Subfixer, ever heard of a 'Darwin Stubbie'. A 'Stubbie' is the local slang for a small bottle of beer, usually around 345 - 375ml. Now the guys in Darwin (State capital of our Northern Territory) live in a very Hot and Humid climate. They are known to get a tad thirsty up there and, seeing as going to the fridge expends energy thus creating more heat, they developed what is known as a 'Darwin Stubbie" - a 2 litre (2000ml for non-metric types) bottle of beer. see: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3278789070&category=56270.
Is that a generous serve of beer or what!
Now for the moment everybody (well at least Zokissima) has been waiting for. I didn't think these would be as difficult as they proved to be, and after the quick reply by Captain Caveman I thought there would be a rush of answers. Anyway:
8A: The Humber Hexanaut (or Hexonaut as some references have quoted) GS 6x6 Amphibious car. Developed by the British in the latter part of WW2, only 6 were actually built. The pic is the last remaining one which is held in a smaller British museum ( the so called nuked building in the rear)
8B: A38 Vickers Valiant Tank. Basically a development of the Valantine tank, a few were produced before the project was dropped in 1945. The test vehicles were equiped with 6 pounder guns (57mm), but plans were to fit a 75-76mm (probably the 17 pounder) to the tank. I have it on good authority ( a guy in my modelling club that actually drove one) that this tank was so hard on the driver that they needed rest after only an hour or two.
Thanks to those who participated, and congrats to those who got at least the Valiant. Special pat on the back to our local Brit army specialist Captain Caveman.
Ron's site is down at the moment, so I will try and post quiz #9 later. I think it is good to do lesser known vehicles but I'll try make this next one a little easier.
