I'm intending to put in some serious time on this over the weekend. Just got word that I will be travelling to Fiji for work middle of next week which means that I will be gone for at least one if not two weekends. Will post updated pics of the next phases before I leave for sure. Big Smile [:D]

Thanks J-Hulk! I'm pretty much decided on leaving the crew out...there's so much detail on the guns, the ammo racks, and turret interior that they obscure that the tradeoff in terms of what the figures add doesn't seem worth it to me. The close confines are realistic without them and the figures would emphasize that, but at too high a cost. Will definitely keep them in the spares bin, never know when a donor might be needed for another project down the road.

Looking good!
I like the camo.

Good luck cramming the crew in there!

That's the beauty of the art of scale modelling...you can basically do whatever you want to! Be sure to post pics of the finished winterization, if the figures are any comparison, it ought to be awesome. Thumbs Up [tup]

well I said German Grey and thats a whole different color but very close to Panzer Grey though but of course it would be interesting to see what a WirbleWind would look in a German Grey base coat though :)

Whitewash is on my list of things to try, been thinking of several different possibilities, but haven't settled on one just yet.

One note on the historical timeperiod for the Wirbelwind, it didn't go into production until late 1944 and would not have been painted in the panzer grey scheme but would have a dark yellow basecoat with any camo or whitewash field applied. It was built on refurbished Pz IV G and later chassis from what I understand, so any with a grey scheme would have been repainted at the factory after conversion. Not many of them were built, about 80 units I think before war's end...

well wbill just wait till I do my WirbelWind I'm going to do a German Grey paint scheme with a white wash to simulate winter camoflage similar to my 20mm gun mount cant do the same to my MobelWagen since the gun crew is molded in the regular uniform and I did a good job on those guys cant wait to add them to my MobelWagen (I'll do that in German Grey as well)

mikey,

Very nice job with the figures and the quad 20mm. For a moment there I thought the pics were of a real crew in action!

tiger,

The rifle is an 8mm Mauser Czech BRNO Vz24 with the straight bolt. I picked it up at a Big 5 Sporting Goods as an after Turkey Day sale for $80! Was in very good condition, have taken it out and fired it once just to see how it handled. It has an elevation site up to 1 km and is very accurate for an open sight. The bayonet was an extra from an online surplus vendor. Near as I can tell it is a captured Romanian as the crest and most of the markings had been sanded off. It's a nice display item/piece of history to compliment the office.

Nice looking builds to go with that case Bill. What kind of rifle is hanging on the wall behind you?

Phroosh,

That's kind of why I was leaning towards leaving them out. The interior with the seats and ammo racks shows how cramped it really was and I'm thinking the figures would detract from the detail rather than add to it.

It's going into a wall case, which means it won't be easily seen from the top anyway, but is also destined once completed for inclusion in a local model contest/exhibition, so it's a tossup.

Here's the case (and because of the mirror background, me) in the office/workbench area. It will go in on the lower level next to the Hummel.

Excellent progress there wbill. Makes me want to break mine out.....

My two cents on the figures is that Tamiya's AA figures have been seen a million times; perhaps just modify one to go in there fixing something etc, just for scale purposes. Helps to show how big the vehicle was, and how tight the turret was!

Keep up the good work, and keep showing the pics!

It's meant for a wall case that I have. Indy cases aren't particularly cost effective, both in terms of $$ and space available for display.

what display case are you using if it is a single vehicle case you can easily make it into a Diorama for the WirbelWind and have the model protected at the same time

mikey,

I may still be able to put the figures in, have to see if it's worth the effort or not...the quad 20mm isn't secured into the turret and can still be removed as needed since it was easier to do that for painting than to try and mask it off. Still a tight fit. I'm not a huge fan of figures for static models unless they are in a diorama and this particular kit is destined for a display case. Jury is still out though...

wbill76,

you were actually supposed to put the two loader figures in before you assembled the turret.

Thanks for the comments and feedback so far! Will post pics as the kit progresses, although it's mostly a weekends-only type of effort.

After some examination, I'm not sure if I can even get the figures to fit correctly in the turret without some major surgery/adjustment. Tamiya chose an odd way to mold the figures and they don't have a lot of options for posing as a result. The confines are awfully tight and I already had to leave out a toolbox type thingy that was supposed to go near the gunner's seat...Disapprove [V]

Mikeym,

Haven't gotten that far yet...the kit came with a complete gun crew, haven't built them yet. May include them, may leave them out. Big Smile [:D]
