The Official AMPS East "Pattin' myself on the back" thread
Posted by wing_nut on Sunday, September 25, 2011 12:41 PM

As has been down the past few years of the AMPS East show, those FSMers that showed the armor building community what we can do have come to the forum and shamelssly given themselves some high 5's.

So not being shy in these casesWhistling I will be happy to start the ball rolling.

1st, a HUGE congrats to Dupes and Rob, aka scratchmod, for a MAJOR metal haul.  Between the 2 of them i would say they took the lion's share of the top honors. Lots of metals went out to TEAM FSM this year  and I salute each and every one of you. So I invite Marc, Rob,  Mike, Boyd, Nat and Al to add there wins to the list.

I brought 3 models and got a bronze for a Stug II G, and a gold each for the Marder II M and the 144th Peanut Butter Panzer "Tiger I, On The Road Again"   The latter finally answers that age old question... Size does not matter!Wink

Congratulations on well deserved awards Marc, especially that Marder! She is a beauty!Yes I also enjoyed hanging out, and talking as well as taking a turn at the judging table with you. The day always seems to go by so fast!

A little later, I'll take some pics of my awards, and post em.

No Surprise at all Marc. 3 for 3 is a very good percentage. Congrats.

AMPSEast is definately one of the modeling highlights of my year. I really do look forward to the show and the opportunity to catch up with a lot of people that I don't get to spend much time with. It is the show where I 'cut my teeth' in competition and judging, so it holds a special place for me.

That all being said, I'll join Marc with a little self-congratulatory picture posting:

I had two entries:

My Marder III H which was built for the Marder Madness Build. I added it to a base to give it a sense of place (although it is not attached to the base). For this, I won a Silver medal:

My second entry was inspired by the 150th Anniversary of the start of the US Civil War. Last year at AMPSEast, I purchased the 54-mm Verlinden 8-Inch Armstrong Rifle. This artillery piece was emplaced at Fort Fisher in North Carolina and captured by Union troops in 1865. Today it is on display at West Point. My presentation of this kit earned me a Gold medal:

And, to keep in the spirit of the moment, I thought I'd show you guys my next project:

CLEANING THE BENCH!!!! I'll spend the next few days COMPLETELY cleaning and reorganizing my space so I can get cracking on some new builds soon (like, say for the Blitzkrieg in the West and the Panzer III GBs.... Whistling)

Hey, thanks Wingy! Big Smile

I just took some pics of the behemoth with Mia's camera...once she downloads I'll post some of them up here.

For those of you that have never seen Wing_nut's work in person - you're missing out. That Marder and mini-Tiger are ridiculously good.

Oh, and for the record - size DID matter! Devil

LMAO  WOW... talk about being at both ends of the extreme.  Well, I guess the true answer remains undetermined.

Thanks all for the kudos.

Marc, congrats! Beer This is great that many of builds from Marder Madness have brought home awards.  Now you see that you send FSM a picture... I won't be surprised if it will be published too.

My Tamiya Marder III which I built for the Panzerjager GB got a silver in the Intermediate category:

And finally my Hobby Boss ZSL-92B Chinese IFV which won gold in the intermediate category, my first ever gold!

I apologize for the pics not being very crisp, but it;s very early in the AM, and I'm not fully awake!

Hey, love that arty Civil War arty pice Boyd.

Thanks Tigerman. It was my first all resin kit and, even though it had relatively few pieces, it did present some unique challenges and I made a few mistakes along the way (which I was up until midnight the night before the show trying to correct!!).

It also represents a bit of a departure from my typical WWII German stuff (although, the Germans wore grey, the Confederates wore grey.... maybe not such a departure after all! Stick out tongue)

Still, it came out almost exactly as I had envisioned it when I bought it and I am very happy with it overall.

Fellas - finally got some pics of the award winners. Sorry they aren't a bit brighter, but my photobooth won't hold even HALF of the big guy, so no luck there! My dining room table will have to suffice.

First up is the Tamiya StuG III Ausf. B I finished sometime this spring - took a silver.

Second is the Trumpeter Morser Karl Gerat w/Railcars. Took a Gold, People's Choice, and the Show Theme award.

Like I mentioned in the "other" AMPS East thread, this was my first year competing in the Advanced category...because of the quality of builds that are usually presented at the show from the Advanced crowd, I was expecting (and would have been happy with!) bronzes for my entries. Thought I might have a shot at the show theme award just because of the sheer size of the Morser (see previous size-related comments). Turns out I found some judges that liked my style of building.

Pretty fired up, and yes, trying to come up with some way to match this next year...hmmmm. Hmm

Mark the Karl Morser deserved the Gold and other awards, not for the size, but for your skill at building such a large model and doing it right. I did check it out for some time and really didn't find a thing wrong with it. Build and paint were right on bro. Again, a big congrats....and man what a shocker when I saw your name with it. Too cool ..

Marc - I looked very hard at your model as I was the "Theme" judge. Your model was worth every ounce of gold and well deserving of the theme award. The plus for me was to be able to present you with the award.

You have come a long way over the years. Keep on plugging. Congrats....

Congrats to all... great stuff....   Dupes congrats on the theme award, well deserved...

Boyd- did not know what civil war entry was yours, was one of my faves....

The quality/quantity of entries was (I think) better than last year. Made me dust off my bench and get some plastic going...  next GB I join, I will buy a beer to everyone at APMS if I dont complete the entry....  Beer
