Jagdpanzer IV unit markings
Posted by dogzilla17 on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 2:21 PM

Hello All -- finally in the detailing stage of Dragon's excellent Jagdpanzer IV - just a question re unit designations , I've already gone w/ vehicle '313 ' of the 15th Pzgren Div- Panzer colorsIII indicates the unit insignia is a white star w/ the unit commander's initial- anyway I was hoping someone could identify these unit insignia as they are not called out in the instruction sheet

The 15th had a number of smaller units that had Jadgpanzer/Panzerjäger companies/platoons which I suspect might be on this decal sheet --

Thanks in advance - I'll try to post pics after the crew is completed

Perhaps the most iconic image of a Jagdpanzer is the series of shots taken of the ones assigned to the 116th Panzer Division in Normandy (Greyhound Division)...most of the other pics of these vehicles seem to be limited to three-digit vehicle ID numbers...

...you are right about the white star from the 15th Panzergrenadier Division---it looked just like a US star.  I've seen pics of that marking on Mk IV's and other vehicles but never on a Jagdpanzer.  In fact, I was unaware that the 15th were ever assigned these vehicles...

PS:  The decal sheet you scanned has several Army and SS Divisonal markings and one StuG Brigade marking but nothing from the 15th... keep in mind that many of the tank-destroyer units were armed with Hetzers and Marders as well...

Vielen Dank Herr General -

The instruction sheet indicated '313' belonged to the 15th PzGren Div - Below link is what I referred to regarding the Jadgpanzer/Panzerjäger sub-units

Guess I'll just stay w/ the numerals & Balkankreuz--

Appreciate your lending me a (back)hand!

Generally speaking, the sub units would not have their own insignia. If a 3 number serial was carried, this would indicate the Company/Platoon/vehicle when reading left to right.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

The 15th fought primarily in Afrika, and in the Italian Campaign (with great distinction)...I also believe it was active in the Battle of the Bulge, where it may have received Jagdpanzers.
