Help with a Howitzer
Posted by okieboy on Thursday, December 18, 2003 11:34 AM
Hello folks,

A friend of mine is a former artillery officer in the Army and he is looking for a good model of a 155 mm Self propelled howitzer, preferably in 1/32 scale, if it exists. Thank you very much for your help.

I haven't seen any 1/32 scale guns, but I know there are the M-109 series in 1/35 scale from various companies.

Italeri and revell make a few kits of the 109 series and some others as well. You can find aftermarket kits for extra details for these all over the place, I found a lot at

http://www.squadron.com you can use the search for a M109 and it should turn up a lot of cool goddies for ya.
there are many more paces to search this is just but one.

Redleg is correct. Make sure to ask your friend exactly what variant of 155mm SP he was on. The M109 looks a lot different than the M109A3 and that looks a lot different than the M109A6. If he's a pre-1960's vet, then he would most likely have been on something other than the M109's.

Steel on Target, Redleg. Nice shooting.

yep the M108 or maybe the M109E4 , he could've even served in a M 110 A2 battery during the first Gulf war. ( I'm assuming from gulf war to present? )

I did find a 1/32 scale paladin from some toy company , something like those pre painted weathered action fighting toy things? I can't remember the manufacture though.

Thank you very much gents. My friend is of the Gulf War vintage, as I am. I'll be sure to pass this on. (I told him that the folks in this forum knew their stuff!) You guys are the greatest.

The M108 is a 105mm SP howitzer, not a 155mm howitzer. Also the M110A2 is 8" not 155mm. While the M110A2 saw service in the Gulf, the M108 didn't live long past Vietnam.

If he was in an SP 155mm unit he would have had to have been on an M109A4 or M109A5. Italeri makes this kit, Revell reboxes the Paladin (M109A6) and an M109A2GA2 that includes German specific fittings.

You best bet is to look for Italeri kit #246 M109E4/G/A1-A2/E4, with it you can build any US variant short of the Paladin without any problems. It last appears in my 2001 and 2002 Squadron catalog but is missing from the 2003 catalog. I bet your local hobby shop may have one in stock. I think mine does.

I just picked up a M109E4/G/A1/A2 today, I think this one is going to be an all out aftermarket kit project?

Major, you have anyM109 E4 pics in your trackpark?

( I think I read somewhere that this kit was discontinued , but I'm not sure?)

I have to share this with you since it's Friday, I'm in a good mood and we're talking about guns. When I joined, my unit still had the M109; one of which had the rammer on the rear turret ring! At Sill, I trained on M109's, then got back to my unit and they had the NEW (wow!) M109A1's. That's what I gunned on for five years and really enjoyed. Then, I went into Armor, as well as having a twelve year break in service, and missed the A2- A5. When I came back 'in' I changed from an M60 Gunner to M1IP driver, then finished with M1's as a temporary platoon sergeant. After a year and a half as an infantryman, I went back into Paladins. Quite a change from M109A1's! But man, what a vehicle.

So, that's it. Have a great weekend all!

Ron.

I still miss my A5's, 4 years on them and now the Paladins.
I also would love to get in a 548 again, they were some fun especially the D rings, tee hee.

I have an M109A4 and an M109A5 in my motor pool. Squadron doesn't list the M109E4/G/A1-A2/E4 any more. Great Models may still have it in stock.
