Tiger I Painting
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, July 4, 2004 11:10 AM
I just finnished building my Tiger I and want to paint it that yellow-kakhi that you see on many of the tanks. Does anyone know what Tamiya color I should use or any other type of paint?

Hmm I guess you are talking about the Panzer Dunkelgelb that the Tigers was painted with. The RAL nr. is 7028. You can get it from Xtracolor nr. X805 Dunkelbelb. and also from Testor Model Master nr. 2095 Panzer Dunkelgelb 1943. And from Vallejo nr. 116 Dark Yellow.

Xtracolor and Testor is enamels, and Vallejo is an acrylic. The Xtracolor and the Testor color are identical and need to be lightened before use to get the scale effect. The Vallejo is already lightened and can be used straight from the bottle.

Seems to me that somewhere over on 'Missing-Lynx' I read something to the effect that there is no existing Dark-yellow paint chip that has survived from WWII until now. The point being that, as far as I know, whatever shade of dark-yellow that any modeler uses is educated guess-work. So in one since make yourself happy!

I have sprayed dark-yellow on several armor pieces using Tamiya acrylics. For my taste I have generally lightened up the dark-yellow with white.

Md..take a page from 53. The XF 60 is a good choice...Ive used black as under coat (pre shading) Staight from the jar for the first coat, and added a little white for the 'cloud pattern' (if your'e using the technique). Like 53 said , it's up to you. Try daylight or craft globes in your desk lamp. Since iv'e used them- colours are easier to obtain from references you may have.Don't go over board with any washes like i did.Best of luck

Washes, drybrushing, sealer coats, etc all change the initial colour anyway.

I spray XF64 red brown as a primer coat, then XF60 as a misted coat. Works for me.
