Painting Gun Barrels

Hi guys,

Have just got back into the hobby during the last 6 months after 10 years away. Been reading these forums for a while now but for most part have been just lurking in the shadows.

My question is this. How do you folks go about painting gun barrels (machine guns, flak guns etc?) to get the most realistic finish?

Do I just use straight gun metal paint? Or is there another way to get a better finish?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I use "gunmetal" for a base and then drybrush with a "steel" color.
Most any gunmetal will work fine and do a few light drybrushes because (I think) this an easy technique to overdo.

Similar to Derek's technique I use either gun metal or a dark blue/black. I wash with black to "outline" detail. Then highlight by dry brushing with silver.

You could also rub in some graphite from a pencil to get a metallic effect

hi ,i use humbrol metal cote, when the paint is dry you can buff it to macke it shine i you want to.

I'll first paint a thinned layer of matt black, then cover it with a layer of gun metal(i prefer the Tamiya X-10 or a mixture of Humbol gun metal+matt black), then I use Q-tip lightly 'dry-tap' steel color on to the edges & corner on the receiver and barrel.

I am always amazed at the help people on here are willing to give. In my opinion the internet is the biggest thing to happen to modeling.

When I was last in the hobby 10 years ago I didn't have such resources to draw from.
