Daihatsu Copen with Custom Retractable Roof
Posted by Gaijin Modeler on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 4:21 AM

I recently build the Aoshima kit of a Daihatsu Copen. This is a car that is mostly sold in Asia and parts of Europe. Its a small 660c intercooled turbo sports car with a retractable hardtop. I made it to look like my own ride (I live in Japan), check out the photos below. I modified the kit which normally has a on or off top so that it now includes a custom retractable top. I also used real auto paint and urethane sealer, and created a custom decal to match my own license plates. Let me know what you think!

The build looks really nice, and the detailing and paint are spot on. I really love the personalized license plate and the animation for the retractable top. Just great!

That looks just great especially with the automatic top! I've recently obtained the sport version which is more of a rally/race car. But that does not include any form of roof!

Thanks guys for the nice comments! Since this real car is my other hobby, it was great to be able to use it as a reference for creating this model. Basically the truck had to be cut out carefully using an etching saw. The roof (which had to be ordered seperatly from a different kit becuase my kit also does not come with it) had to be cut into two pieces using an etching saw. The trunk hinges were all self fabricated using flat plastic pieces. Epoxy putty helped fix them to the inside fender. The hinges on the trunk were made using small pins and cut to length after a dab of CA glue on the opposite side. As for the roof, the main thing was making sure the hinged points were correct so it would fold in correctly. The bracket holding the two parts together was made from wire. Because the kit does not intend for the user to remove the trunk lid, I had to use the dremmel to sand out the inside trunk area to make the top fit inside.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I'd be glad to answer.
