What was the "Reign of Fire" tank?
Posted by MartianGundamModeler on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 12:20 AM
The tank used in the movie, "Reign of Fire", what was it it? This was a movie about dragons being awakened in modern times and they for all intents and puposes destroy the world. Anyway there is a tank used in the movie and based on the tip of the barrel, the side skrt, and the country it was in (England), it appeared to be either a Chieftain or a one of the Challengers. I would say Chieftain but the little odd shaped potrusion atop the very tip of the barrel is a characteristic I have only seen of both the Challengers and the Kahlid [an upgraded Chieftain used in the Jordainian army] in all the reference material I can did up namely the Illustrated Directory of Tanks of the World. Any help would be appreciated i'd like to model this subject.Big Smile [:D]

IIRC, that was the Cadillac-Gage Stingray, a light tank that was being marketed for export. Didn't meet with much success, I think.

I'm looking at the pics and the profile doesn't match either of those esp the M-60. The M-60 is very rounded. This tank is more angular and more "modern". I think something has been added to the turret which makes it difficult to ID it. This tank also has side skirts. The sting rey one and two are too angular. The turret on the stingray has a VERY pronounced forward over hang. This tank in movie doesn't have that. Next contestant come on down!

It might be a mix-and-match done up for the movie, not an unheard thing and wouldn't be the first time.

Look at the tank in Indiana Jones and similar.

Looks like a British Challenger ... I read the book, the movie version and from what they said in there except for the Helo they picked up all of their equipment once they landed...

Yeah, I'm stuck between a Challenger or a Cheiftan variant. Still haven't gotten aaround to a search yet. Maybe I will tonight.

It looks to me like the Challenger 1 Mk. 3 with the modifications the British made for Desert Storm, the up-armored side skirts and such. The turret looks totally different from a Chieftan since it doesn't have the pronounced "nose", but if the set designers made any modifications to the turret, it could be a Chieftan as well. As far as the M-60, I'm sure it isn't. The turret is too short and more angular than the M60s and the hull is totally different, also shorter and angular. The tank tread points this out to be British in origin as well with the large, one-piece, rectangular, rubber blocks. My 2 cents [2c]

I agree with you on all points. It just depentds on if they altered the turret. It looked as though there was some sor of plates addede to the side of it and the smoke launchers attached. The smoke dischargers looked pointed too far forward. It is possible that the challlenger type barrel tip could have been add but like I said before the the uprated Cheiftain used in Jordan, called the Khalid, had the uprated barrel. I'll have to take another look at the tape. I beleive my dad has it on DVD. I never really cared for the movie thst much because it was not what I was expecting. The commercials for the movie showed later modern weapons like Apache's and and what looked like Abrams battling the dragons. NONE of this was in the movie. I was VERY diappointed.Disapprove [V]

I remember that movie. I can barely remember the outline shape of that tank and I suspect it was a late version of Chieftain, maybe a Mk10-11 or what is know as a Stillhew. I don't know if the pictures below will help.

By George i think he's got it! I think that's it Anthony! I borrowed the DVD from my dad last night so I can take a closer look tonight or tomorrow. The hump on the left of the turret where the left smake discharger is what wasa making it hard for me. That hump is clearly visable on the kit and the display. it makes it look like the smokae discharger is at an odd angle. I though the movie tank had the "hump" added buecause of what looked like a "seam" under neath the smoke discharger. Now I see it's not a seam it's a CABLE! Thanks Anthony.
By the way "Anthony" is my name too!Big Smile [:D]

If memory serves, I'm pretty sure it was an M1A1. It's been a while since I saw the movie, but wasn't McCaughnahey's character a US Army guy who came over to help or something.

From a review:
"Into this dreary, apocalyptic landscape comes an unexpected visitor, an American named Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey). He's in an M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank leading a short column of combat vehicles. They even have air support in the form of a helicopter flown by Alex Jensen (Izabella Scorupco). They are the survivors of a flight from the States to England in a cobbled together Lockheed C5A Galaxy transport."

Anyhow...I coulda sworn it was an M1A1
Hope that helps

edit: another site says its a Chieftan....guess somebody'll just have to rewatch the flick.

It's definately NOT an M1. Van Zan may have been an M1 tanker in the states but they didn't get their equipment till they got to europe. Infact the only U.S. vehicle they had was a Hummer. Even the chopper they had in their convoy appeared to be European. I hope you like the movie dwight because i wasn't very fond of it. i like it more now than when i first saw mainly because it did not live up to the hype when it came out and like I said earlier the commercials for the movie DID show what look like Abrahms and Apaches battling the dragons.

The poster for the movie had a few AH-64D Longbow Apaches on it, so I was expecting them to be in the movie. They weren't and I was disappointed. MartianGundamModeler was right, the helicopters in it were European... Agusta A-109s. I'm more of a rotor head then a tread head so believe me. Looking at the pics, it may have been a Chieftain, but the turret shape still seems off to me. I haven't seen the movie in awhile so I could be wrong.

I'm thinking they added a bit to the left side of the turret and like I said the smoke dischargers on that side appear to point straight ahead instead of at an angle. yep my hopes of seeing Apahches and an Abrams in combat is what drew me to the movie theatre and all i got was none of the above. i guess they made those ads to appeal to the American audience since the whole movie took place in europe. I fell for it too! False advertising. it's a shame we never get to see much modern warfar in movies. they did do Warbirds about Apache pilots, black hawk down with grunts and hummers, and there is always an occasional "fighter flick" but none with MODERN tanks.Disapprove [V]

Beleive me i never said it was a great or even a good film.lol After my disappointment faded and watched again a year or two later it got better but there is just something "missing" from the film. Character development being one of them.

I saw the movie the other night on TV and I believe it is a Chieftain. I noticed it had what looked like a Russian machine gun mounted on the Turret. It was an interesting film but they could have done a lot more with it. He had the tank but never used, decided to use a shot gun instead. I also was waiting to see the Apaches and was dissapointed they didn't. They just skimmed over the big war that happened when the dragons apeared and that was that. I just want to know where they got there fule for the vehicles from.

That's just it, ALL of the interesting parts were left out. The whole movie could have been cut down to a half hr and tacked onto a REAL movie that had the actual war with the dragons. So much wasted potential. Fighter planes and A-10's, choppers all duking iit out in the air and antiaircraft and tanks taking them on head to head on the ground. Imagine a battalion of Abrams and Challengers headed for the dragons layer! Modern day knights in armor taking on the dragons. Now THAT would have been a movie!

You all talk about that "war" in the movie, what war ? All I saw was a final battle in what could have been a great war.

I mean they tell us that the dragons are everwhere, and it took them about 20 years, so what happened, did all the armies in the world just let dragons do their thing ???

When I watched the movie (a big mistake !!!), I had the feeling that the director or producer (or whoever does what in that industry) started a great movie, and after 10 minutes he just didn't know how to go on with it, so he decided to start the end of the movie, which then would take about 130 more minutes.

As for the vehicles, I couldn't care less what tank it was in the movie, now if it would have been a good movie, I could have been interested in making a dio with a tank and a dragon in it, but now, no way.....

Uh...Dan Cooper what thread are you reading? no one said there was actually a battle scene. We were discussing previews and poster for the movie which clearly showed Abrams and Apaches, and none of which were actually in the movie. We, like you, were talking about how great a movie it could have been if they actually showed the battle and the distruction of civilization. As far as i'm concerned there should have been plenty of tanks running around they're fire proof las time I checked. lol Also it was established in the movie that the dragons for the most part ignored anything they couldn't burn like the trucks they escaped the crop field in. So yes, we are all in agreement the movie WAS a total waste of potential.
Now on to the pic! Tahnks 13b20! Yep judging from the "boxes" on the side of the turret it's a Cheiftan. Still looks like they added onto the turret front. In fact teh mantlet isn't even visible.
