and we had M-219s and even some M-73 COAX. if you got one to shoot well you just passed it from tank to tank during gunnery.

 

I trained on the M1IP in AOB, but went to a unit in Germany that still had the M60A3TTS. I had no experience on that tank or with its fire control system, but enough was similar to the CEV and M48A5 that I was able to figure it out and shoot superior my first gunnery a month after I got into Germany.

Even in December 1987, there were still soldiers in the unit that had served on the M60A2 when the battalion was still 3/68 Armor.

It looks kind of black here, my lighting and camera I think. The color is Rustoleum camo green.

I think I'm going to do the four color MERDC....  Academy had a pretty good four plan view in the instructions, and I'm told that the additional colors could be brushed on, good for me since that's how I'll be doing it.

It is actually four colors.  The main two, dominant ones (Forest Green and Field Drab) were sprayed, with smaller squiggles of the sand and black done by hand.

Gino, where did that diagram come from? I need to print that and keep it next to me......  large enough for my old eyes to be able to see it, lol.

Edit: Well heck, it's also in the Academy instructions, big enough to see.

We try to do it over on "Ships".

Because the FSM search window doesn't go back into, well much.

That's a first coat, gotta check for any visible brush strokes, clean that up, then clear flat and a VERY thin reapplication of camo colors.

Hmm, really, three would be ideal.  One in OD, masked up and chalked for outlines.

A second with the two main colors sprayed on (it would be the hardest, too, as replicating bad solider over-spray and under-spray is complicated on a model).

The third could be getting the w & b brushed in.

And, each could be detailed that least bit individually--trim vane hanging straight down; folded, extended, and so on; with & w/o rubber skirts, and so forth.

Tracks & road wheels might still be stained with red mud, to give a connection for a unit rotating back to The World.

Not that I'm an enabler giving you an excuse to build three models instead of just one, or anything, I promise . . .

The painting diagram I used is off the IPMS website or magazine from about 13 years ago, and the intro page is a line drawing of two guys with brushes adding colors.....

We need a MERDC group build. Weren't the Poles even using something akin to MERDC Pawel? I know the ROC and South Koreans were using something very similar.

 

 

Sounds like a great idea! I'd thought about a M48/M60 or another Cold War Armour GB. Way too busy now but if someone throws one next year I'm in. 

Rob - that's a very cool idea - also because there is such a big variety of machines that can be modelled...

Most people would say the Polish post war machines were mostly single-colour green. This is also because all the period photographs are black and white and this doesn't show camo well... But there are instructions for multi coloured camo schemes and the thing about them is in winter they prescribe painting some colours out with others - making this similar to MERDEC. Also the method with chalking the outlines out and then painting is mentioned there. But the shapes of the colour spots are different - tha camo is supposed to be painted in "rings" or "islands"... If you like I could post some scans.
