116 Wheels nearly there Sept 10

Well its a Russian Voroshilovets Tractor , Picked this one up a few weeks ago just because it looked supoer cool. and I was browsing through the GB section and seen a "Made in the USSR" Gb and fell in love with the idea of entering.

Well last Sunday evening I sat down and started on the kit, the 150 track links cleaned up very easily and have a snap together feel to them, the kind remind me of the older model kasten sets in colour and presentation and of course workability. Three hours roughly had the tracks ready.

the tractor has a lower hull spotless clean and beautifully produced, in this shot I have added front details and exhausts and final drive housings.

The drive sproxkets had a fair amount of floash but that is no major inconvenience.

Some of the major components,

THe Tarp.

The bonnet, a beautiful piece.

The Cab again excellently done.

THe return rollers just snapped in place for the moment there is six of these sets and more on the suspension assemblies which gives you a total of 20 return rollers.

The underside of the flat bed, this is the only place I have encountered ejector pin marks and filled them. There is more on the back of the suspension assemblies but they are almost invisible.

The flat bed assembled, the interior parts are not glued in yet.

Just a quick shot of what we are looking at so far,

Now for the intensive/boring bit, 64 road wheels.

These glue together in pairs and are mounted in sets of four.

This is the suspension assembly, two springs which literally clip in place and two return rollers, there is pin marks on the back of these but they will be hidden by the hull.

The progress so far, not glued up for the moment because I need to spray in sub assemblies.

All together so far this accounts for just under 10 hours work.

This is an expensive kit €38.

Maybe not as expensive as a new Tamiya or Dragon release. The quality is certainly up there. Its a great subject, and on another note I have never recommended a kit that would be great for a first armour build but this is. I love it.

Greg, Armornut Eric and Maj Mike thanks for the comments,Bish thanks for dropping by, just to let you know I was working on the 251/20 during the week and I hope to finish it this summer.

Steve, Billp, Billc and Gamer thanks for the comments.

I don't have a photo update yet but to bring you up to speed I have painted the lower hull and all the running gear, I did hand paint all those rubber wheels. Road wheels idlers and return rollers totalling 88 tires. It still only took about 3 hours to edge all the tires in and back for about 20 minutes to finish painting..

Still only at about 12 to 14hours so far and its really enjoyable. I will do some photos tomorrow and hope to post during the week.

I spent the last two nights doing the road wheels for an early Tiger, I thought that was bad... Painting road wheels is to armor what masking canopies is to aircraft, tedious (at least in my opinion).

Andy & Karl thanks for the comments. Karl I can honestly say with hand on heart that this is one really super kit.

Well I have an update ready. I'll just go through the photos as there is no modifications made and no trouble at all.

The paint progress so far I ran out of my rattle can and had to buy two more on thursday.

Those roadwheels

track assembly took about an hour and a half.

I have done some highlighting and some washes, I'm going to hold out on further weathering until all base coating is done and all the weathering may be better done all together.

The tracks were painted with humbrol polished steel from a rattle can.

I must give the story as it happened. I thought all week that this monster needed something to tow and as I was going out to buy paint on thursday at lunchtime I thought that if the shop had a lovely big piece of Russian artillery to pull then I would invest. €50 by the way but worth it.

I have started construction on this gun but have no pics readyy as yet but I will say that it is not of the same quality as the tractor.

So heres the sprues .........

I will try to get updates done ASAP.

Well its been a week of working on the Gun. I have the Tractor complete and ready for paint, The tractor is really a shake and bake kit, falls together.

The gun is really a beautiful kit but between bad fitting parts and flash it is slower going. I got the guntube done and was surprised that it took two evenings to get the barrel right, lots of Humbrol filler thinned with humbrol cement.

Well on with the pic's.

The carriage so far, this is a bit fiddly to get straightened, thet locating tabs are very loose so getting everything lined up is touch and go, the easy way out was to assemble the front axle which is in the final stages of constructtion and use it to secure the front of the carriage ensuring proper alignment. This assembly beside placed behind the tractor gives you a 16 inch model, so it will be bigger with the barrel.

The spade in travel mode.

The bottom of the spade required a lot of filling.

The limber assembly.

Some of the detail on the carriage, there is no shortage of detail so weathering will be a pleasure, even drybrushed lightly to bring up some rivets.

The detail on the ammunition winch, its a beauty.

THanks for all the replies, well appreciated. It's been a kinda slow process getting the howitzer finished/built.

I am almost there and I must confess that while it is a mixed bag of nuts, excellent in parts and almost east european in others, but all in all an excellent kit. Slightly expensive though.
