Help yw18mc finish model update
Posted by yw18mc on Thursday, July 15, 2004 9:06 PM
Just got back from short vacation, couldn't wait too get back on my little project. I posted an earlier set of pics showing my basic "OOB" DemagD7 with Flak38 tracked vehicle. this is Italeri kit. I cammo'd the kit and submitted feedback from you guys to finish this kit. first suggestion was give complete kit a wash. I completed the wash with a mix of raw umber and thinner over most of the vehicle. that is what you will see in the pics I'm posting today, as well as orginal pics. you should be able to see some more contrast now. my next step will be to drybrush the entire vehicle as suggested by you all. I will post pics when that phase is completed. all feedback good or bad welcome. the following links will give you a picture of the progress. thanks for the tips, I believe this could become a nice model with your help. semper fi, mike http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0101Image0006.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0101Image0005.jpg these are the before wash pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0715Image0001.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0715Image0002.jpg these are after the wash http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0101Image0004.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0715Image0003.jpg these are before and after from a different angle. semper fi, mike

Please excuse my typing and setup on the computer. I'm still very new to this machine and haven't learned much about set up yet.

That's looking good so far Mike. Do some dry brushing to bring out the detail and if you have any pastels, you could use some to add some dust. Keep up the good work and let us see the progress!

Coming along beautifully Mike. Can't wait to see the drybrushing.
Exactly what do you consider a vacation when you live in Hawaii? I always thought of it as a chore to go back to the mainland.

Looks great! I agree with the pastel/dust as a finishing touch. I use both pastel chalk and MMP weathering powders, a great combo to provide an old/new dust effect. Excellent job!

Looking good Mike! The wash has given it some depth, and the drybrush will complete the effect. As the others have said, pastels are great for some dust.

Keep us posted.

Very nice. That wash really makes a world of difference. The next natural step after a wash is a drybrush, and you'll notice it's this step that will really bring the model to life. I just finished my Demag not too long ago, and it is a very nice little kit. I did mine in overall Panzer gray, so the techniques are a little different, but principle is the same. After the wash, maybe some rusting and dusting will do. Smile [:)]

Looking good!

Did you catch that bare plastic on the front left inner road wheels (track section) that I pointed out last thread? Looks like I can still see it in the top pic here!

J-HULK, was hopping you wouldn't catch that little bit of bare plastic but thats why I've got you guys on the payroll."LOL". I actually have a couple of spots that need to be hit before I start the dry brushing. sometimes you don't catch the defects until after you've posted your pics, and then blow them up up, and lol and behold all kinds of things pop out at ya. I'd like to start my dry brushing today beings I've got all my honeydos done but, I'd like to get some input from you guys on drybrushing. I've done a little in the past but I'd really like to step up a notch. any pointers will be appreciated. semper fi, mike

J-Hulk's eagle eye misses nothing! Heh heh!

I know what you mean about seeing boo-boos in pix. That's actually a pretty good way to critique your own work, I reckon. The camera's eye gives you a different perspective on your work than your own eyes can.

Keep us posted with your progress!

KennethC, thanks for the compliment! you asked about the kit! It is the Italeri Demag D7 with Flak 38 of course it's 1/35 I couldn't possibly work anything smaller. the kit was a nice kit to build especially if you are fairly new to building individual treads. the entire chassis assembly can be added to the main frame after the wheels and treads are built up. I like that concept it allows you just a bit more space to work with and detail all your running gear, and believe me I need all the help I can get when it comes to building individual treads. I now have a fixture I've built to help in assembling treads! in fact I think you gave me the idea back some time ago. I need to spend some time in the techniques forum to get up to speed on drybrushing thats where I'm at right now. Ishould have a updated pic in a day or two. I tryed doing a little drybrushing today but I'm afraid I'm not to happy with the results. back to school!! back to the techniques forum, semper fi, mike Oh, read your piece on the carpet monster!! there evil! thats why I now have hardwood floors and tile throughout the house, it helps, but stuff still likes to disappear.

This is the third installment of three series of pics showing Italeri Demag D7 with Flak38 these three pics illustrate the application of some light drybrushing, and the attempted use of some pastels, oversprayed with a coat of dullecoat. I'm not sure I want to take this project much further! it seems my subject may be getting a bit too dark? your coments welcome. please see links below.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0717Image0005.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0717Image0006.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/yw18mc/2004_0717Image0007.jpg I'm sure Dwight will be along too post my pics direct so you don't have to click on the links. I'm still having learning problems with posting pics direct too my thread. seems even with the I get the big red "X" anyhow let me know what you think! I'm open to all suggestions. semper fi, mike

Here you go.

This is how you post pics, No spaces though. And when you put the URL in the middle, make sure there are no spaces next to the [img]. You'll get the hang of it.
As for the Demag, Looks great! I think you are finished. But that is just me. I think earlier you said this kit had easy indy tracks. I havent built iny tracks yet, so do you think this woud be a good kit to start with?

thanks.
P.S. Keep up te good work.

Eric, (TIGERMAN) hey guy, thanks for popping up so soon!! as you probably know by now, I just about go crazy getting these links posted correctly. got alot of learning to go thru still with regard to getting my point across on the computer. Seriously though, don't you think maybe I've taken this project about too it's limit? I'd be open too maybe trying to do a little mud work, but not to much. I can take constructive criticism, I've got pretty thick skin. let me have it!! "aaaaaugh", did I say that? semper fi, mike John, (REBLELREENACTOR). looks like you beat Dwight to the draw, thanks buddy. it's hard for us old dogs to keep up with you young pups. John, in my opinion this would be a good kit to start individual tread construction on. be sure to clean up your treads real good before trying to assemble them. Kennethc, gave me a good idea about putting two pieces of wood side by side the width of the tread teeth and gluing the two pieces of wood down to a board. then you can glue four or five treads together at a time let them set for about 20min. and do another 4 or 5. it worked for me.

Mike, at this time I don't like muddy kits, I prefer them weathered, but more pronounced. Mudding them up in a non diorama situation, just isn't my cup of tea. To me, your build is about the way I'd finish one. I've just kind of recently gotten into more weathered looks.

Thats good enough for me TIGERMAN I'l just do a little detail work here and there, and see about ripping open a new kit and getting lost in it. take it easy. semper fi, mike

Whoa, I'm just one opinion, but thanks the same. Wink [;)] What's your next build going to be? Hopefully I can use you as an inspiration to get a build on the shelf. Cheers.

Well , I got a challenger I that i've got too finish. was thinking about getting back on it. I've done the basic paint and camo. Now I've got too give some thought to a wash and some detail work. Most of my work has been pretty much out of the box stuff, and as you've seen fairly clean from a painted standpoint. It's time to start giving them a bit more character. ok I told you whats next "ERIC" so let's get to work buddy. catch ya later.

Okay Mike. I probably will get back to work on my Marder this Monday. Maybe I can get some paint on this week. I was recovering from my vacation all week and dealing with some unexpected problems.
