Challenging the treadheads... The Mad Fokker Day..!
Posted by djmodels1999 on Thursday, August 5, 2004 11:50 AM
You may have heard that on 8 August, several members of this Forum will be attempting to build a Tiger in a day. A fantastic idea, and I may even join them in their quest for success!

This give me the idea of another one-day Group Build, this time with an aircraft kit that is at the same time easy and cheap to find, easy to build, even possibly easy to paint. Also it is one of the most famous aircraft ever. I'm talking about Revell's diminutive 1/72 Fokker Dr.1...

I can hear you from over here: What?? An aircraft??!

Well, this IS the challenge isnt'it? Stop trembling, I can assure it can be done, even if there's no way to conceal mistakes under tarps, mud and dust..! Evil [}:)]

It can be done in a day. Even a triplane, yes! There's very little rigging involved with this design, and some of the colour schemes are dead easy (overall while, overall black, ...). Also, it's a great intro into WWI modeling!

There are two kits of the famed triplane by Revell, one that dates from.. a long time ago, and one that was released only a year ago, and which, I can assure you, is a little gem. Of course, other 1/72 Dr.1 are eligible, those of ESCI, and Eduard for instance...

I'm proposing that we build this little beauty on Sunday 17th of October 2004, to 'coincide' with the 87th (!) anniversary of the aircraft operational debut in 1917.

And by mid-October, everyone should have been able to locate the kit and, why not, done some research into more elaborate paint schemes...

So, who's in it?

Domi

I love WW I aircraft, but I'll sit this out. I will be checking it out though. I still have to do a WW II aircraft for the backwards build. Heaven help me. Big Smile [:D]

i did not mean to start that, if i did.
:-)
let's see, 10 cm is . . . .
just under 4". eeek!

but you say there were some easy paint schemes? . . .
what's that? a worm sitting on a hook? i like worms! . . .

let's see, the 17th of October, the day after the Stug GB ends.
so i should be abt 75% done w/ the Stug by then . . .
and i think my girlfriend said the CCI at Fair Hill is that weekend . . .
hmmm . . .
we shall see . . .

Do they make a nodekker? I can deal with a fueselage. Perhaps two other Fokkers could carry it on a line or something.

Ausf,

Fokker was the inventor - you know "Gaylord Fokker" ( but his friends never used his full name )

Just reminds me of Deniro's like from 'Meet the Parents' when he asks Ben Stiller. "oh yeah, can you milk me Fokker?"

Build22, DO believe me here when I tell you the Eindekker is WAY more complicated a model than the Driedekker of the same company! Just look at all the rigging over and under the wings and those spoked wheels... The Dr.1 only has visible rigging between the wheel struts... 2 simple pieces of strtched sprue, and that's it. Of course, one can always add the end of the cables connectiong the pilot's controls to the fin and and tailplane (8 more small pieces of sprue). You'd have those on the Eindekker anyway!

Once we've all completed the Triplane, we'll go into more complicated things..!

By the way, I'll always deny that I chose the Fokker because I saw that Robert de Niro film the night before doing the suggestion...

Yeah, you got it - that's where I was headed
( that was the funniest line of that movie )

The real Fokker was Herman Gerard Fokker

Domi,

I'll take your word for it. You would know better than I . I am kinda partial to WW 1 aircraft ( Don't tell anyone but I have an Eduard pro-fi pak for the Albatros D V and a Glencoe Albatros D III hidden under the bed )

The one and only. Season Tickets in the family since '56. Can't say I wish your team good luck, sorry.Wink [;)]
For you, TO or not, no back no corners.
'Boys are done without Quincy no matter how bad he was.
Gibbs is who worries me this year.

Sorry if it's a little harsh, I still get a knot in my stomach thinking of Randall running around back there (and the occassional Bobby Clarke nightmare).

djmodels, yeah why not i guess ill join in, haha its sure to be a disastor, but what the hell why not, ill do a Revell 1/72 kit.

ausf- you got to be kidding me, cmon now the birds will be just fine there still the favorite in NFC East. Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard proved themselves last year that they can get the job done, the defensive line is healthier and now they have Kearse and Trotter and Jones, The new Wide Reciever rule will allow for more seperation, TO will demand double coverage, and give Pinkston more of a chance, Westbrook and Buckhalter are proven back, and mcnabb speaks for himself, Warner is injury plagued and a head case, Manning is young and unproven, you have a weak offensive line like last year, and Tiki is a known fumbler. The giants are still a couple years away. at least thats my thought.

Jim,
I didn't even get the name reference, I haven't seen the movie in a long time. The title hit me when I first saw it. It's funny though, 'Gaylord Fokker' seemed oddly familiar, but about 95% of my life seems oddly familiar.Wink [;)]

You're right, that's the best line I heard Deniro utter besides, "you talkin to me?"

Armorchris,
TO's gonna fall on a sharpie, out for the season...
You cut the only guy McNabb could find.
Your backs are retreads...
Trotter can't live up to the cash...
Barrow is going to bring doen the LBs..Smile [:)]

The Freak and McNabb can't do it alone.

As for the jints:
Yeah, Warner's going to break his finger on a lineman's helmut just before he suffers his career ending concussion, all on the first play from scrimmage.

Bright spot...A well rested Ron Dayne is going to rush for 1500 before the playoffs!

Now that you know I've lost my mind....
I guess we start a NFC East thread once the season starts?
