A couple of M1114 questions

Here are some answers. 

1. did the M1114 have a wench under the rear bumper as well as the front bummper?

No, there is no winch under the rear bumper.

2. What is the interior color?

Usually the same as the exterior, sand, or medium green on camo vehicles.

3.Are the M1114's primed before they are paninted the sand color?  What color is the primer?, I would like this info for simulating paint chips and such.

Yes, the primer is either red oxide or flat black, depending on where they are manufactured.

4. About the gun mount on top, I have found that not all M1114's have armor plating on front, back and sides, all have atleast the front, but not sides and backs, does this have to do w/ production runs?  earlier models dont have a full armored gun mount, later ones do?

More a necessity due to the type of threats faced.  Early on, they were deployed w/out the armored gun station.  As the conflict progressed, more protection was added.

For a really nice conversion, MIG has an M1114 set that includes the armor for the gunner's hatch and a variety of weapons etc.  It is a really good kit and can come out really nice.

Actually most of the M1114' s have a winch under the back of the truck, I've only seen a few M1114's without a rear winch, and those were probably removed for repair and never replaced.  They are hard to see, they are mounted up under the Hummvee.  M1114's do not have a winch on the front bumper, there is a hole for one though.  All of the aftermarket bumpers for the front of the Hummvees have a hole too, but I have never seen a winch mounted there either. The rear winch is built with a roller fairlead to be able to run it under the Hummvee to the front and pull it that way if need be.

As for the gunner turret shields the are factory installed. While in Kosovo in 1999 we had M1114s that did not even have the front gun shield. So older M1114's may not have shields,  but I'm sure by now most older ones have the turret armor added.  While in Iraq, we had a M1114 made in 1994 that had the full turret shield, not sure when it was added but it looked just like the factory installed ones, so I assumed that it probably came as "kit" that was installed later.

We replaced alot of hoods and doors and deck lids while in Iraq.  All of the replacement  parts that came straight from the crate were painted in green CARC paint (not sure what the FS number is), underneath that was the gelcoat from the fiberglass or Kevlar parts, which was usually clear.  If (thats a big "if") the parts were ever painted the sand color, it was painted right over thre top of the green CARC paint. Multi-colored Hummvees were not uncommon on the roads of Iraq.

ya I saw that kit...but why spend that kind of $$ for something I can do my self, also I found this pic, maybe someone can clarify, this sure looks like a winch to me...

 There is a winch cable that is coming out form under the rear bumper...perhaps this was a field mod?

Sorry about the "multi-color."  I meant that Green and Tan body parts would be seen on the same truck,  mostly the hoods though, we went through alot of hoods, and we lost doors too, but not as frequently as hoods. 

As far as the weapon shield mount.  The shield mounts in between the base mount on the Hummvee and the mount that connects to the weapon.  Thats kinda confusing so here are some pics.

The lower green part of the mount is attached to the truck,directly above it is where the shield mounts to the rest of the gun mount,and then the actual weapon mount is above that.

One thing to remember is that the m1025/1026 turret and gun mount is different than the M1114 so you can't use the Tamiya weapons turret.

Really...I didnt know that the turret was different...hmmm...have any good pics of how it is laid out, kinda hard to tell how the resin piece looks for the MIG kit.

Here is a brand, spanking new M1114, right off the trailer. Even has the protective plastic seat covers still on it.

Actually, I don't recall seeing any 1114s with a tan interior. Not saying they don't exist, just we never got them!

With my first post I just wanted to say hello but I need to add some info to hunterw450's post.  Unless some of the newer models had a rear winch, none up to 2006 did.  here is my M1114 I commanded from 01/05 to 01/06:

Awesome truck, I completed thousands of miles running convoys all over southern Iraq.  I am hoping to find a nice sized scale to re-create my truck but no luck yet.  I hate tiny little models.  As for the interior, green all over.  In 06 we started getting all tan trucks but they were still green inside.  great, solid performer but I can assure you, the armor doesn't always work.  I have pics all around my truck for reference if anyone ever wants a look.

Chris thanks for the additional information, I am really looking for some good pics of the turret...would you happe to have any of that?, also what is that logo on the side you your ride? looks kinda cool.

I've got some others, I'll post them when I find them.  As for the logo...The Texas with the 7 is to honor one of our truck teams who was hit by an IED.  We lost two, kia and one injured.   Their truck was Guardian 7.  Mine was Guardian 12.  We were Texas Army National Guard, hence the Texas flag.  The Quadratec is a jeep 4x4 forum I belong to and my ID is Hitman.  Mt driver was from Oklahoma so I have his name and state in the driver side.   

Here is one of the damage from our destroyed truck, the rest I can't show.  The extra armor isn't as good as they said it was.

I'll look for some of the turret, I know I have a couple.

Thanks again for the pics and info, the turret pics are nice but they are like all the ones I already have.  What I really need is a birds-eye view of the turret, how it looks underneath the side-shielding, you follow what I am saying?

 And the way I understand it now is that winches are on the front of some and the back of some, just kinda depends....

Hey  Gents,

I have a ton of M1114 photos from Iraq if you'd like them. One must keep in mind that there are so many variations on the same theme, so many different combinations of add-on equipment it boggles the mind. My pics come from running theater convoy security between July 2006 to July 2007. My M1114 (NZ00XM) was a year old when I got it and it underwent three major upgrades while I had it. The M1114 was just starting to be replaced by M1151s and M1117s when I left. I spent the last 4 and a half months there TC-ing  an M1117 Guardian ASV.

One must keep in mind that every major unit configures their  M1114s a bit differently too.. based on mission. All ours were green inside and had the winch under the rear bumper. There were three different turrets in use, and we upgraded armor packages twice. Each time left the vehicle looking much different than before.  The pictures I have are mostly M1114s from 1/121 FA and Det3  1/221 CAV. These vehicles came from 2/127 IN who were their original owners. They ran convoy security from Camp Navistar Kuwait to all points in Iraq as far as Tal Afar. Nasiriyah, Diwaniyah, Baghdad, Taji, Balad, Ramadi, Fallujah, Al Asad, Tikrit, Mosul...these vehicles could be found in any of those places between 2006-2007 in the last two upgrade configurations.  The original M1114 upgrade version, as reproduced by the MIG kit, was very rare after October of 2006 except on Iraqi vehicles.

I'm pretty sure I have a bird's eye view looking down into the turret. As I say, there were three different types of turret and the last version was powered. The Mig turret is too tall, and the walls are too thin. Also there was a turret "floor" that the Mig version doesn't provide if I remember correctly. The Mig turret rounds the bottom of the turret walls at the front (near the gunshield) In real life, the top edges are rounded. Mig got it backwards. I used my Mig kit as a template to cut the turret walls out of sheet styrene.

Is there a special secret to posting images here? I can't seem to do it.

This is what I live about modeling HMMVW's is there are no so many variations between factory-built armor and field-fit stuff. I'm pretty sure I could start building more now and never get all of the variations finished by the time I kicked off.

The "turrets" on the M1114s keep evolving. I've seen some photos recently of gunner's positions that look more like aquariums with metal walls and ballistic-glass block windows.
