Chris, i think a tank done like this only looks right in its proper setting, so hopefully it will match right in.

Griffin, after spraying the mortar, i went over the bricks with a flat brush. I then went over some individual bricks altering the colour.

Its a lot easier than what i did last time, which was to spray the bricks then hand brush the mortar.

That's looking really good. That building is awesome. Did you paint each brick individually? It looks like it. Very cool.

Truely an outstanding job!! The detailing effects pop right out and grab your eyes. Wonderful work on both the tank and building. I'll be watching for your final presentation of this well executed dio. 

Getting close to the end now. The tank and building are done. Just got to finish the figures and bring it all together.

So, first the tank. Some light streaking with AK streak effects were followed by the kit going on. I got a set of value Gear boxes and added a backpack and Jerry cans.

Next some AK dust efefcts. I used dark earth colours lwer down and added light dust effects higher up. As soon as this was done i removed the effects from around the wheels and areas where thye crew would have climbed and brushed dust away.

And then finally some pigments. dark earth colours were applied lw down by mixing in water and slapping it on. Once dry excess was removed. Lighter colours were added higher up followe by brick and concrete pigments all over.

I do need to add some rope that would hold down the equipment, and bare metal for the teeth on the drive sprockets. But other than that, its done.

And then the building. Firstly i needed to add grass around the outside. I used a mix of scatters and grass tufs of different lengths and colours.

And then the rubble. I start with a core of uncolured celluclay. Then while wet add bricks, debris and brick dust. This is built up over several days so as not to pile in to much at once.

Once the vehicle is in place i can add a bit more around it. But for now thats it. Now i can focus on the figures and get this wrapped.

I picked up a copy of the dio book back in the late '80s. I've read it cover to cover at least a dozen times, it's all worn, dog-eared, and has a few paint splatters on it now... 

 

That is so cool you have that book. I wish I had the copy I spent hours as a 14 year old looking at. Yes sir, I would hold on to that treasure. My other favorite was "Modeling Tanks and Military Vehicles"(1982-'83).

I will second that about Mr Paine. He wrte a book which i think you can still buy through FSM, the btitle of which escapes me but i will check to tonight, which is deffinetly worth a look.

Thanks Chris. I got into Dio's in the 80's after getting the monogram 48th B-17G and seeing pics of Shep Paines crashed B-17 Diorama. About 90% of my builds are dio's, both aircrfat and armour. For me, getting the composition right is the key. But at times i like to go for an orientation thats out of the norm. A lot of people would have had the building behind the E-100 to give it a backdrop. But i made the front the narrow end so your looking down the barrel with the vehicle framing the figures.

It also leads people to look round into the back of the house.

Just play with your layout until your happy with it.

 

When the time comes I would love to pick your brian about dio's.

Great build subject. Your work on the armor and the blownout factory are solid. Beautiful job sir. Did you cast the factory from a lite plastor or foam? The detail is outstanding.

blackdog, when i did the E-100 last year, i was just learning as i went along with the building. But i was happy with it so i'll try and go into more detail on the progress on this one. Most of the comments i have had on that build have been about the building and rubble.hopefulkly ican carry it on with this one.

And ye, i like the early war stuff as well. I think it tends to get over looked, i know i do.

I only had problems with future a couple of times and i know that was user error. Which is why i can't figure out whats going on here, not 3 kits in a row. And each time i have been getting more careful about applying the Alclad. And it only happens in small areas.

Hi bish looks like I have missed  this 1 everything looks great.

Im planing somthing like this for my stug4 build. Nothing at this lvl though. Im sure to learn somthing here. Thank for sharing pluss i really enjoy the early war panzers. 

Bish: Great job there on the panzer and figures but I really love the building. I too think the brickwork came out really well.

Sucks about the gloss finish. Funny, I've used several glosses and never had issues with any of them, it's the final matte coat that gave me fits. Until I started using the Alclad product from the same line as the one that is acting up on you.

Wondering if the 3 kits had anything in common? I've haven't used alcad but have found on a few kits that I too have had adhesion problems in small areas that I figured to be problems in the plastic itself.

 

Not that i can figure. One was Tamiya, one Trumpeter and this one Dragon. All painted with Xtracolour enamels. 2 in the 3 colour scheme and this in grey.

Funny thing is, the first time i used it, on an Italeri kit, it was fine. But the 3 since i have had problems. And on this one, it happened on one of the side bins, which is PE.

But after what you have just said, it has me woundering if its down to my handling. I don't wear gloves when i model, i am woundering if the Alclad is reacting to somthing from my fingurs left on small spots of the model after painting. My next armour build won't be until the start of next yera, but i wil make a note of that and be sure to wear clean gloves when handling, see what happens.

The building looks great Bish. I like to use unscented crushed kitty litter for rubble. What will you be using?

 

Thanks PJ. I'll use unpainted celluclay as the core of the rubble and then add bricks and various bits of debry along with brick and cement dust. Being only my second building dio.i'l be taking what i did on the E-100 dio and trying to improve on that.
