e-100 vrs maus

How about this as a paint scheme for the e-100: WWI Lozenge pattern, after all, it was good enough for the planes...

There are a thousand space marine chapters, each of a thousand men (or more). They have shown paint schemes for about thirty of the chapters, forty tops. They actually encourage you to make up your own chapters and ther color schemes.

OTOH, I'd think that you would have to extrapolate some kind of latewar color scheme for the E-100 -- which it turns out you did, and quite a handsome job it is too. If you paint it purple, though, people might object. A purple land raider would be welcomes right into the fold in 40k!

Now that I think of it, they weren't even going to use the E's for combat though, were they? I thought they were test beds for AFV development, kinda like concept cars. Wasn't the Maus the one they were actually designing to roll into combat? Was there a special color scheme for development vehicles?

All this said, I actually built up the Dragon Maus, as my wife gave it to me for Christmas ("here's your Nazi tank, dear, to celebrate the Prince of Peace's birthday." ) I painted it in the standard dunkelgelb, but with big blobs of red-brown and olive-green. No ambush spots. A really fun kit, and, unlike many other kind of frustrating expeiences I had with DML, a fairly easy build-up too..

There's the key word: FUN!

Yeah, the imagination part of it is why it took me 5 months to finish my E-100. I have a notebook full of sketches, trying to come up with a camo pattern I liked. I finally went with my first impression, the gray Berlin Ambush! Then I did all the research I could on late war German armor, and tried to use my limited imagination to take it logically into 1946. Sure, it was fun, but it took a while!
And I ended up with a model that is plausible, while at the same time completely unique, and "all mine!" Now, if I only had the talent to scratchbuild the whole thing...

Nothing to be sorry about Bill ..... the Vc is an excellent build too.

It's just that the Ic is a little harder to get ahold of now.

Brian, the only problem with Wermach46 stuff is what you said about being limited only by my imagination. Sometimes I think that's a VERY short step!! LOL

I am meeting the guy with the models at the model club meeting tonight. I asked him to bring the E-100 and the Firefly. I'm excited about both of them. They will both be fun builds.

Eric/Tigerman, Eric/Erock mentioned the Otto Carius tank in the post above mine. I was just wondering what the difference in the kits is between the two mids, since the Otto Carius is considerably more than the regular mid. I think I read that the only difference is the sprue with the two new figures on it. If true, it seems like a lot for two 1/35 figures. (Maybe they had to pay Otto Carius royalties!! LOL)

Well, there really is no "wrong" or "right" at all, is there?

No such problem with a "what if" E-100!
The most guff you can get is "I don't think it would have been painted like that," to which you can simply reply, "well, I think it would have!"

Anyway, no rights and wrongs here, just do what ya like!
That Maus does sound interesting, Larry. Got that kit in the closet, waiting to take its place next to my E!

The downside of never really getting it wrong, though, is that you're also never really getting it right.

When I really want to build fantasy vehicles, I just go whole hog and build a Warhammer 40k Land Raider, or an Ork Trukk.

But seriously, ladies and gentlemen, I think it might be fun to build that Maus with the counterweight turret you see in the pictures. ADV/Azimut makes an aftermarket piece for it, or you can scratch one up. It saw service, in a manner of speaking! Apparently it actually worked decently well as a vehicle.

The best thing about the Maus or the E-100.. Since they weren't a production piece, you have all the artistic license you want, and everyone won't be critisizing you that your olive drab doesn't look right..
My saying is, "if you can't decide, go for the German ride".. I would go for the E100 myself (my .02)

Hey Bill, which Eric were you refering to awhile back about the Otto Carius Mid....? There are at least three of us that I know of. [:0] LOL I'm not sure I know the answer, because I don't have either kit, but I believe the Otto Carius Mid costs more. I'm sure I read something about that in an old thread. Glad to see your easily influenced by all of us. LOL

okay, in my never ending quest to please all of you guys, I think I'll get the E-100 and the Firefly, if I can still find them. (The Tiger tracks I was going to buy have evaporated!!! Now I can't find either the MK's or the Friul's! )

Well, myself I have both :) Just picked up the E-100 from E-bay 33$ that was with shipping. I enjoy building not your everyday kits, so the E-100 & Maus are the pick for me.

This is just me, but I would always go with the vehicle that was actually produced and had a solid combat record. This gives you more modeling possibilities and photographic sources to refer to.

An E-100 might be fun though if you want to build a diorama of that famous photo of the unfinished vehicle with the amused GI standing in it.

i hate it when your in a good model shop and your torn between two or three kits
i was in a good model shop last month when they had the E-100 and a AFV club Achillies, i wanted them both but couldnt make my self buy both, so it was one or the other
thinking of J Hulks E-100 i picked the E-100 and walked down to the the counter still thinking was i making the right choice
when the assistent went to serve me i turned and headed back to the Tanks and picked up Tamiyas Ardennes Kingtiger
im still after both kits

Bill, treat yourself to an early Christmas present and buy all three. If you don't do that, get the one your debating on the most, because if you don't, you'll regret it down the road. We've all been there.

I'm fairly fortunate that my wife doesn't really know how many or what kits I have, so when a new one shows up, she never really notices (or doesn't pay attention.)

You cuold also tell her the "Demon" made you do it!

Scott, where are you expecting all this joy to come from?? Certainly not my wife. I guess if I started selling off all my aircraft kits to buy armor, she might think that was okay!! LOL

Most women don't understand that whoever dies with the most unbuilt kits wins!! LOL

I know I can't get all three, but I might be able to swing two. Still gotta consider those Tiger tracks I need, though!

Bill, my advice would be to buy all three. Hey, I've seen some of you guys' closets!! Buy them all and then build whichever one you want first. I would if it
involved more than one kit that I wanted AND the fact that they are rare. Go ahead, indulge yourself. (If you don't, you'll probably kick yourself later when you can't find one or more of these kits.) Simple, pure logic.

The Maus (188 tons actual) was a bit bigger than the E-100 (150 tons projected). A complete Maus still exists at Kubinka, but the E-100 only got so far as a partially completed hull, which the British took possession of after the war, ran some tests on, and scrapped.

It wouldn't be too bad if these things weren't all oop, now. I can put off getting more Tigers, the Honey, Marder III, Nashorns, etc. Because I know they will be around for a while. But these three, who knows when I might get another chance!

Well, look at it this way: a heck of a lot more people have built perfect Fireflies than perfect Es! Or perfect Mauses (Maice?), for that matter!
