Seeing the "gone baby gone" of Tenax thread got me thinking. My LHS sells to glues- Tamiya Extra Thin and Testors liquid. Ive used both, and this is what i have noticed. Please feel free to corect, add, tweak, share imput, whatever!
Price- TET(Tamiya extra Thin) costs five dollars and comes in a 40ML jar. TL (Testors Liquid) comes in a 29 ML jar and costs 3.50. Winner- TET, but id rather drop 3.50 evertime i go to the LHS than 5.00.
Brush- TET has a nice, fine brush that lowers the amount of collateral damage. TL comes with a huge, stiff brush. Winner- TET by a mile.
Odor-TET smells a lot like nailpolish remover, mainlly cause its made of acetate. It stinks pretty bad. TL has an entirely different odor, i actually kind of like it. It doesnt smell nearly as bad. Winner-TL
Thinness- Both are very thin out of the jar, and esaily carried by capilary action. I have noticed that TET seems to get thicker as you use it though, for obviouse reasons. I havent noticed this with TL
Setup time- TET sets up pretty fast. It sitll gives you time to move the part around, though. TL takes a bit of time to set up, however.
Evaporation- Both glues evaporate very quicky- but TL evaporates much faster
Strenght- Both glues cure to a very strong bond. I dont do strenght thests on my parts, but i beleive TL is stronger. What do you think?
Collateral Damage- Both glues dont really effect surronding plastic if you get a little bit of glue on them. Tamiyas brush makes it easier to apply the glue where you want it. I have had dissolved plastic where i didnt want it using TL, though. This was only becuase i had a semi-large puddle of it.
How did i compare the two? TL has that big, bushy brush, right? Wouldnt that effect my observations? Well, i took an old, thickened jar of TET and emptied it out (and disposed of it by dropping it off at the towns chemacal waste collection thing- gotta help the environment wherever practical) and poured the jar of TL in it. Viola- TL in the jar with the nice brush of TET!
SO lemme hear what you think. Im no expert, so feel free to comment on any of the points i mad, and feel free to add your own as well!
