Grant King Sprint Car
Posted by vetteman42 on Sunday, September 11, 2011 2:58 PM

This is my very first ever sprint car build, I wanted to learn mostly how they go together and where I would have troubles with them. Its a 1/24 AMT kit and did have its own trouble spots. I am happy with it for the reasons I wanted to build this kit. I did discover a few tricks to get rid of the shiny chrome looks of the plated parts, I have not seen much if any chrome on a sprint car. Chrome don't get ya home ya know. Anyway comments and suggestions are more than welcome as I plan to pay much more attention to the detail on the next one I build.

Early sprint cars used a lot of chrome.  The GK car was during the transitional period.  Many cars of that era did use chromed parts, others were going to powder coating on those parts.  For instance, the Edmunds modified that Monogram repopped awhile ago was from an earlier era and would have used a lot of chrome, so the chrome in the kit is proper. Bumpers and radius rods were the common parts chromed in earlier era, powder coated today and from the 70s.

If the chrome represents chromed steel, the modern appearance is powder coating, so the parts need to be primed and painted. I find metallic gray or charcoal is an appropriate color.  Those Platinum colors are, also.

On the other hand, some parts in sprint car/midget/Indy car kits represent polished cast aluminum.  Some owners did polish these parts, but most did not, so I spray them with Dullcoat.

If you are interested in open wheel race cars, be sure to try one of the new Revell KK midget kits.  These are super kits.

Yours is a very nice build.  Looks very good.

Man...a very clean build vetteman. The shot of the car from behind really shows off the "SET" of the car.

Thank you guys, like I said this was my very first sprint car build and I mostly wanted to experiment and see how they go together. I do have another one in the closet to be build, this one I plan to get crazy with as far as detailing goes. Its a 1/24 Monogram kit.

Don I was going by memory about the chrome on this sprint and the cars I watched at Ascot Park here in SoCal. I honestly don't remember seeing much chrome on the sprints or midgets there going all the way back to 1972. I could very well be wrong and will look for pictures of the vintage cars in the future. Thank you sir for pointing that out to me. I have been eyeing the Revell KK Midget Big Smile I hear that Revell is coming out with a reissue of one of their 1/24 sprint cars should be out about now too. Sure dont see many built these days

My thing has always been motorcycles, airplanes, and sprint cars.

Again thank you for your kind words and help

I have also heard the rumor of another re-issue of the sprint car.  I am building my second midget.  This kit is fantastic.  I am building the Offy version now- previously built the Ford version.  The only serious flaw is the omission of the nerf bars on the rear radius rods.  The color callout for the engine colors could be a little more detailed, but that is a very minor flaw. I took pics of the engine build and may post here later on better colors (the block/head assembly should be steel/iron rather than aluminum color, but very little of that area shows, most covered by aluminum access panels.  Anyway, super kit.  Anyone who enjoys building their sprint cars will love building this new midget. It is NOT a re-release nor update of the old 1:20 scale midgets, it is completely new tooling with super fine casting detail.

Vetteman42,

the Monogram?Revell winged sprint kits are great. They can be a little tricky, ecspecially attaching all of the suspension arms. Also, the Jacobs Ladder is very easily installed upside down.

If your into these "newer" winged cars, i would recommend checking out this site: scalesprints.com

There are a few older midgets there but mostly the newer winged and non-winged(USAC) cars.

Robert I have a Monogram kit I plan to start soon Jac Haudenchilds #22 Penzoil car. I dont really care for the wing cars and am going to build it as an older Gambler chassis with out the down tubes. I am still looking for an older vintage gambler hood for it and some old style tires like these.

Yes I did find scalesprints.com and joined them, have you checked out dirtmodeler.com ? Another great site I found.

Did you see some of the photo etched sets at Dirtmodeler? Engine plates and seats, incredible!

What markings are going on the non winger? Is the "old style Gambler hood" one that came in any of the older original Monogram releases? If so, I'm sure I've got an extra one laying around that you can have.

Angrydawg yes I have a bunch of Dirtmodelers photo etch, and let me tell you, the quality of them is second to none and its all made to fit the 1/24 Monogram/ Revell models too. There are also a number of guys there scratch building chassis from both plastic and brass.

As far as markings I am not sure really, I would like to do one that used to run at Ascot park. The JFK car, maybe the Tamale Wagon, maybe even Eddie Wirths 77 car.  I cant answer your question about the older kits having the old style hood. Most I have seen on ebay are the 1988 vintage and are all world of outlaws cars with the newer hood. I have heard Revell is releasing another one around the end of this month.

If you do have one laying around I am sure we can work something out, I can dig up a picture of the one I am looking for if that will help.

If its the hood I'm thinking about, I've got 4or 5 extras laying around.

robert

p.s.  If your looking to buy any kits, I've got a bunch listed on my photobucket page.  http://s870.photobucket.com/albums/ab267/AngryDawg/?themeSaved=2152923

There are a couple sprints listed in "box" #9, if your looking for any more.

Don after seeing your KK mdiget builds I am looking into getting at least one to build myself. Your fine work and high praise of the kits has convinced me,. I only hope mine turn out half as well as yours did.

Angrydawg this is the best picture I have of the hood style I am looking for, its Eddie Wirth's #19  car he raced at Ascot Park.

I am interested in one of your models too PM inbound

There have been a number of releases of that kit, with about three different hood styles. One was pretty close to what you need, maybe replacing the injector box with a scratch version of correct shape.  I believe it was the earliest version that had that hood.

Vetteman,

there is a fellow on Evil-bay that sells resin hoods that might be close. He's also on scalesprints.com. Believe its something like "jlstew" from Oklahoma.
