Nothing should have been edited IMO.  As a former soldier adn I am sure other Vets will back me up on this.

Field Mods:

We as soldiers have it beaten into our heads to "ADAPT AND OVERCOME"  We will do what we need to do to "make it work"  no two mods will ever look the same....................period.

Ed your work is stunning and there is a lot of things a modeler of ANY caliber could learn from you.  I have to admit I am getting a little tired of some of the critiques some on this site give.  Some are great and some are arrogant to the point of really pi$$ing me off.

This mud roller has got this Soldiers back ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woah! Fellas...

Let the overlords that are judges at a national level IPMS contest decide how accurate the positioning of the Flak gun on the truck decide. Im sure even if it is installed backwards it would only be a minor deduction for inaccuracy. With all the field conversions the Germays made under harsh conditions perhapse a few were installed in this position?Hmm

I am the last person to pipe up on accuracy, spelling or historical data. I never research my replys in the forums, prefering to draw from memory of all the documentries I have seen over time. Many of which have inaccurate information which I have noticed as well.Oops

At a certain point I gave up research and rivet counting my builds. Prefering to 'get R done' and scratch built modifications if  they look cooler than the kit supplied details. Its all in the eye of the viewer, depending who and where it is viewed. If this finished conversion wins first place then the positioning wasn't a huge issue. If it doesn't place at all then obviously it was. If its for your den and viewing by friends and family I wouldn't loose sleep over it as i'm sure it will look fine to them.2 cents

I hate it when I have so much catching up to do.  But there are times it is well worth it.  This is one of those times.  Nice.

Thanks Karl,Wbill,Bob, Suppression Fire, Marc, Wayne and Rob for your time and comments.

Build Update:  Hey Rob you think you are antsy I am a week or more away from paint!  I just started scratch building the ammo box for the Sd.AH 51 today and I have quite a bit of detail work on it to go.  Here are progress shots so far.

I don't mean to be pushy Ed, Just that I really like the way you paint and the in depth how to that goes with it. Oh and I forgot about the scratch trailer, which is looking great by the way. From what you've built in the past year, your painting (and building) gets better with each model, the reason I can't wait to see this guy with some paint. I'm also curious as to how you'll do the chipping on it. I will of course wait patiently for the paint my friend.

When this one is done you should take a pic of all the North Africa vehicles together. I'd love to see those in person someday.

Rob I didn't take it that way at all.  I want to paint as well, but I can discuss my plan which is going to be leveraging your work on your Matilda.  I plan to use the HP method to show multiple layers of metal, primer, German Grey with Dark Yellow over spray with lots of chipping and erosion.  I should have at least three layers of HP so it wiil be fun.  I believe the interior of the vehicle will be mostly Grey with the I-Beams primed rusty steel.  I plan to have quite a bit of color shifts between the major components which are the weapon, vehicle and trailer.  I read your chipping on Scratchmod.com avidly well done M8!

I wish you could see them as well.  I plan to put all three in a Dio so it should be fun.  Masterbox just released a really cool figure set I would like to use.

Stick out tongue I like it and this is going to be a pleasure to watch, lots of color. Glad to hear my tech and site is of use to you Ed, if it helps atleast one person then I'm a happy camper. I've been working on stuff for the techniques page, different ways to paint raw metal and should have it posted on the weekend.

looking forward to the next up date as always. keep up the good work my friend.

Your work is awesome Rob and I am still thinking about doing a burnt out sand drifted over 42 Chevy.

Small Build Update:

I managed to flesh  out some additional details on the ammo box.  This was a lot of math and use of my 1\35th scale ruler!

Edmund, That is a sweet trailer. It's one of the vehicle accessories that you don't see enough of. What did you use for the hinges? Cheers Dave

Adam:  LOL!  Thanks Adam it does look like a little bycycle powered ice cream truck doesn't it!  It looked a little bit like a coffin as well when I was building it which generated a lot of Diorama ideals.  Thanks for the support and taking the tme to post it is appreciated.

Dave:  Thanks Dave I have a few different versions of the Flak 38 and most of them come with the Sd.Ah.51 trailer with out the ammo box so I thought why not give a little scratch building a try.  I told myself it's just a box how hard could that be?  Turns out it can be very challenging but doable.  The hinges came from extra PE from my AS 42 build which were originally supposed to be 90's mounted vertically ont he side of the vehicle.  I dressed them up with some MIG PE bolts and added some evergreen strip underneath them to get the hinges level and walla hinges!

I finished the remaining details on the ammo box last night.  The font hitch mount took some thought as well.

Edmund,

"How hard could that be".  Confused The quote that usually starts it all.  I first heard that from my wife starting with the remodel of the kitchen several years ago.  I'll spare you the graphic details. Yes, we are still on speaking terms.

Thank you for the info on the trailer.

Cheers

Embarrassed.....Big Smile......Propeller LOL!

JUST KIDDING!  ha ha ha!!!

It looks great--scratchbuilding with PE accents--man, you're just hitting a new stride it seems every time I look in!

Hey Edmund,

Schnobs

,,,,so I thought why not give a little scratch building a try.  I told myself it's just a box how hard could that be?  Turns out it can be very challenging but doable.

Well, it looks just great.  The scratch building is a thing all to itself...keep at it, it gets easier.

Edmund,

That trailer is stunning. What is the purpose of "hooks" on top of the fenders? I can't wait to see it painted and weathered. I know, I know..... all in due time.Embarrassed

Karl:  I am thoroughly convinced you are an awesome guy so don't change a thing!!  Big Smile  Roger that Karl thanks for taking the time to visit with me.  I have a sneaking suspicion that scratch building could become very addictive!

Rick:  Thanks for stopping by Rick and thank you for the kind words. I couldn't;t agree with you more the Ed a year ago would have had a heart attack drifting so far off the page but now it just seems like the right think to do.  Maybe someday I will make a master that will "Rule Them All: HAHAHHAHA  Stick out tongue

Trailer looks pretty sharp there Ed, very nice work on the scratch-build for it! Yes Before you know it you'll be building entire models out of nothing but popsickle sticks and hair clippings! Propeller

Wish I could offer some insight into the hooks on the fenders, they are an interesting feature but I've never actually come across any real explanation of why they are there or seen them performing any sort of function per se in various photos of the Flak 38 either in transit or in action. Looking at the fenders did get me curious about the containers mounted on the insides of the fenders between them and the ammo storage box. In your research did you see these fitted on the ammo box version of the trailer vs. the towed gun version of the trailer? The reason I ask is that those boxes were designed to hold ready clips of 2.0cm ammunition which makes sense on the towed gun trailer but which may or may not have also been present on the ammo box version. The one on the hinge side in particular looks like it might interfere with the lid opening properly on the box storage. Now I'm going to have to go back and dig up pics to satisfy my curiosity unless you can answer it for me. Big Smile

LOL! Thanks Bill it was fun.

Great question actually that I have not found as of yet a definitive real world reference picture with the correct angle to determine that,

The lid only is designed to open at a 90 degree orientation so the extra magazine containers should not interfere and I have found plenty of model reference that depict this but of course they are subjective.

My gut feeling about the hooks on the top of the fender is that they represent some type of tie down system for extra stowage.  This is only conjecture on my part and is not factually based.

That pretty much matches with my impression as well after flipping through a couple of refs, there's just nothing definitive to go by...since the ammo versions were essentially just the towed gun version with a box slapped on top of it to hold the ammunition, I would imagine that the holders would've been retained too. Good point about the 90-degree orientation, hadn't considered that.

The hooks certainly look like some kind of cleat/tie-down type of thing...makes as much sense as anything else I can think of myself. Wink

Bill:  Well after lots of research looking up Dave's questions I saw more work was going to be necessary on the trailer.  The walk around shots here demonstrate that I needed some mud flaps on the rear fenders and leather strap tie downs on the front fender.  I also saw the need for leaf springs for the ammo box so I added them as well.

Ed, this ammo trailer went from conception to "please make me one" in less than one week.  This is really another inspiration for those of us who have only recenlty started or returned to modeling.

You ROCK.  YOU ROCK.

Fantastic.

Keep it up, though....
