Tiger I Mid Production In Progress..
Posted by Moses on Monday, August 9, 2004 9:40 PM
These are some pics of my Tiger I Mid Pro. This kit was started way back in the Tiger I Build Group, but I could not finish becuase of the birth of my daughter (which isn't a bad thing). This kit has sat for about a year and has been knocked around and banged up so some detail has broken off. I decided to paint it as is just to get back in the swing of things with the airbrush. I am still working on the ModelKasten Tracks, as well as working on the Stug F in the build group. Hopefully I will get them on before my daughter turns 2 years old Tongue [:P].

The kit is from Tamiya and I used the etched set from Eduard. It is painted in Tamiya Acylics, with filters and washes with Winsor Newton Oils (Mars Black, Burnt Sienna, and Raw Umber). I am still in the process of drybrushing and I use Oils exclusively for them. I will be using a combination of Migs Pigments and MMP Powders for the dust accumulation.

The kit was Zimmed using Tamiya's Polyester Putty and #7 Zim Tool. The Manlet was Zimmed using the #5.

Any commenst or suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers

Mo

Just a work of art Rob. Gonna be awesome when finished. Did you use stencils for the numbers on the zim?

Thanks Tigerman, I used Archers Dryprints. When doing the dryprints on Zim, you need to first burnish it as much as you can, then go over it with Micro Set to allow it to settle in the zim. I usually do 3 passes of it allowing it to dry in between for a few minutes. This is my feeble attempt at the Whitman Tiger I, pre blowup of course Tongue [:P]

Moses,
That is a Fantastic build!!!!!!.. The zimmerit looks 5 times better than anything I could have done..
My only question I have is about the number 007.. Is this Wittmann's Tiger??
The reason I ask is, that the current info on Michael's Tiger was that it was a late, not a mid production vehicle..
Don't take this as a flame, I am not trying to start a heated discussion, I am just pointing out a known fact.. And if you're okay with this or this wasn't your intent, you have built a Tiger to be proud of , you can always go for the Spring '44 version which is accurate.. (007 was a mid-production Tiger until sometime in late-spring, summer of 44', when it was replaced by a late version Tiger, and that was the one Wittmann died in August)

Well actually to be totally honest, I needed Dry Prints for it and the only ones I had were of the 007 Tongue [:P] So I said what the heck, a pre blown up Whitman Tiger I. But in all seriousness, I really appreciate the commenst Panther18 and I honestly went by some pics of the his Tiger I, one of the reasons I left off the gun block on the rear. But I am not one for historical accuracy. Again thanks for the kind words bud.

Wbill..thanks a bunch bud, I suffer from a severe case of ADD and can not focus on just one kit. I really hope I complete it and fix the errors in the comming weeks.

Cheers

That is one beautiful build! Outstanding Zim. Thanks for the pics, Inspiring.

007 wasn't Wittmann's Tiger by the way, he was using it that day because it's commander fell ill.

Looks like you have not lost a step during your hiatus. A great paint job!! I cant wait to see the finished pics.

Just curious about one thing… Do you paint the tools before, or after you glue them to the model, because the tool brackets really have crisp contrast and they look great.

Thanks for the kind words guys, much appreciated. I could have actually put a little more effort in build. The paint job is going well and hopefully I can get it done in the coming weeks.

Edog, I paint everything on the model. The only parts that are painted off the model are the road wheels and tracks.

Stunning! Exceptional work Moses, you give me something to aspire to.

One day I will make a model that I want to photograph that well. Brilliant detail.

Moses,
great work!
i cannot figure out how you can paint all the tools & stuff on the model
w/o getting 'shadows' of unpainted plastic from the 3D tools.
or how you can paint a jack or C-hook w/o getting the metal color on the Zim

good to see you getting back to the bench & the forum.
we missed you!

Thanks guys. J-Hulk it is great to be back in the swing of things. My wife tells me I am less cranky, but I do not think she realizes that she just isn't seeing me as much now Wink [;)]

Tigerman, I use a piece of .05 plastic card cut in small pieces and put it under the tools to paint. That way if you slip, the brush hits the plastic and not the model.

Hey Moses,

Outstanding work as usual. Somehow though you manage to out do yourself each time!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. There is alot of things I could have done with the kit but didn't. I only went with a little Photoetched and i am glad I did. Becuase everything probably would have been knocked off in the time it sat all that time. The tool clamp broke on the rear of the kit and I said..."ahh who cares!! It's fun just to paint again"

I am looking to super detail a Late Tiger I after the Stug Build. Maybe I'll do some Zim again Tongue [:P]

Thanks again for taking the time to post and the comments.

Ya it is a simple trick and saves alot of hassle wildwill. I do it for all on board tools and tow cables.

That is a really nifty idea Moses. Something as simple as slipping a thin sheet underneath and voila! That's one of the things I love about this forum, great bits of knowledge floating around for the taking. Wink [;)]

That zimmerit is fantastic. I also did the mid-production Tiger a while back, but I couldn't get the putty method to work. I scrapped it and used resin replacement parts by....the company escapes me. Blame it on the fumes.

Hey J, once you find the best technique for you when it comes to Zim, the rest is easy. Some still swear by Milliput, and I rather pull my toenails out then use it for Zim. Resin Zim is fine and looks great, especially Cavaliers products. But I find it more rewarding to Zim the model yourself. This Tiger I took about hour and a half toatal modelling time to Zim. That is inclusing mixing the putty, cleaning the tool in between and masking.
