G, not at all. Field Grey it was, not to be confused with the Reed Green uniform of the same style again, but worn by tank crews intended for summer use. Nice of the Germans to make these things nice and easy.

I think they'd work Moff, though Bish and some of the others here would be more knowlegdable (grrr, I really need spellcheck).

You'd probably have to move the guy on the left's arms around though to fit those monster shells that beast flung.

 Splinter pattern camouflage is Heer, not SS. All four wear the reversible, padded, splinter-pattern / white winter suit, although it appears the one receiving the shell wears field grey pants.

It gets complicated. Publishers like JJ Fedorowicz and Schiffer, print large, lavishly illustrated....(and expensive) books on German uniforms, I have only a few of them, some are hard to justify the cost... unless you collect uniforms, which is way outta my league.

Well, I was hoping I wouldn't be writing my Ph.D. thesis on German uniforms right here and now.... But in simple terms the Waffen SS had a great variety of camouflage uniforms throughout the war. Several patterns of "Blurred-Edge", "Palm Tree", "Oak Leaf", "Plane Tree", "Dot" or "Peas" Pattern and others, in a bewildering number of summer or fall color and pattern variations. Heer camouflage uniforms are much more limited to variations of "Splinter Pattern" or the closely related "Water Pattern" styles, but still with a large number of fabric types, color schemes and production variants.

I see. The Germans were the first to find widespread use for camo on uniforms, correct? I can't think of any other nations that did that. Unless you count white ponchos as a camouflage "pattern".

According to page 8 of Camouflage Uniforms of the Waffen SS, by Michael Beaver, It was the Italians who introduced a "brightly colored camouflaged tent" in 1929, so making the Germans the second place users, (obviously excluding vehicles and aircraft, dating back to the First World War). The Germans were pioneers though in the field of camouflage research throughout the war.

Just to complicate things:  

the Germans used surplus stocks of Italian camoflage after the Italian government surrendered in 1943 and German troops occupied northern Italy.

Well, what about uniforms? I can't think of any camoflauged uniforms used by any powers in either of the World Wars other than Germany. Germany used camouflage on their M1916 Camoflauge Helmet, right? 

I can't seem to find one of my books at the moment, but as far as I know the splinter pattern Zeltbahn was the first piece of camo clothing / shelter quarter, introduced in the early 1930's. Early, pre-war SS-VT troops were issued slate-grey Zeltbahns, later including Heer splinter patterns and then developing the "Plane Tree # 6" pattern in 1938 for standardized production for SS troops.

At the risk of opening another can of worms, have you decided on a camo scheme for your potential aquisition?

One last thought...If you want to use these figures in SS mode, the only noticeable difference is SS parkas used scalloped-edge pocket flaps and Heer used straight-edged. So it's really just a matter of minor surgery and painting which ones you want.

Do you have a talent for ESP too? I was just debating whether to put it up for a vote or leave it to myself to decide. Basically, anything's open at this stage, as long as the hull is red oxide. For the gun, I was going to go with a dark gray/black baked enamel primer like they used. It's really just the gun shield and muzzle brake that's still undecided. My choices are either: 

• the ambush dot camo 
• the ambush octopus camo 
• some version of the standard German tricolor 
• whitewash over Panzer Gray 
• whitewash over red oxide 
• whitewash over the standard german tricolor
• various interesting stripy camoflauges, for example: 
• various interesting splinter camoflauges, for example:  
• one of the schemes with cartain parts painted light green and the rest red oxide (can't find any pictures, hopefully you know what I mean) 

As you can see, I haven't done a good job of narrowing down the choices

Wish I did have ESP...........I'd know years in advance what kits companies were planning to produce and in what scale.....

Considering the fact that we can go online and "build our new car ", viewing it in our choice of colours and features, one would think someone would have scanned models of tanks, ships or aircraft for us. Then inserted the 3D models into a program for us to decorate on our computers prior to actually going through the work of painting a kit.

I think someone already mentioned the one built by Karl aka The Doog a few years ago?

Oh sorry, figured you'd seen his thread but wasn't sure.

Nope that Doog used to post here as Doog's ATX I think it was, he was I assume still is mostly an aircraft guy. THE Doog does mostly armour and I think an auto now and then. 

Quite confusing...does Doog ATX still post at all? 

Moff, I haven't seen him posting here since two years or so ago. There was a big group of people left the forum including him. I'm not sure why, he was a great guy and seemed to get along with everyone. 

I'm not sure about the similar nature of their names, they were both here when I first joined the forum.

So, any suggestions for a color scheme? I'm probably going to make B/W copies of the color diagram so I can mess around with different schemes and see how the colors interact. Markers on paper aren't a great substitute for the real thing, but hey, what can I do? 

Well, the camo on those two Panthers you posted looks pretty cool. I personally really like the dot ambush and octopus schemes like the Hetzer was often painted.

If the TD had actually entered service primer red and panzer grey would probably be more accurate but heck it's a fantasy build so if you want an ambush scheme why not?
