Army "Monster truck"
Posted by jeff on Sunday, October 21, 2007 11:41 AM

I had the good fortune today to visit the Marshall Museum in Overloon, Netherlands with my son.  Not a great deal of armor, but hundreds of other military vehicles, mostly US, and all in excellent condition.  Thought I'd share our favorite with you.  Unfortunately, I was a little rushed and didn't get its nomenclature, but I've never seen anything like it.  Sorry for the dark pics, my camera flash is weak -

My 6-yr old is standing in front for scale.  Under the body (hull?) in the second pic to the right of my son are the two tunnels for the propellers.  I think the placard said these things were from the 1960s and were used in Vietnam.  The open covers line both sides and house the engines.

Hey Jeff, I saw a picture of one of those a while ago too, and didn't dare ask what it was called, since I figured once I knew I would just HAVE to build one, and my guess is it's either not made in 1/35, or some incredibly pricy resin kit.  Any ways, I photoshoppped your picture a little bit, should be a bit easier to see now, hope you don't mind.

Yes, it is a LARC-60 (Lighter, Amphibious, Resupply, Cargo).  It was used by the US Army to transport troops, supplies, and equipment from ship to over the shore.

I was to Overloon in 2000 or so--that place rocked! Lots of cool things to see! From there I went up to Nimegen, and then up Hell's Highway to Arnhem Bridge and Oosterbeek. What a cool trip that was!

In Appledorn, the old Tiger-billeting area, there'a a big monkey-farm place where the monkeys run free. Weird. What does this have to do with modeling? Nothing! Just waxing nostalgic! Laugh [(-D]

If that is the "light" version, I'd hate to see the heavy one!

It is a Lighter, not light.  It comes from an old nautical term.

"A Lighter is a barge-type vessel used to carry cargo between shore and cargo ship. While the terms barge and lighter are used interchangeably, a barge usually refers to a vessel used for a long haul, while a lighter is used for a short haul."  Maritime Terms and Definitions

Arty;

Add to your definition that a lighter is usually self propelled while a barge isn't.

Gino,

I've learned to expect you to have a wealth of knowledge on just about anything with a set of tracks and a gun on it, but must you also have command of the nautical dictionary as well, jeesh. Wink [;)]

Yes, I possess a wealth of useless knowledge.  Just ask my wife and she will tell you all about it. Big Smile [:D]
