Thought provoking topic, and you've touched on a few things that I think are good discussions but I'll try to not ramble. My first thought was about the 'celebrity status' of some modelers and them creating a fb page, or their own website/blog, etc. That's nice, but not really my MO when it comes to modeling. Your comments about 'community' resonate with me, and that's precisely why I reach out and involve myself. I'm an officer in my local club and have thoroughly enjoyed being a member on this forum. I love being around plastic and being around those who share that passion....it's as simple as that.

I spent many years modeling in solitude for the sake of modeling, but when I got involved in the community my enjoyment was increased, just as I thought it would be by being around others with the same mindset about the hobby as I had.

I visit some sites/pages/blogs occasionally, but for me the online presence is based right here at FSM, and I don't seek out 'names' in the hobby per se; I'm just looking to find some models to look at, and perhaps learn a technique or two or read a kit review. As for fb, I do have a page, and so does my club. For the club I agree it is a means to reach out and have a public profile (we do strive to interact with our community at large), but for me my page is not just about modeling. And at that, I post maybe once every three months, not necessarily about what's on my workbench. I don't care who knows what I had for lunch or when I go to the loo. I do use it for what many here do- a convenient way to keep in touch with friends.

I have a facebook page, but mostly because some of friends on it and post updates on it instead of phone or email. So I have it just to keep up, but never post anything on it myself.  Don't like the tradeoffs - but like others have said, that's another discussion.

I do like posting builds in my own website, so I can revisit my own work whenever I like. It's a little history of my own efforts. I also post military museum pictures I've visited, thought it would be useful to folks who are planning a trip to see what to expect. I know I'm always on the lookout for one whenever I travel - to the dismay of my wife (Another Airplane museum!???!!!)

i don't text either. i have one friend i IM with daily right now due to his situation. i am on facebook but not often, mostly to catch up on nieces and some old army buddies. my clubs have a page but i rarely go there. i do post finished builds on WARWHEELS.NET and send some pics to selected friends. once i redo my website i will post there but that will be in lieu of using photobucket.

i enjoy the give and take of this forum, the good suggestions, bad jokes, and a feeling of community.

yes back in the prodigy dial up days my frau had car problems and couldn't phone me for 4 hours. next month i got a second  phone line for my birthday.

I set up FB page years ago to be used for biz purposes and didn’t touch it for years from the day I set it up. I only did cuz everyone said I was nuts not to. It is only recently that I frequented FB as part of the "Thunder Run" group for the diorama project I am involved with to go into the Ft. Stewart museum.  I am pretty sure that once I complete my M1A1 for the build that will slip away. 

 I can see where a molder might want to use an FB page to show their stuff and WIP’s.  It's easier than frequenting multiple forums or updating a website.  Been ages since I’ve updated mine.

 I’ve never been a big fan of FB, Twitter or anything that resembles them.  They seemed to be that they are outlets for too many people to care about the actions of other when they can’t even get there own crap together.  Really?  You want to “Like” the fact that someone took a dump?  But as a society seems that’s what people want to do which is in evidence by the amount of reality TV.   Jeez don’t get me stated on that.

Kids are even moving out of FB -- instagram, twitter and other newer vehicless are seeing droves of teens leaving FB (ask me how I know!)

I prefer being on the FSM  forum then Facebook.

I won't do the facebook thing with my modeling. I would never be able to maintain it because of all the other stuff that goes on. Its not worth the effort for me.

Me neither, since I never use texting.

 I don't like having a leash 'round my neck so I don't even turn on my phone unless "I want to use it".  I have it for "MY" convenience - not others ( ).

I primarily use only my land line and I intend to keep my land line too.

Also, what Kind of a nut (not YOU wingnut - wingnuts not included) stands outside his own residence (in the rain) talking on a cellphone?

OK...my turn to chime in. Since I have a FB account, a web site and participate in forums, I think I have a bit of perspective. I don't post my build logs on FB but may announce updates and will post a finished pic. Like Gino and Marc I am involved in FB with the FT Stewart Museum build. Also modeling club page and the AMPS page. As someone stated it is also good for vendors and manufacturers. I also use it for contact with many of my military buddies.

Like Gino, I have basically a blank profile and use FB for contact with modeling and military friends only. The forums are a different venue. As Karl stated this is more like family. Here is a place to post build logs and share with the family while getting their feedback.

Lastly a website is more like an artist portfolio.It allows you to show your work and express your art without interaction. I agree with Marc in that it is a PITA to keep up. I am overdue on mine right now.

Now with that all said, they are all different and all reach different people. Thru my website I have made contacts all over the world, both military and modelers. My modeling friends on FB are for the most part very different than the forum friends. Some may participate in forums but a forum that I may not be on. Lastly there is my long standing family here.

All have there purpose and they are all tools. It is just how you use each tool. They all have their place, the biggest problem is having enough time to keep up with all the electronic mediums and still having enough time to actually model!

That's the biggest struggle of them all...it's not possible to stay up to date with everything, everywhere these days in terms of what demands time/attention! . The different mediums have their uses and advantages/disadvantages. Forums get the most of my attention for model interactions and following builds as FB's format, IMHO, doesn't lend itself well to blogs because that's not what it's designed for. More and more modelers are on FB though these days especially internationally and I've found a lot of stunning work through 'shared' posts or links that way that otherwise I would've been totally oblivious to, so I spend some time there daily but not nearly the same as I do with forums.  

Bill - I have to agree with you on the international builds. Especially some of the dioramas are amazing.

Trying to spend more time here. Sometimes the rest of life gets in the way of all of the hobby!

Rob: I remember rec.models.scale.  I recall being one of the  first users of one of the AFV sites too -- www.track-link.com

That was back in 1996!  Even before missing-lynx.com

I remember early Track Link, that place was the wild west of armor modeling with flame wars and online bullying being the norm when I stumbled onto it in the 90s. At least in RMS, you could add posters to your "kill file" and *plonk* you would not get their messages. Users suffered from an acute case of  "keyboard courage".

I stopped visiting there when the owner guessed that certain staff members of Armorama used the same passwords for their Armorama accounts as they did their Track Link accounts. Apparently he could see users passwords at Track Link. He used that information to eavesdrop at Armorama, but something he read in the staff only forum at Armorama caused him to post as himself and give himself away.

He justified it as helping Armorama discover a security leak and the dangers of using the same log on information at multiple sites.

It' up to the opinion of everybody what will be preferred. There's no need to insert too many informations at a social network as FB. Nevertheless it's an easier way to come into contact. To my opinion easier than it is here at FSM Forum. Time consuming are all of those electronical stuff of today. But how will you get quick informations dealing with new kits, supplements etc. - because the most producers are also using FB ? Showing pics at FB is easy going if you don't use any other web-based item for pics. However FB combined both, contact with family and real friends and with some other modellers  ( it's up to you to choose your friends ) ... in accordance with those informations you want to post, even in regard of those guys spread over the world who are interested to read and see all ( may be NSA or any others of  intel ! )

Karl this is a great discussion topic. I have noticed a move towards various people posting individually on FB rather than keeping ties with the forum. I do find it a little sad, as some previously very active and high quality forums are barely worth visting any longer. I do like the community feel of a forum, with the wide and sometimes unpredictable conversations that result. Forums are a bit like going to a bar or pub, whereas FB seems like visiting people in their home. I personally like the idea of going to a bar where everybody knows your name...wasn't there a TV show about that?

There is one benefit to posting model related items on face book as opposed to an open modeling forum. Many times there are dust ups online and you end up with your own personal detractor. That person will feel the need to haunt your every post and reply with hateful messages. I've seen it done on multiple boards. Even our sleepy science fiction forum would be a stopping point for these online stalking sessions back in the day.

At least with face book, you can set your posts so that only friends can see and reply. That was a benefit to the old RMS "kill file" and the "ignore" button on sites like Armorama and IPMS.

Many of you here who remember the star ratings system that our posts used to have will remember why we no longer have them. There were a few users who would down rate everyone's posts just because. And there were several users here that were upset if their posts were down rated.

facebook has its place.  i am a firm believer that model forums are the place to be, i am a member on many.  for a model builder they are valuable as they allow a convenient tool to show the build and gain that information needed to improve.  much like a model club meeting.  wonderful place to meet and interact with those of similar interests.  facebook is more like everyday life to me.  there are a bunch of folks who will say yeah thats nice and have no clue why you do what you do.  

i have a facebook page and have had one for a couple of years.  i also have a site for the model club here, my real estate office, a future business adventure, and a page for remembering the attack on hawaii.  i am not the best host for them as i firmly subscribe to the notion only post what you need to.  i dont post a lot of stuff on any of them.  but they have been useful.  it has put me in contact with folks who could become potential clients and customers as well as kept me in contact with family members and the few important updates on what is happening 3000 miles away.  i have only posted a few of my attempts on my personal page.  just because most on there do not understand still why i build.  a big plus for me is that i have had the pleasure to chat with several model builders that i have followed for years in the various magazines.  that is an opportunity that i dont think i would have had if not for a tool like facebook.

I'm not even on Facebook anymore. I did post pics of some of my models and I might have gotten a response on them from one or two people that were on my friends list. I can understand why some people who are involved with model building in a professional sense or who are big time contest winners at national competitions and such would primarily use Facebook to advertise their work. Facebook was cool when I first got on it several years ago but over time it became too much of a bad habit and a nuisance. So I left.

I remember Rob from Rec.models.scale, because of his last name. Funny because I can't remember what my handle was there, though I can still remember the serial number of my m-16a2, 6251144, from my days as a parachute rigger in the 82nd 23 years ago. Damn, just made myself feel old. Lol

I estimate, I discovered RMS sometime in late 1996 or early 1997. As an AOL user back then, I first discovered online modeling on the old AOL scale modeling newsgroup in 1996. That site was very sleepy with very little movement. I do recall the model railroad AOL newsgroup being quite hopping. It was shortly after that that I found RMS and Track Link sometime later.

Hard to believe how long ago that was.

I'm on three modeling forums, and can't keep up properly with those. I do have a fb page, post when traveling, but it's more business-related (food and wine) than anything else.

I'm a little touchy about "celebrity status", even though there are several modelers on all three forums I participate in that would qualify. I guess it's just a holdover from days gone by when I had to break into organizations that were very clique-oriented and got a bad feel from it. Modeling just doesn't seem to be that way, most forums even less so.

Finally, I can't imagine putting my modeling on fb. Most people I know, family AND friends, consider my models toys, and think of me as a little "weird" for "playing " with them. That's one reason the finished models are in a locked display case.
