Check out some of the details, there is a scratch built Tiger in wood, some unbelieveable 1/444 scales and other insanities.

... from using the term "japs" in your context. This is a pretty international site and although the term was used extensively, the derogatory and racial tone of it has never ended.

Yes guys , PLEASE refrain from using that term. I ain't asking ya to be super-goody-two-shoes PC freaks, but that term oversteps the bounds of civility. It offends people. People like me.Angry [:(!]

This is actually my modeling club, guys! These are my friends you're using that racist term about.

Anyway, you can see my M-47 "KingTiger" on page 4 of that link.
These guys are all extraordinary modelers, and great people.

The 17th conference will be held Sept, 7th, and we'll be posting more amazing pictures from that show. I'll let ya'll now when they're up.

Now, post nice, you guys!

I didn't mean it at all to offend. I have a hard time spelling Japanese and I'd get flamed for the typo (I'm certain of it) so I just shortened it.

No offense meant.

FWIW, I'm a Dane (aka Roundhead) myself, and I don't see the derogatory in it, or in the stereotype language, because I never identify myself with such stereotype, I was just meaning to show all the crazy things that club has done in the name of modeling.

Hi, AD!Smile [:)]

I didn't really think you personally meant to offend anybody, it's just that this particular term does carry some very negative connotations, and can be highly offensive to some people.

Perhaps I'm more sensitive to it because my life is here in Japan, most of my friends are Japanese, and the woman I am going to marry is Japanese.

That term doesn't faze me at all when I hear it in movies (heck, even cartoons!) of the period, because that was acceptable language during the conditions that existed then, and I am no historical revisionist.

But it really does put a spike in my heart when I hear it used in the modern vernacular, whether it is used with malice or not.

I've never heard the term "roundhead," so I have no idea what connotations or meaning that may have for Danes.

I'm American, but certainly, "yankee" doesn't bother me at all! I don't even get upset when, upon hearing I'm from Georgia, someone calls me a "redneck!"

I guess it just depends on a person's individual level of sensitivity, or knowledge of the background of a particular word.

Anyway, I understand your position, AD! "Japanese" ain't that easy to spell, that's for sure!Dead [xx(]

And by the way, you are absolutely right: those guys ARE crazy!!Tongue [:P] Absolutely insane modelers!
And they can drink beer like nobody's business! Big Smile [:D]

Now, let's build some models!Smile [:)]

What can you tell me about the term Nipponese J-Hulk? I've heard that and Nips used as well, I always assumed the latter would be offensive to some, but never knew for sure. Can you give me the skinny on the term Nipponese in general? I have no background on that one whatsoever, but never really had anyone to ask. Sorry if I've written an offensive term there, I'm just a bit hungry for information. I'm really a big fan of the Japanese culture and history actually.

Howdy, Madda!Smile [:)]

Thanks for asking! I think we can all learn a lot about and from other cultures, to make us better people.

Nipponese is fine, the same as Japanese. Nippon is another way to say Japan, and is used in situations of a more international or official nature, such as government offices and international businesses. Some examples: All Nippon Airways and Nippon Telecom. Politicians always say Nippon when giving speaches.
Normal people rarely use "Nippon" or "Nipponese."

When I ask my friends why there are two words, the most common response is that Nippon has a harder, stronger sound than Japan, and projects an image of prestige and power.

"Nip," short for Nipponese, is right up there with "Jap" in the offensive slur category, but not quite as bad. I would never use either one.

So, there ya go!Big Smile [:D]

I really appreciate you asking!Smile [:)]

Anytime anybody has any questions concerning Japan, feel free to ask me. Of course I don't know everything, but I've been here for ten years, and what I don't know, I can sure find out! Big Smile [:D]

I'm not accusing anyone of being racist, but spelling Japanese is hard? COME ON! Sad [:(]

"What hath a man profited if he should spell his contraction for "Japanese" correctly but incur the wrath of his fellow forum members?" So sayeth the good book, or at least the King James version of the Rules of Forum etiquette.

The Japanese and we have been on the same side now for nearly 60 years. It's not a question of being politically correct--we just want to be polite and respectful to our friends.

I've edited this thread's subject line with a heavy hand, as well as one or two of the posts with in it. Most of the responses are constructive, so I'm not going to delete the thread. Looks like the appropriate apologies have been made; we all say things we wish we hadn't, so let's be glad for what we've learned and move on.

BTW, the website the original post links to shows some mind-bogglingly well-done models!

Hello, Mr. Hansen!

I appreciate the edit.
Sorry if I over-reacted with my replies, but it's something I feel very strongly about.
Anyway, no harm done! I realize there was nothing malicious about it at all. Smile [:)]

But, YES!
The modeling! These guys rock, and rock hard, my friends. Always willing to share their techniques, and always willing to give a person constructive criticism.

Just like all the fine folks here at FSM! Big Smile [:D]

I did not mean any derogitoy meaning by it to you but i was enraged because i had a family member that was killed in the japenese death march in ww2 and i realize that the us and japan are allies now and that thee are none or very few left that still have that kindof hate to americansand same with americans. So i apologize for my comment but a word has only the power you give it but if people said those kindof words all the time there would be no commen decency in the world.

No problem, modelkid! Big Smile [:D]

You'd all love these guys, I'm tellin' ya! An amazing passion for modeling. I'm the only non-Japanese guy in the group here in Osaka (a nice fella named Scott lives way out in Nara, so he doesn't count!), so when they're doing US figures, they always want a good look at my face in different lighting as a reference! Sometimes they even ask me to not shave for a coupla days to get that rough in-the-field look. These guys are serious! Tongue [:P]

If Pixilater is reading this thread, hey, I'm sure my buds would love to donate one of their Japanese faces for a digital comp pic if you promised to show them in a Zeke or Jack!
Man, they'd love that!Big Smile [:D]

Hi, Freefall!Smile [:)]
Well, there are some names like that that are fine, and obviously others that are not. That's why I think we all need to be sensitive to the issue, and make an effort to know the differences.Smile [:)]

I'm a Yank, and I work with many Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis, all terms that ,as far as I know, are not derogatory, and are actually more terms of endearment than anything else. Kisses [:X]Big Smile [:D]

Anyhooo, what did you think of the armor on the link?

I always wondered why it is that any American is called a yank in any other country, but in America, only people from the North of the country are called yanks, and then, only by people in the South. I always considered that a bit odd. For that matter, it's considered only somewhat derogatory, but not bad, nothing that would rate a punch in the nose or anything like that.

When I've been called a yank by people from other countries, it's never been the least bit insulting, at least I never took it that way, nor do I think it was meant that way. Is a derogatory term made that way by intent of the user, or by the perception of the recipient or some combination thereof? People are funny animals I think.

Yes, I doubt any of us Americans mind being referred to as Yanks, except Bostonians. Lol Evil [}:)] .Modelkid, I wanted to jump all over you for your earlier remarks, but after reading further posts, I understand you better now. I figured the hatred ran deep inside of you for some reason, but hopefully some 60 plus years can help heal the pain. I'm sorry of your loss. Hopefully you can look to our future with Japan and realize our differences are in the past and we are now Allies. Same goes for the Germans.

Hi, folks!

Modelkid, they are dedicated, that's for sure!Smile [:)]
The LVT4 by Mr. Miike is indeed scratchbuilt (edit: mostly scratchbuilt, with the Cromwell kit as a base!). There's a great pictorial of this build in Armour Modelling 4 or 5 issues back. The tracks were outrageous! 5 or 6 pieces per link this guy scratchbuilt![:0] Mr. Miike has the reputation of being one of the most insane scratchbuilders in the club.

Jkeller, there are TONS of great shops in Tokyo, but up where you're going to be, I don't know of any offhand. But geez, there's a Tamiya shop on almost every street corner, so I'm sure there's something up Furukawa way! I'll check my sources and see what I can find for you.

Madda and tiger, yup, people sure are funny animals!
I think we're all cool about this now, so let's just keep on enjoying each other's fine company, and keep the model talk flowing!Big Smile [:D]
