Wow! Thats a great looking hetzer! I have never liked that tank untill I saw yours, now I have to build one! Ive been away for about a week and a half now, so I didnt get a chance to comment on your tank, but it looks awesome. I really like how you were able to get the 'built up' look to your weathering, you can see dust, mud, then further down scratches and chips. Fantastic looking. Also the removable roof is great, you cant cover up that beautiful interior! All the detail is fantastic on that tank, great great job.
Thanks, MG42...I felt the same way; never liked the Hetzer--until now!Whistling [:-^]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I think there was something Fruedian in my building of this tank and all the detail I put into it! (Gosh, I wonder what I could do with an airplane?!?!??? )Shock [:O]Laugh [(-D]

Great looking Hetzer.

Now, to the category...It will be the head judge's call, but if that were me, I'd say this is NOT a diorama. There really is no story being told and the top has been removed and displayed separately (nice touch and technique with that.) Displaying it off the base with the top removed would look odd. There is an open top or with interior class listed on the flyer. That's where I'd place it and challenge it's being placed in the dio class. Any judge worth his salt is able to judge the model and not the "junk" next to it.

At the Nationals in VA Beach in 02, there was a Stug with 2 or 3 guys cranking the engine over and that remained in the regular armor category.

Sage advice, aj! I think I'll make an inquiry with the club before the contest; they meet at the LHS on thursdays. I'd like to display it AS IS, but I don't want to cause any rifts between myself and guys who might get irate that it beat their model just because it had an elaborate base...

Interesting about that StuG! Thanks for the advice and info!

I don't know too much about the categories for IPMS entries (it's been many years), but I personally think that it looks best on the base. If it were mine (if it were mine it wouldn't look nearly this good Thumbs Up [tup]) I'd enter it as a dio if I had to. Another thing to think about it the way you've got your mud and dirt blending so well with the weathering on the running gear. It's not something that just anyone can do, and it's not a given - so I'd want to show it off on the contest table.

One of my favorite Tamiya 1:35's that I saw people build was the Pak 37, which always seemed to be a deal where if you build a jewel, it outshines alot of other things.

I paint icons for a religious vocation. A good trick with the eyes is to do the cornea which is the whole deal you see inside the eyelids, in a lightened skin tone, do the iris in the color of the subject which in your case is blue as a dot that spans top to bottom but not side to side, and then put three white dots- one on each side of the iris and one in the middle. Its not right but it looks right.

Wow, this is really an overwhelming piece of work. There is so much to look at. Every single pic I looked at gave me an idea as to what to try on my own models. Definitely inspiring. I'm very curious and eager for you to release that painting and weathering document. It will be a pleasure to read, just as it was a pleasure to look at the finished work.

OK, wbill76....are ya out there?...I redid the antenna with another guitar string; now the diameters are the same! GOOD CALL!

You can definitely see the difference/similarity now! Big Smile [:D]Yeah!! [yeah]

I do agree the SS got hetzers ..it's  the early type I couldn't find any references too, the 8 SS got their Hetzers on the 29th of August 44.. There were 283 built before that date ..but if you say so ...I can live with that..Make a Toast [#toast]

As for the roof I get the point ..thats cool with me .

Your interior looks awesome as well ..a build to be proud of sir !

Hey Doog ..this has got to be one of the nicest Hetzers I've seen ...Love the heavy weathering you've done a great job ...I did notice 2 things and in no way do they take away from the awesome build ,but I thought you'd like to know .. I built this kit a few years ago and during my research I could not find one early hetzer that was delivered to an SS unit, I mention that because the figure is dressed in an SS camo uniform ...the second is if you plan on leaving the roof off like that ..shouldn't the bolts be removed from around the edges? Just something to think about..

Like I said this is the best hetzer I've seen so far and congrats all around.

Rick

Thanks for the reply and opinion, Rich...the SS camo uniform is correct. The 8th SS Cavalry Division "Florian Geyer" was issued a small number of Hetzers in September of '44. In all, a total of 10 SS mostly-pzgrenadier divisions were issued with up to 200 Hetzers til the end of the war.

I deliberately left the markings vague, as I figured that a radio command vehicle might not want to "advertise" itself; many photos I've seen of Hetzers are mostly devoid of markings beyond the Balkenkreuz.

Your observation of the roof being removed is well-considered, however I did not intend the seperation to be literal; I only have displayed it in this unusual way so as to show off the wealth of detailing in the interior--here's a few shots in case you missed that post:

I appreciate your input! And the compliment! Big Smile [:D]

Ian...you're making me nervous! Laugh [(-D] Actually, my girlfriend has a hundred different ways to say "doog"-some of which are entirely unsuited for this site! LOL!Laugh [(-D]

A Dunkelgelb debate thread you said you want?  Nah.  We need a thread discussing different ways to say Doog, Crocketts got a good start.

Very nice work all around doog, especially how it ties into the base. Usually the only time that figures at an IPMS event are allowed for a non-diorama is if they are crewing the vehicle and even then it's up for debate.

The only small (and I do mean small) thing that jumped out at me was the differences in the various radio antennae on the vehicle. The spare on the side is meant for the star antenna but the diameter is different, at least in the pics, vs. what's mounted? The left side antenna also appears to be unpainted/bare metal in the pics, not sure if that's intentional or not?

Once the vehicle is on the base, everything ties together very very well. If you do enter it for competition, enter it as a whole. Just my My 2 cents [2c]

Hmmm...very interesting point, wbill76; thank you for that info...yeah, I think I'm gonna have to live with that discrepancy. The mount for the aerial from Tasca is plastic, and already firmly glued to both the "star" and the base...removing it would ruin it. Hopefully the judges won't know that and will look at it as a spare for the other side antenna, which it matches exactly. Even if I could remove the star from the top of the post...wait a minute....an light bulb just went off somewhere!!!  Shock [:O]  I'll get back to you on this wbill76!!!!  Propeller [8-]

Back for more--I just love this thing!  One thing I noticed on the second pass---maybe it's intentional or a trick of the lighting/photography, but the Dunkelgelb looks very faded and not very yellowish.  It has a heavy "tan/sand" color to it.  Seems kinda of light and not too         yellow-eyish.  Just thought I'd send it out there as brain food.  Fantastic build.

...dunkelgelb is one of those colors that is as heavily debated (almost) as field-applied zimm...many folks think it was more of a "buff" color than a true "yellowish" color...I tend to agree with doog and lean towards the more "buffish" color, not only for historical reasons but for aesthetic reasons as well...most of the contemparary color pics I have seen seem to support this...cool thing is, that as the artists, we have some "artistic license" in that area to bring what is pleasing to the eye into it (within reason)...
