Gamera

Those track links do look good, but they still give me a migrane looking at them. Dead

Nice job scraping out the detail, looking forward to seeing the resin replacements in there.

Thanks Gamera, they are giving me a migraine too, just 36 more to cut off the spruce and clean up. I hope to have them completed by tomorrow.

It’s time for another updated after spending the last five days battling the individual track links.  I was very nervous about tackling them but everything worked out well. I will admit that they do look much better than rubber band style tracks. The cleanup of the tracks can get a bit tedious

Here is how I built them; first I put them in sections of five on a steel ruler so I could not glue it to my cutting mat. Then I glued the sections of five into one run long enough for the bottom run of track. I used a steel ruler to make sure they were flat and in-line. After that I let them sit for 30 minutes.  Then I mounted them to the vehicle and used tape to hold them in place till the top run was finished. Then I repeated the steps for the top run of tracks. Once the top run was on I set the sag for the tracks.  I hope this can help some one.

Things are looking great in your build. Beer

If I can make a suggestion, how about a quick WIP on making the trees just to give us some direction in making them.

Thanks For taking the time to look.  It looks like I will need one more tree for the base so I will do a quick WIP when I do it.

Well this weekend was a productive time for the project.  I got all the interior upgrades installed.  It did take some effort to get it done but it does look much better than if I had left it just OOB.  All the photo etch had fairly simple bends that I managed to do with just two razor blades. I did like that the set’s photo etch came with a plastic sheet on both sides of the fret that allowed me to cut the part off without it trying to feed the carpet monster.

The resin installed very well my biggest challenge was to make sure that the parts lined up correctly since there are no alignment holes.  The only parts that I had to do a little different was the visor’s I just did not have enough hands to install them with the metal covers. So I used the plastic ones and then installed the resin parts on the inside.  The biggest shame is all this detail and work will be hid once I close it up, you will only be able to catch glimpse of it through the open hatches. It has been a great learning adventurer so far.  I just need to finish up the radiator and then it’s off to the paint shop to get the interior primed and painted.

Those tracks turned out great! I've gotten so I can build the link to link ones I just don't like it!

And nice work there on the interior parts. Always good to have them in there for the pesty judge that goes around sticking his #$@% flashlight into everything (wonder how many are proctologists?)

Just a fast update to let you all know the build is still going. We had some heavy rains here and I airbrush in the garage, I normally try and avoid airbrushing during the rain, I have had some bad experiences, though truth be told it was probable operator error and not the rain.  I primed the base and the interior with Vallejo Black primer. I know that a lot of people have problems with it and I do agree that it is a little delicate but I just love the way that it levels out.  I have found that if I let it set for 2 or 3 days it works great. So the detail painting of the interior should start in 2 days.

Hi everyone just wanted to share my current progress. It is not much because I am a slow painter.  Any slower I would be going backwards.  I have been working on the lower part of the track. I have got my Vallejo Dark Yellow painted. I am not too sure about the color but we will see.  The tracks have been painted with panzer aces track primer and dry brushed with light gray. I still need to put a wash on them.  Painted the rubber on the wheels.  Working on the engine right now. If anyone has any suggestions  or comments I am more than happy to hear them.

Thanks Tojo72 and Gamera for hanging in with the build.

Just a quick update I still have not finished the painting of the interior yet but I I am getting closer. I paint the interior walls and ceilings with Model color Buff. I think the color comes close for me on the interior color of German AFV.  I was going to paint the floor buff like a lot of builds and then I decided to do some research and found out the floor color was a couple of different colors but buff was not one. I found out that in 1943 they started to paint the floors primer red. I decided to go that way but of course I did not have that color so a winged it. I like the color but I think it might be a little to red but It will work.  Of course I had to chip the inside I just like the way it looks, probable a little heavy for a lot of people. I still need to pin wash and finish weathering the inside.

Thanks Steve, Some time I find trying to get the right color is more challenging than the actual glueing of parts.

I hate to play devils advocate, but shouldn't the floor be dunkelgelb as well?

Thats an interesting look. Where you did you find the info for this. I have been woundering if it should be the normal German AFV interiour colour of Dark Yellow. I have not been able to find much info on the vehicle.

Bish,
I have the Nuts and Bolts book on the vehicle and the walk around photos of the only operational example the floors look like they were a primer red at one time now mostly bear steel.  I am with you on that there is very little information on the interior of this vehicle.  I looked through a couple of web sites and forums and could not find anything specific.  So I made an educated guess.   The Sd. Ffz. 4/1 is in all reality an enclosed fighting vehicle. The top hatch doors when open are not that large especially with someone in it so I decided to go with the colors for an enclosed fighting vehicle of the time.  The vehicles were developed in 1943 at about the same time that the orders to change the floor colors to primer red were issued.  So I decided to go with the interior as the Elfenbein and the floor in the primer red.  The inside of the hatches will be painted the same as the exterior of the vehicle.  I don’t know if I am right or wrong but that is how I arrived at my colors.    I know it is not a lot of help but I hope it will help you make some color chooses even if they are totally different from mine.

Eric,
You could be right but this is very little information on the interior of this vehicle. It primarily is a fully enclosed fighting vehicles and I opted to paint it with those colors.

Thanks Robert. I did not think about checking the Nuts and Bolts range, i like those. Which number is it, i'll have a look for that.

And thats a great help. Some times we can only do so much and with the info we have, we have to make a best guess. I often do that and if it turns out to be wrong, so be it, i will live with it. The interiour of mine will be hard to see because of the figures i am useing, but the red floor an dthe lighter sides do look god, right or not. I will probably do that myself.

And i forgot to add, i like the chipping as well. I am not a fan of over done chipping, but i think this looks very appropriate and well done. I will definaltly be useing your build for referance.

Edit: cancel my last on the book, found it, number 30. Thanks for the heads up.
