Panzer III Turret Plans online?
Posted by MrSquid2U on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 7:17 PM

Help!

I have a potential project for the bench IF I can come up with a Panzer III Ausf J-L turret? Not having any spares lying around I'm willing to attempt scratchbuilding one but lack a detailed drawing to do so or an existing turret to copy? This is just one of those 'spare parts and spare time' projects so I'm not wanting to wait to buy any more reference books and am instead hoping someone can point the direction to a nice weblink?

Thanks in advance!

It will make a difference between whether you do a J or an L. The L featured spaced armor on the mantle that changed the overall dimensions vs. the J. Depends I guess on whether you just want the turret or the whole shooting match with the gun mount?

I'd like the option of doing either? It seemed to me that apart from the added armor they were similar if not the same? Further- how does either compare to say a Panzer IV Ausf D or F- reason being I have samples of those and maybe I could 'correct' that to work for my Pzr III project?

Thanks for the response!

Pz IV and III turrets look similar but don't have the same dimensions. The Pz IV turret is wider at the front and, as a result, the taper angles to the sides and rear are different as well vs. the III turret. The turret ring diameter on the Pz III was smaller than that of the IV...which is why the III was ultimately rendered obsolete while the IV was able to be up-gunned.

I've got 1/35 plans for the J and L, let me scan those in for you.

Here you go...tried to keep the file size large enough to avoid distortion of the line drawings.

For discussion purposes only:

wbill,

MAN, that was more than I'd hoped for! Thank you very much and because of your extra effort there's gonna be one more project in the works!

Thanks again!

My pleasure, I'm sure you'll put them to good use. Wink [;)]
