AMT 1991 Silverado 454 SS

This is a classic truck? Wow, the style looks new to me. This is what happens as we get older, Joe. And I don't mean you.

I wouldn't consider it classic, that would be reserved for anything up to the mid 70s, but it's not modern either. Looking forward to it Joe. Ya gonna build it stock? I dare ya!

It was like a re-awakening of the "ol' brutus" style of performance with a big block and all since all the performance cars of the era all had small blocks.

Just cracked into the box yesterday morning and started sorting parts.....starting with the engine. Really looking forward to building this truck and will try to add as much detail as possible and will be going for an O.E.M look. I might do a Day 2 build and add some wheels and tires but that'll be about all.

I'm at no shortage for a reference because I actually own a 1994 Silverado Extended Cab truck. Late last year I got the hankerin' to yank the 350 and replace it with a warmed over 383 (that still utilizes TBI injection but with Vortec heads) with a freshened up 4L60E, 2000 rpm stall converter and 3:90 gears. It's alot of fun.

I'm looking forward to this one Joe. Ought to be a sweet one for sure. I am thrilled to finally see some pics of your truck. BOSS!!!! 

I imagine that 383 with the rear gearing roasts a lot of tires!

The 454 @ 225 HP ... - but a nice 385 torque was a burn-out special as well.  My 65 mustang 289 GT had 225 HP.  I'm guessing some thoughtful mods on that 454 would get it up in the serious horsepower range.

I envy you guys who can do stuff like put a new engine in a vehicle. My dad was able to do that sort of thing. Dunno what happened to me except I got the lazy genes from somewhere else in the family tree.

I had a fold-out poster of a black 91 454 SS over my bed when I was in high school.  They had a red option and a white option in 91 but nothing looked as good as vivid black!

Ok folks....update time.
This kit has a pretty decent engine with lots of parts. The chrome parts all got stripped to include the rocker covers but other than that it's a pretty complete and detailed engine.



And here we are with the assembled base engine and transmission. Believe it or not....this IS some big time progress for me. I spend a lot of time in research and trying to get the details and colors down.

Oh, Gee Christmas is commin' and Joe is doin' the "build 'em like you wished you could of had 'em" treatment to a ChevyTruck !  What to do?  watch or shop or shop while I watch the cell phone  or....

That is a terrific looking start Joe. I have to say that that kit engine is one of the better looking ones you've had to work with OOB. Did you create that textured look on the engine? If so, how did you do it? Looking for that next update to come along.

Thanks fellas! I ran into a little bump with the build but I'm already past it. I initially was going to use the cool 90 degree spark plug wire boots that I acquired but after tireless attempts at trying to make them work at the distributor connection I had to scrap them and do the plug wires the way that I normally do them. It's not accurate but maybe the air cleaner will hide some of that. Anyways I should have some updates within the coming days.

Ok folks. I've been on and off at the bench for the last few months so progress has been pretty thin as of late. The bench time will become less frequent during the month of January due to my sons FFA show for a week in mid January. It's gonna be a crazy week with lots of preparation for the show in the days before it so I'll be trying to get what I can in on this bad boy before that.

As for now I've got more done on the engine. The air cleaner is merely resting on top of the throttle body in this picture. I be lowering it somewhat as it sits way too high. I'll also be adding some fuel lines to the back of the throttle body, some throttle linkage and will be installing an ignition coil. For such a detailed engine I'm not sure why that part wasn't included in the kit.

You've got it all going on brother. Stellar detailing as usual. It'll look all that and a bag of chips when you get the last bits on.

I've been working on the chassis as time allows for the last couple of weeks. Having acquired this kit on Ebay, it was missing one of the front molded coil springs. After looking at the one remaining spring and noting how horrible it looked, I thought it best to up the ante a little bit and make it a little bit more realistic looking. I opted for a set of steel coils that I had in the parts bin. Other than that it has been a rather labor intense seam and injector pin mark clean up. I shot almost all of the chassis parts in a coat of semi gloss black lacquer followed up by a thin shot of semi gloss acrylic paint which resulted in a more life like color to me. Not completed by any means but I thought I'd show a shot of progress to let you all know that I am in fact alive, well and building.

and for all of you who are curious....this will be my only modification to this build. I have too much love for this truck in stock form to do anything else to it. Still have some clean up left on the rear tires to get totally rid of the raised white lettering and then matching both sets of tires up color wise but here's what we're going with.

Engine looks much better.
