1975 Chevrolet Camaro
Posted by Dubau on Saturday, July 31, 2010 2:37 PM

I am starting my next build of a 1975 Camaro that was my 1st car.

DAM I loved that car.

This is going to be a OOB build. I am not going to put in extras.

I am not or ever was a " car guy " as in fixing them.... So I have to start asking things now, In this photo is the engine and on the top there are 2 covers. I remember the engine being Chev Orange what I wanted to know are the top covers are orange too ?

Well I got my 1st thing that ant right on this 35 year old kit. The tires are hard as a rock and the rims are not the ones I want to use.

Going to have to look on the net to see if I can find some others.

If the valve covers on the engine represent the stamped steel ones that came on most Camaro V-8's then yes, it's supposed to be Chevrolet Orange.  If they represent the finned aluminum valve covers found on some of the up-level trim and equipment packages (Z28, RS), then they will be aluminum-colored.

The transmission and bell housing will be aluminum-colored.

Cool, thanks for the info. I am going to go with the Chevrolet Orange for the covers and engine.

Dry fitting and cleaning up parts. Still waiting on some paint to get in.

I don't know how car models are these days but a 35 year old kit and not much with the wheel wells and the engine

Well I don't plan to display it with the hood off, so I am not going to be bothered with a lot of extra's in the engine.

OK for all you car guys out there. The windows....... when you put windows in, do you cut them so you don't see the " Tree " on the inside roof. You can see what I meen in the pics.

And there is a small crack on the bottom of the front window, how do I get rid of that?

Thanks again all

Hey Bud, Use Future floor polish. Get a glass container enough to fit the clear part or you can even cut them apart they will fit better anyway. Dip the part in and hold it on a angle so the Future runs to the corner that way you don't have a blob on the end.Cool

Bud, I don't bother cutting out the "tree", but I suppose one could. Be REAL careful, though, clear styrene is really fragile, as evidenced by the already existing crack.

Oldsalty's suggestion about Future (now known as Pledge with Future Shine) is a good one. It probably won't eliminate the entire crack, but it will fill in the gaps and minimize it.

So long folks!

Thanks guys

Super duper awesome cool!

My second car was a 77' Camaro that looks like Frankenstein when I bought it! The interior was out of a Z-28, every body panel was a different color, the motor a 305 cu in. A 4 speed manual transmission w/ Hurst shifter was a nice touch. The Z-28 had a history then was totaled, hence the parts from it to the 77' When taken for a test drive there was a terrible shake from the rear end, turned out the left drive shaft was bent! Bought a parts car for 100$ and changed that out.

Painted the car plum craze purple, turned out great but never fully cured as no hardener was used! Sprayed outdoors in poor light, mosquitoes were preserved in their last moments in the clear coat!

Paid 1500$ for the car + a rusty 68' GMC truck as partial trade + 100$ for the parts car. Paint and materials probably brought the cost to 2500$. Sold it to a shady dude I worked pipeline with for 3500$, ran into him years later & he said the car was pawned before he served some jail time. His story was after his release the pawn shop would not honor the deal so he torched the car....

I often wondered if the story was true, I had a lot of heart & soul in the car. I am sure the car was seen in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan years later. Frankencamaro lives!

*Back in 94' I had 'film' pictures, I will dig them up one day & post a few on this thread.

Frankencamaro, now that's FUNNY!

That's one heck of a story. Yes post some pics.......

Yea I miss my Camaro a LOT these days. My father got the car in 75' NEW and I got it 81' when I turned 16 and I am 45 now and would love to go back to the good old days. BUT that's not going to happen any time soon. So I found this kit 5 years ago and WOW it's bring back a LOT of memory's as I build it.

OK more updates.......

Here is my 1st coat of Maroon. I thougth it would be a little darker, but it still looks good. I want to spray it one more time.

The Alclad II Chrome is COOL to work with. This was my 1st time tring it and it turned out DAM GOOD, if I may say so Whistling

OK that's it for now. Thanks for looking.

Dubau,

The Camaro rims look real! (well other than the plastic mounting peg on the upper left one)

Metallic paints have a translucence quality to them by design. (color & metallic flake suspended in gloss clear.) Any body work or filler must be primed to even out the canvas, the overall effect depends on the base coat under the metallic paint. For lighter shades flat white is needed, the darker ones could go with gray and in your case red oxide primer would have set off the metallic maroon. Primer should be wet sanded before color to remove imperfections & and fish eye.

All good, take the time for it to full cure (1 week) and wet sand (1500 grit) it lightly before shooting the next coat . Repeat and then a few layers of gloss clear, repeat the wet sanding and the final layer use polishing compounds compatible for the paint (have a practice scrap painted the same process) Finally a quality automotive wax will give the car a winning finish!

1/2 a dozen to a dozen fun, easy steps to a show room finish on your auto. It all depends how far you want your Camaro to go.

Well I did not think it would look like a metallic maroon. Don't know where the metallic came from. Oooo well, she still looks good.

Thanks for the info you posted. I don't know how far I will go but I know I will do a wet sand and a re paint and a clear coat.

Yea been working on it on and off.

I got 8 more days to get this done so I can take it to the model show / contest here in  town.

Here are some more pics I took today.......

I redid the bumbers and they turned out good.

Here is the last coat of paint for the body. Now just have to work on the silver trim around the windows. Don't know if I will try to paint them or use bare metal foil.

Now for the dash, Hmmmmmm this is going to be a hard one.  Anyone have any idea's on what I should do about this. I tried dry brushing and I ended up re painting it D'oh.
