I did not mean any derogitoy meaning by it to you but i was enraged because i had a family member that was killed in the japenese death march in ww2 and i realize that the us and japan are allies now and that thee are none or very few left that still have that kindof hate to americansand same with americans. So i apologize for my comment but a word has only the power you give it but if people said those kindof words all the time there would be no commen decency in the world.

The modeling! These guys rock, and rock hard, my friends. Always willing to share their techniques, and always willing to give a person constructive criticism.

The Japanese and we have been on the same side now for nearly 60 years. It's not a question of being politically correct--we just want to be polite and respectful to our friends.

I've edited this thread's subject line with a heavy hand, as well as one or two of the posts with in it. Most of the responses are constructive, so I'm not going to delete the thread. Looks like the appropriate apologies have been made; we all say things we wish we hadn't, so let's be glad for what we've learned and move on.

BTW, the website the original post links to shows some mind-bogglingly well-done models!

Thanks for asking! I think we can all learn a lot about and from other cultures, to make us better people.

Nipponese is fine, the same as Japanese. Nippon is another way to say Japan, and is used in situations of a more international or official nature, such as government offices and international businesses. Some examples: All Nippon Airways and Nippon Telecom. Politicians always say Nippon when giving speaches.
Normal people rarely use "Nippon" or "Nipponese."

When I ask my friends why there are two words, the most common response is that Nippon has a harder, stronger sound than Japan, and projects an image of prestige and power.

"Nip," short for Nipponese, is right up there with "Jap" in the offensive slur category, but not quite as bad. I would never use either one.

What can you tell me about the term Nipponese J-Hulk? I've heard that and Nips used as well, I always assumed the latter would be offensive to some, but never knew for sure. Can you give me the skinny on the term Nipponese in general? I have no background on that one whatsoever, but never really had anyone to ask. Sorry if I've written an offensive term there, I'm just a bit hungry for information. I'm really a big fan of the Japanese culture and history actually.

I didn't really think you personally meant to offend anybody, it's just that this particular term does carry some very negative connotations, and can be highly offensive to some people.

Perhaps I'm more sensitive to it because my life is here in Japan, most of my friends are Japanese, and the woman I am going to marry is Japanese.

That term doesn't faze me at all when I hear it in movies (heck, even cartoons!) of the period, because that was acceptable language during the conditions that existed then, and I am no historical revisionist.

But it really does put a spike in my heart when I hear it used in the modern vernacular, whether it is used with malice or not.

I've never heard the term "roundhead," so I have no idea what connotations or meaning that may have for Danes.

I'm American, but certainly, "yankee" doesn't bother me at all! I don't even get upset when, upon hearing I'm from Georgia, someone calls me a "redneck!"

I guess it just depends on a person's individual level of sensitivity, or knowledge of the background of a particular word.

Anyway, I understand your position, AD! "Japanese" ain't that easy to spell, that's for sure!

And by the way, you are absolutely right: those guys ARE crazy!! Absolutely insane modelers!
And they can drink beer like nobody's business!

I didn't mean it at all to offend. I have a hard time spelling Japanese and I'd get flamed for the typo (I'm certain of it) so I just shortened it.

No offense meant.

FWIW, I'm a Dane (aka Roundhead) myself, and I don't see the derogatory in it, or in the stereotype language, because I never identify myself with such stereotype, I was just meaning to show all the crazy things that club has done in the name of modeling.

Yes guys , PLEASE refrain from using that term. I ain't asking ya to be super-goody-two-shoes PC freaks, but that term oversteps the bounds of civility. It offends people. People like me.
