AFV Quiz #8 (in M1's absence)
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 11, 2004 10:08 PM
M1abrahmsrules has left us for a couple of weeks, and I have volunteered to run the weekly quiz in his absence. Same rules apply, please do not post serious answers or tips in the thread, e-mail me and I will post the results on a regular basis.

This week I have chosen 2 pics, one easy and one not so easy. For a bit of variety I have also picked one non-combat vehicle....he, he. No hints at this stage. I'll give you all a full week on these, answers next Friday. Good luck.

....and er, no the Banana Splits did not drive around in the first one.

Guesses so far 4

Correct on 8a:
Captain Caveman

Correct on 8b:
Captain Caveman (did you even have to think about these, you were so quick!)
Poniatowski

Geez, I don't know either, but you need to change over to the CinemaScope lens on the first one!
Looks like the end of a Clint Eastwood Western!

Anyway, the first one is definitely the Schnukelwagon.

There was a nucear meltdown near the first ones factory. That is one of the mutants that came out, as a factory worker was eating a bananna while working on a schwimmwagon, and look what happened!

TSK, TSK Captain, a real hint to everyone and you are the only one to get it right at this stage. Looks like you might still be the only one though! He, He.

Zokissima, M1 usually gives you only 4 days. I gave you all a week 'cause some of us don't see the posts till the next day your time. We Aussies can be real generous when we want to be.

Subfixer, ever heard of a 'Darwin Stubbie'. A 'Stubbie' is the local slang for a small bottle of beer, usually around 345 - 375ml. Now the guys in Darwin (State capital of our Northern Territory) live in a very Hot and Humid climate. They are known to get a tad thirsty up there and, seeing as going to the fridge expends energy thus creating more heat, they developed what is known as a 'Darwin Stubbie" - a 2 litre (2000ml for non-metric types) bottle of beer. see: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3278789070&category=56270.

Is that a generous serve of beer or what!

Now for the moment everybody (well at least Zokissima) has been waiting for. I didn't think these would be as difficult as they proved to be, and after the quick reply by Captain Caveman I thought there would be a rush of answers. Anyway:

8A: The Humber Hexanaut (or Hexonaut as some references have quoted) GS 6x6 Amphibious car. Developed by the British in the latter part of WW2, only 6 were actually built. The pic is the last remaining one which is held in a smaller British museum ( the so called nuked building in the rear)

8B: A38 Vickers Valiant Tank. Basically a development of the Valantine tank, a few were produced before the project was dropped in 1945. The test vehicles were equiped with 6 pounder guns (57mm), but plans were to fit a 75-76mm (probably the 17 pounder) to the tank. I have it on good authority ( a guy in my modelling club that actually drove one) that this tank was so hard on the driver that they needed rest after only an hour or two.

Thanks to those who participated, and congrats to those who got at least the Valiant. Special pat on the back to our local Brit army specialist Captain Caveman.

Ron's site is down at the moment, so I will try and post quiz #9 later. I think it is good to do lesser known vehicles but I'll try make this next one a little easier.

And now to acquire a Darwin Stubbie in order to help digest the subject of this week's quiz. I guess that the boys in Darwin must drink it down mighty quick, or else it might get too warm to drink. What am I thinking? They're Aussies, beer has no chance to get warm. I did convert a Scot I met in Holy Loch to the virtues of cold beer after he tried a Tenant's Lager that I left in the trunk (boot) of my car overnight during the winter.
What is the deal with that Humber? What was the intent of the design? It would seem that with its narrow width that it would have a deep draft. Ummmm..... draft..........beer.....
