in.

Just look me up here in "the armor (twilight) zone".Wink [;)]

This is the touching, tender final episode of As the Stryker Turns...Johnny and Emma forsake Amishness for Scientology, Uncle Larry returns from prison as Aunt Loretta, and this whole silly story grinds to an inevitable halt. With that, I give you the AFV Club M-1126 Stryker ICV with Eduard's Big Ed photoetched slat armor.

I found the sign in one of the Concord books amd photoshopped my own. The Arabic is copied off the original sign, so I'm pretty sure it doesnt say anything naughty.

Okay, gang, anybody wanna guess what this thing weighs? (hint...its less than a duck)

Thanks for looking!

Joe

You too, eh?

She called it a scribe. It turns out that the tool was pretty much handmade in one of her shop classes, which is why it was a fairly big deal for me to use it. Its like the Holy Hand Tool of Antioch. I made a special perch for it on my tool rack. It briefly disappeared into the entropy of my workbench, causing much consternation, but it was found and she was none the wiser.

Hidey ho, Stryker fans, its time for another episode of "As the Stryker Turns (and Returns Fire)"...in tonight's exciting episode, Johnny and Emma question their Amish ways, Uncle Larry meets a new friend in prison, and the Stryker takes on its slats.

Actually, where I left off was at my discovery of yet more additional PE parts for my AFV Club Stryker.

These two frets are Eduard's Blast Panels, which also include the correct headlight mounts.

Since the additional blast panels block some of the strap tiedowns, I had to rearrange the gear on the top deck.

Here is a view of the assembled blast panels, attached to a piece of adhesive floor tile prior to painting.

I followed redleg's lead and got myself some camouflage decals. This sheet is put out by CrossDelta, which is the only kind of camo decal currently carried by Sprue Brothers (where all the PE came from). They make a Woodland and a 6-color desert Chocolate Chip sheet.

The sheet is about 5x7" and has three shades of color to represent various degrees of wear. They also come with nametag names between the three shades, with names of the presidents from the 1800s.

I used the decals on two of the ALICE packs and a duffle bag that came with the Legend Stryker Stowage set. I only actually used the duffle bag (not seen here), as I didnt want to load the vehicle up with every pack, duffle, tarp and ammo box known to mankind. I'll save these two for the next Stryker I build (which won't have slats, trust me.)

I didnt use all the PE parts that came in the sets, either. The grenade launchers looked fine in plastic and I really wasnt in the mood to roll 16 separate barrels out of PE. The same goes for the ammo box (although I did use the cover.)

One of my reference photos shows a slatted Stryker with a horn on the left side of the hull. I turned one out of scrap plastic on my Dremel tool, but I still havent decided if I'm going to use it or not.

I got some shiny sparkly plastic thingies from the local Walmart craft section, found the ones that had a nice magenta color, cut them into little strips and glued them to the periscopes.

 Yet more periscopes...

Here are the correct headlight assembly mounts, and the covers for the spots where the headlights would normally be.

And yes, I finally got around to actually attaching the slats to the vehicle...a very tedious and nervewracking task that nearly drove me nuts (and believe me, its a short trip anyway.)

Some hours later, after much screaming, hairpulling and jumping about, the slats were secure.

Final touches have yet to be added. My next post will show the finished project. Until then, I am...

Thanks to everybody for all the nice comments.

As for using self-stick tile to hold parts down, be careful how you stick your parts (words of wisdom on many levels). The stuff is very adhesive and if you aren't careful, you might not be able to remove the part. This especially goes for any PE parts. Trust me.

I love that idea of using the self-stick floor tile to hold the wheels for painiting. That's a keeper!

Your WIP looks great. I have the Voyager slat armor kit in my stash, but I need to get a few simpler PE projects under my belt before I tackle it. Thanks for the inspiring build.

Looks like all that thought and planning and jigs and gadgets came together and worked great!! Can't wait to see this thing all finished, are you going to put it on a little dusty base? You've already taken up the ground color very well Thumbs Up [tup]

These Stryker's become quite the painting puzzle with the slat armor and such.  You seem to have it well in hand.

take care,

Very nice. Love the little straps....they do tend to be everywhere. Looking forward to seeing the final weathering. How are you going to dust the slats???

Bill - I use them all the time. The back part is open to crimp over a wire. The helping hands alligator clip grab them just fine. Great for holding those tiny parts without the damaging alligator teeth!!
