FINISHED PICS!! Field Kitchen snow scene

I love it Doog!! It's perfect. Even the expressions on their faces, the one looking at the bike is priceless, amazed and freezing at the same time.

hehe!  Seriously, thats amazing work doog!  Great scene overall, I love the way the snow looks on the ground, on the cart, cycle and horses and the muddy tracks!  It sure looks cold..brrrr!!  I know what you used for the snow, but what about for the base?  We need another TOOT!!!  You DID take WIP photos?

Nice build, love the horses. At first I though it was a waste of the motorcycle but it fits and lends a message.

Looking out the front window see this northeast snow storm and turning to this and the realism is excellent.

Outstanding work, Doog! Couldn't see... is that chair tied down at all? That's the only thing that jumped out at me. If it is, then my mistake.

Really like the frozen effect you've accomplished. Stark, bone-chilling. Horses are your best to date, that I've seen. I don't know who I feel sorrier for: Hanz and Franz, the horses, or the bike... but I know I don't want to be out there with any of them.

Yeah, I hated the thought of burying the bike, but I thought it was just such a neat juxtaposition between the old and the new, the reliablility of the "two horsepower" over the "two stroke"!

I'm happy to hear that you all thought it looked "cold"; I was really trying to convey that in the poses of the guys, and the kinda windblown look of the snow. Like I said, when I do the toot, I'll cover all that.

Yes, bufflehead; I did take a LOT of WIP photos! The base is polyeurathane foam, covered in Spackle and plaster. You'll see in the toot!

I actually did NOT document the building of the actual model itself--I kinda wanted a nice and easy build after the Brummbar, but I will say that the horses' harnesses are all made from super-thin plastic strips, cut with a single edge razor and a metal ruler--tedious work, but worth it. The horses were painted without the harnesses, and then the harnesses put onmostly with superglue. I didn't want then harnesses to look molded-on, so I painted them first, and then super-glued them so that they stand away from the horses a bit. 

Likewise, the reins are long thin plastic strips--to "sag" them, I used a liberal coating of Tenax R7--the most potent glue I know of, and just patiently molded them as they rehardened.Another PITA, but again, the only way to get the look I wanted...

As I told you then, when I looked at the bike, I saw them and they just screamed "DOOG". Glad to see the bike came in handy. Being an OD guy I would not have done a German bike justice even buried in the snow.

Wow!  Really top notch Doog.  The horses are very well done; nice attention to detail.  The deep snow is convincing and I love the abandoned bike.  Nice work all around.

My only suggestion would be to maybe cover the vertical edges with some styrene sheet.  Would cover the rough edges of the foam and give it a more finished look.

doog:  Another masterpiece!!!, I really admire your willingness to try a variety of builds.  A few things really jump out as exceptional:  The snow that the horses have "trudged" through, the reins and chains, the guys' hats...particulaly the "wool" and as always the work on the figures' faces.  Most people overlook the yellow grass in the snow...nice touch.  You may want to add a few blades to the cart wheels too.  I plan to try to use planting polyurathane for a "mud bog", that toot' would come in handy.  Are you familar electric-heated styrofoam cutters?...not applicable here of course, but FYI for the future maybe...

If you love painting horses so much, how about building the Anheiser Busch Clydesdales and Cart!?, I know there is a kit out there...I saw it on a vendor's table...

Thanks Tigerman! I really couldn't see building this kit and just leaving it standing free; if you remember my "Midieval Tournament" dio that I built for Jenn, I have a "thing" for putting bikes and horses together. Maybe it has something to do subconsciously with my band?

Thanks to, Manny! Well, I guess it's a "diorama" then! I didn't really see a story at first, but I guess it does have one, albeit understated and sort of ambiguous? How was that cup o' chocolate?

dostacos, this is the old kit; the same as I've always known--I didn't even know that there was a kit without horses? What they give you in the kit is two horses, and a piece of thin plastic, about 5" by 3", and a diagram to cut into various "A", "B ","C' lengths of various lengths and thicknesses. YOu have to cut it and apply according to a diagram. I cut them out with a single-edged razor blade and a steel ruler. I screwed up a bunch of them; it's a real tedious process--it took me three patient sessions to get the harnesses all done--I couldn't do it all at once! If you really want the old directions, send me a PM with your address! And thanks for the "stars" rating, BTW!

pordoi--thanks also, for the nice "rating"! That's a good suggestion about the sides, unfortunately, at this point, I don't think I could get the sides covered with anything that would "stick"--the sides are both Spackling compound and white glue, painted over. The bottom is not "flush" to a 90 degree angle in spots, so if I put any plastic sheeting against them, they would lay funny, ya know? But thanks for the suggestion--something to consider for the "next one"!

 subfixer--yeah, their hands ARE kinda big, aren't they? Hmmm. I'l have to think about the "gloves" aspect--I'm a little hesitant to do it though, cuz in all the shots I've seen, I rarely see actual gloves for the most part, and if you remember the accounts of the battles around Moscow, so many thousands didn't have even so much as an extra pair of socks, much less hats and gloves. I figured the hats were maybe comandeered from some peasants, but gloves seemed to be in shorter supply? I want to show that, even in such obviously frigid weather, these poor guys had to endure the old summer uniforms. But thanks for the suggestion! 

SMJ, thanks too! I'm happy that you noticed the grass in the snow--I thought that up, and wondered if anyone would notice the detail? I mixed some blades into the snow, and even though they're not all individually peeking through the snow, the color of them on the top of the snow seems to give the impression...I was surprised and mor ethan a little relieved that it appears that way. Thanks for your nice complments! Hmmm...a beer cart? Cool! Maybe I could have it towing a "puppchen" or something! LOL!

Only a guy who lives in snow country can really get the feel of snow. You nailed it. I really like this. The only thing I'd do differently would be to cover their hands, even if it looked likie old socks or rags.

Yeah, Tamiya recently re-issued this kit w/o the horse but with some cool figs...not sure why they decided to forego the horses (probably cause most folks tended to model the kitchen as set up)...finding the "old" kit is hard these days and may even be a collector's item...

Hey, thanks ajfleche! There's certainly enough snow on the ground up here to make a comparison!

Interesting idea for the rags/socks...that might have been a possibility...wish I had that idea when I was building it!
