The build is coming along nicely. I can’t wait to see more progress on the base. I am always interested in how people construct there bases. Everyone seems to tackle them a little differently. Again  great work Bish

Thanks rob. I have started adding the base into my WiP as many people seem to comment on them who ever is building them. And apar from hopefully pas on some tips, its helps to encourage suggestions as well, and that has helped me out a few times.

Bish -

She is coming along nicely. I like the fact that you have the skill set and knowledge to be able to jump around and notice what is and is not correct with a kit. Your decision to use paper mache for your terrain base was well thought. Great way to form it the way you want with less cutting and mess of foam. Keep up the outstanding job and cannot wait too see her with one of your great paint jobs.

Looking good Bish! I look forward to seeing how she turns out. I will be getting back to my 251 tonight. You were right, the Fruilmodel tracks for this are an absolute unmitigated disaster/nightmare. They are so small, and are mode of castings. The simulated rubber pads/blocks do not fit properly into the tops of the track pieces, they are just terrible. You have to press so hard with an object to get them to even halfway "seat", that you destroy other connections nearby. Once I got a decent string together, when I articulated them, (like to go around a roller or drive wheel) the blocks would fall off. These things are so hard to connect, I see no possible way they can be connected on the vehicle without destroying something. I worked on these damn things until my fingers were raw, and now that they are "done", I didn't even think I will use them. I finally hit my stride while assembling the dragon "indies" using Testors orange/white tube glue, that I am going to end up using them after all. I might end up with one side being the "magic/EZ tracks" and the others from the sprue, but Oh well. I glued the first bunch weeks ago with super glue that was too thin, so they were very brittle and could not be articulated.... Overall, it was my first set of individual tacks AND Fruilmodel tracks. I put probably 25 hours and $40 into the fruilmodel tracks. I think they would work fine on a larger subject, like a tank. I am so sick of working on tracks...... I look forward to seeing more Bish! Your work is top notch. Rudy

Looking good Bish, #$#% that's a bunch of injection pin marks in the infantry compartment!

The base looks good too, also interested in how to do this to pick up a few tips.

Been moving along this week and now about ready to get the interiour painted. I veered away from the instruction sequence and aded the lower sides before adding all the fittings. There was also the odd bit that needed some filler.

I then got to adding most of the fittings. I also added the fenders now as the locating holes go right through and would need filling.

And there were a few bits to added the upper hull. The PE sets includes parts for these, but they are based on pars of the kit not used. I am not sure if Dragon updated this kit or if Eduard were being lazy and just based these on an older kit.

The Eduard set also provides head chusions for the roof of the drivers compartment. But being PE they are of course flat and they are meants to be padded. So another lesson in knowing what PE parts not to use.

The rack for the raio's and 2 front seats have been put together bt will be fitted after painting.

And the bench seats need some reshaping. They needed some thining around the sides and i used a thin piece of stryrene strip along the back and plastic rod for the front supports. I have done one with 2 more to do.

And finally the base. I have covered this with paper mache which allows me to work out the contours and i can see what might need changing before adding the celluclay. It also gives a good service for the celluclay to adhere to. I will leave this to dry for a week before adding the balsa sides.

So next up will be priming and painting the inside and i can get the radios together and other parts for the inside while thats drying.

Thanks for looking.

That's going to look great Bish. I could tell by the foam layout you had planned for rocks. Great idea for the dio layout / time period. Well, I'm aboard and will sit back and enjoy. Have fun!!

Thanks Hunter. The foam itself is nothing to do with the rocks, more the terrain, but all will become more apparent as it moves along. I am off to get a covering over that foam now.

Thnaks for the tip, but i have the commander figures i need and with a figure stash nearly as big as the model stash, hopefully i can find the other couple of figures i need.

Bish -

Good too hear. I have a "wish list" a mile long to build my statsh. Your mental picture of this dio....is it going to be set in the fall, winter or spring time? Kinda not fair your building this WinkWhistling. Enjoy the build friend, and please post a lot of photos during the build of the dio base.

Its going to be a spring/summer scene on the Russian steppe. I was going to buy a grass matt from MiG/Model Scene, but have decided to try and recreate the stoney steppe myself.

Alright Bish! -

The time has arrived! Really looking forward to watching your build. Looking over your base it is going to be a great looking dio. If your still searching for commander figures scalehobbist.com has a nice selection. Alright friend, put everything on hold and just focus on the build. (LOL) Big Smile

Thanks PJ. Is that the Ausf D kit that Rudy is doing or the Ausf C. If your not in a rush to build it, you might want to hang onto that thought for a couple of weeks. Wink

Off to a good start Bish. I know just what you mean about changing the scenery as I too want to get away from planes for a while and work on some armor. I have a 1/35 Dragon 251/17 with a 2cm gun I've been eyeing for a while.

I might be wrong, but i think Dragon does a set of command figures similar to that. As for seated radio operators, they are close to impossable to find. The only set i know of are by Hobby fan and includes one radio operator but is in winter uniform. I searched long and hard when doing my AFV /3. But i will only use one of the Dragon figures here. They come with 3 head options, one of which is wearing the type of head gear worn by Lutfwaffe FAC's. So i will keep him for a /6 Ausf B build.

Although that is a bummer of a deal, a couple of radio operators doesn't sound like a bad trade-off to me either. Not sure how easy/hard those might be to find. But those command figures would've been a nice touch too.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.  :)
