Moser Karl Geraet Initial Version on Railway Carrier for $60!!!!
Posted by dzhou on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 2:10 AM

HeHe.....Don't try to buy it in the U.S. I'm currently working for an extended period in China and bought this for a HUGE discount in a model shop in Shanghai (normal price was 650RMB or around $81!). Yes, its the exact same Trumpter kit! I'm currently about 1/3 done (one railway truck finished along with the carrying arms, bottom hull with the complex running gear done except painting [wheels and arms not glued in. will not until final painting done. tracks not assembled on] and the mortar itself with its massive carriage done. Railbed and of course, upper hull not done yet).

Overall an excellent kit. No pitfalls I can see although there are MANY small parts. The long bar that holds the return strollers will definitly drive some people crazy! The bottom has a row of small eye hooks that's SMALL!!!!! Ohh becarefull assembling the railway trucks though. There are some areas where you wanna test the fit first and watch out if you don't read the intruction carefully! HAHA!!!!! Tongue [:P]. I should know since I did the Trumpter's massive K5E Leopold in the U.S. and the Railroad trucks almost drove me nuts!

One question though, anyone who did any of the Leopold Kit (Dragon or Trump), this or any other Karl kit or for that matter any railroad models, can anyone tell me what colors you use for the railroad bed rocks? I travel alot on trains in China and the railroad bed rocks are usually a light tan to grey color with a bit of red. But the pic I keep on seeing are usually very dark grey or even black. I'm comflicted. My Leopold rail bed is still isn't done because I'm so conflicted! Black Eye [B)] Half of the rail track I keep on seeing are rusted almost seems to be unusable! But by traveling on trains in China, I keep on seeing rail tracks that's not nearly as dirty or rusted! So I'll probably lay off the heavy wheathering on the rails! But still, what to do with the bedrocks........Question [?]

Ohh yea, I've been hanging off this forums for quiet awhile now but too ashamed to post because I don't think I can compete with you guys here......I'm a serious modeler but not that serious if you catch my drift hehe Smile [:)]. But that bed rock question have me stomped and I need help!!!!!

Ohh a little about myself! Been modeling since age 13. Quiet abit now because of job and college etc(Final Fantasy Xi....or two years of my life down the drain lol). But now starting to get back to it.

P.S. Ohh, yea. After I get the thing done, it's a question of getting the thing back to the U.S.! Don't worry, I'll find a way! HEHE!!!!

This kit usually costs $80-$100 in Bangkok, depending on where you buy it - hobby shops or dept stores. But I got mine last week for just over $60 and now my modeler is working on it. Prior to this one, he's built the Leopold, the Morser Karl-Gerat (late version) on railway carrier and the BR-52. This is the color he used for the railroad bed rocks :

Anyway, some say that it's safe to paint them all black, except for the upper side of the rails which should be silver grey.

If you want to see the Leopold or the others I mentioned, try locating them from this menu :

Hey, welcome to the forum. Glad you're no longer lurking, and decided to post. You can google imagles of railroads. I think it all depends on the country or region of where the railway beds were built, and what materials were available.

Try to post some pics. I'll be building this beast in a few months as well, and so far I've only seen one built up example.

Thanks!

Well, I've decided to go for a less dark color bedrock for my Karl railroad bed.

I'll lay off the black and dark grey and probably go with mostly a wash of light grey, tan, flat earth and even desert yellow and flesh to see how it turns out. I know each region and country are different but of all the pictures I've seen and from riding trains in China, most of the rocks in rock bed are a much lighter tannish and greyish color rather than dark grey or black. Some of the pics I've seen of Leo and KArl had the bed rock almost coal black! I don't think trains ride on coals.

As for the wooden sleepers, I think I will go for a faded grey look. From observing wood that's placed outside for awhile. After standing in weather for awhile, they usually fade from a natural wood color to a greyish colorso that's probably what i will do.

the Rails themselves will be mostly gunmetal + black and a little of red brown on the side. Not too heavily rusted and with metallic grey and silver up top because of the fact that trains keep on running over them. I'll see how it goes. Hopefully it will turn out good. I will try to see if I can get some pics up here after it's done but I won't start painting the bed till I'm finished with the Karl and the railway carriers.

Ohh Zo. I can give you some pointers on the assembling of the kit. There isn't too much traps in the Kit. I don't know if you bought the initial version or the production version. But some of the rules aply except the running gear. You don't have to worry about traps but there are a few areas where you have to be ultra careful....Unless you like the idea of searching extra small parts on the floor or making a mess of the small parts hehe......

any actual war footage or color drawings of the real thing? Your pic is great and gave some ideas but I want some real pics just to make sure. It's ok if you can't find any. I'm pretty sure color pics of the real thing is hard to come by. Tongue [:P]

P.S. That looks like the Dragon Kit. The shell kinda sucks because of the lack of details. That's why I'm looking for some pics or drawings of the real thing because the Trump version is excellent!.
