Steve it's just brilliant to see that you have decided to do a WIP/build log.  I've long been a fan of your work and it will be a real treat to have the opportunity to follow a build.

The welds are great, I do mine the same and I must say that I never noticed it as addicitive but upon reflection I must agree that it is addictive. It's so easy and rewarding when the results are seen.

Your work on the glacis is brilliant.

Goodluck with the rest of your build.

Regards,

Terry.

Thanks Terry,

ALWAYS good to hear from you.

It means a lot for me to get this kind of feedback from all you fellas ....even better.... a lot of you guys are the major talents on this forum too.

As a whole, you people know what goes into building a showpiece and that lends much validity to my efforts - not to mention positive inspiration.

 It's gettin' a bit deep in here.....http://www.godlikeproductions.com/sm/egqltpjc.gif

I like Beach music too and I'll say I even like stuff from the 50's. I would love to teleport back to the early-mid 50's. Love the styles and the cars. Just a seemly serene and simpler time.

Oh yeah, damned clever way of getting the cast numbers.

Thanks Marc,

Stretching Animation Besides stretching 'em; this is another reason to keep your old, worn and tired sprues. You never outgrow your need for casting numbers or weld effects.

I've been able to get just about any size letter/number I need merely by being observant as to what is given to me in the kit(s).

Look in the mirror! Sometimes you just have to take a good hard look.

Ok, time to put some of this together.

Using some .040 evergreen cardstock......I whacked out the additional armor for the hull sides.

That scales to just about the healer.gif image by CommentCrazyGirlrequired 1.5" thickness.

O --- kaaaaaayyyyyy, ....... .010 shy - dang, close enough……

I took a length of masking tape and stuck it to the existing hull profile and went around it with the edge of a pencil.......

I Sawing cut it out and stuck it to the plastic cardstock.

Here’s the crude template (the smaller rectangle is for later use on the barrel; yeah, that's a mystery ain't it? ............I'm just up to no good).

Welding  Next I applied the vertical weld seam to the applique armor, (which won’t be visible when I’m finished) did some corrective sanding and glued the assemblies to their respective sides. (I'm steppin' a bit out of context here)

From there, as you can see, the sand skirt mountings (more about that later) have been measured, drilled and  spot welded .......
http://www.mywelder.net/weld.gif

(cast glacis placed loosely for a visual assessment).....as well as the installation of the front (resin) upper glacis and metal lifting attachments (a better and closer shot in the next to last picture).

Below is a real world picture of the distinctive style of weld used for the attachment of the extra frontal and side armor.

……..from my own observations this detail is not featured correctly on many (if any) of the models I’ve seen of this subject.

http://www.mywelder.net/weldl.gifWell, here’s my attempt to replicate that pattern.

Believe it or not, the weld's actually doing most of the holding on of the frontal applique armor.

I think it came out fairly decent.

What'cha think?

Well, I told you that I’d forget a picture here and there.....  so the pictures of the removal of the front fenders and the attachment points have escaped me.Fly Swat         ... it ain't that hard to do anyhow.

Gotta rest, too much excitement here......

http://www.smiley-lol.com/smiley/fatigue/tres-fatigue.gif

gettin' hungry too......

Now, I got that cast glacis attached in place and things are beginning to shape up...........

And here’s THAT picture…....

Whew, I’m gonna take another breakhttp://arts.uwaterloo.ca/~epierard/images/emma_fun_gif.gif   .....yyaahhhh...... break, break....................whoopee......

have fun.......  be back soon……….  the fun will continue.

Hey Buddy  :  )

It is nice to come home after a crappy day at work and turn on the Disaster Master show!

Animated, Friendly, and down right informative !

Terrific, accurate weld representation, Steve, and drilling all those holes for the skirts must be a biatch 1/35...

they were killer for me in 1/16 a couple years ago, and your weld seams around the lifting eyelets look superb also .................  Steve , there is just something about Sherman ........dang.....

Thanks for perking me up

Daywalker

Can I ask how you replicated the welds on the side and front armor?  It looks just like the life-size photo to me.  Very well executed!

Thank you, Thank you.

Hope it helps someone.

Just one of the ways I do things..........

It's my very own original idea.

It's mine, mine, mine.

         http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSeDSYk_ywCm0CoZt1Vj2so2CuWZjm4o9DPtM8tswpT7kOEIrj5Pg

The moment I saw the picture of the weld, first thing that came to mind was "SPRUE"

.http://www.helpkevin.org/Phish/images/AnimatedHippieVan.gif....remember the old 60's song "HAIR"

http://www.willymacmusic.com/images/Wlly%20on%20Guitar%20without%20background%20-%20small.gifOkay, start humming..............

Give me a table with sprue, long beautiful sprue
Shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there, sprue, table length or longer
Here baby, there, momma, everywhere, daddy, daddy

Let it fly in the breeze and get caught in the trees

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/hs429.ash2/71158_258001557904_7859632_n.jpg

..... ha, heh......sometimes I'm such a Dumb Ass

Yep, this is what'cha can do with sprue.

Here's the how, gotta hurry-I wanna see NCIS.

1. Stretch out a lott'a sprue.

2. Glue a layer into place - laquer thinner.

3. Give it 3 or 4.

4. Add another layer and soak it.

5. And so on until it looks right, you can use a blade to rake lengthwise to enhance the effect.

In the end it will be very soft, give it 48 or so to dry completely.

Anything else, just ask.

Dang, NCIS is a stinkin' rerun tonight...........
