I finally completed the Mortar diorama last night. I could keep adding more and more, but I have other thinks to do. I do need to put a label on it still, but that will take a minute.

Lots of pics so be prepared.

As always, comments and critiques welcome.

Right, I just compared all 3. I was a little mistaken in that I have built one of the Academy kits. I have so many box's of 72nd vehicles, especially German ones for use in Dio's, that I forget what I have and have not built. The Academy and Hasegawa kits are identical in size. I compared various parts and they all match. The Italeri is a fraction, and I mean a small fraction, bigger. All 3 are broken down in a similar way. But the Academy seems the most detailed of the 3.

I just checked my previous posts and I used the Academy kit with my He 111Z. Looking at it now it seems fine to me, I have a figure right next to it and it looks in scale to my eye.

I should mention that mine if not fom this Fw 190 kit but from Academy vehcile set which comes with a jeep and ketten. So i am assuming its the same Kubel.

Thanks Bish, that would be great to know if there is a difference.  I was eyeballing the Hasegawa kit with the motorcycle if I need to get a different one.  A motorcycle would be cool in the scene as well.

Nice start on the Kubel Steve. I have a few of these though not build one yet, but I have heard come across any mention of issues with the scale. I will dig one out today and compare to to the Hase and Italeri ones i have in the stash.

Thanks Bish and Terry,
The Doog,
I didn't take this picture at the right angle, but the tarp is covering half of the barrels. I have better pictures earlier in the thread. as far as scratchbuilding, I tried to scratch a barrel and believe me, the tarp looks better.

Here’s my wee little Kublewagen. I built it in about 30 min, but it seems more like a 1/85 scale than a 1/72. Oh well, I'll get it together and see if it looks out of place in the dio.
Cool tiny kit though.

That's really a nice presentation coming along there.

In the future, if you break of something like a barrel, it's really not hard at all to fabricate an ersatz barrel out of stretched sprue or even just some appropriately-sized sprue, especially if you're going to put a tarp on it. And the tarp ideally SHOULD drape over a barrel to look realistic, in truth. It doesn't look too bad though there.

That is looking good Steve. I do like what you have done with the tarp being removed, nice idea.

Here's a small tease of the Morser diorama. I still have to complete the Kublewagen to finish the scene. The group just received orders from the commander and are discussing the plan of action. The dog and guy on the locomotive are engaged in a stair down as another of the loco crew is checking out the loco's brakes. Although he's hard to see, the locomotive engineer is standing on the cab platform waiting for the meeting to end.
The Sargent leaning on the halftrack and Private are shooting the breeze as the rest of the halftrack crew are getting ready to move out.

Anyway, that's how I see it.

Here is the Sd Kfz 7/1 quad AA gun. I broke off 1 of the guns during the build and it went through the wormhole and hasn't come out yet, so I added a tarp to hide my boo boo. Next, I'll build the Kublewagen.
Anywho, enjoy.

Here is the camo netting so far. I added some landscaping turf to them. My only concern is that it’ll hide the mortar so well you won't be able to see much detail. I’ll have to see if I can cover most of it, like they are just covering it.

I'm working on the halftrack today. I'm going to have the flak gun deploying. One of the barrels broke off and I can't find it, so to hide it, there will be a guy removing a tarp off the broken half. I think I can make it work.

I like the look of those nets. I have never been to sure about what to use for nets in 72nd. I will be interested to see how they look once applied.

Tosco makes some really nice figures in plastic, at leastthe ones for my OTS German 105mm. i wouldn't get to detailed on the figures. prime base coat the geman gray green, light tan for the skin than a darker sudge all over and wiped off so it fills some creases. the important thing on a diorama is the story.

is your FLAK going to be deployed? is this just a swich "in the field" or part of a railroad yard, albeit a small one. maybe a switch tower in the back vorner with the kubelwagen parked next to it? that would be less crowded. since that puts the FLAK in the front you could have a parallel road with it on that. just some thoughts.

MC what did you decide on for net material?

I used cheesecloth. I am going to apply some spray glue and add some landscaping turf to and see what that looks like.

MC what did you decide on for net material? i am not sure what the german poles looked like, just what we used in the late '70s. other subjects, eh? like a romulan battlecruiser?

I haven't been working on the mortar for about a week in lieu of working on other builds, however I did work on the camo nets while I was spraying other subjects.

I know what you German Steve. I have just gotten to grips with 35th figures. In 72nd, I don't worry to much about the detail especially in things like faces and insignia.

I have not stalled on this build. I received the guys yesterday and started to paint them last night. Figures are a serious weakness of mine, especially in 1/72. This may take a while. I'm also starting to lay down the balast for the tracks and some ground cover.

Well to add just a tad more interest to this growing diorama, I followed Bish and Mike's advice and ordered a Kublewagen. The best part, I get an FW190 for free!!!

Steve

PS.
I debated getting a Munitionsschlepper

Thanks Terry,
There are 30 guys in the pack I ordered. There should be a few that work, although adding a Pz IV may be a cool addition.
