This looks really good. If I recall the SOHC valve covers were made out of magnesium and not alluminum, so they would be a darker tone like you have here. Well done.

After looking at the pictures this morning before heading to work and not being able to correct them then, I've since repositioned the L/H cylinder head into the proper position by sliding it forward to cover the timing cover the way it should and have given all the raised aluminum/ magnesium fins the proper treatment....
Hey Joe, I'm thinkin' that your stance is muy supremo. Those wheels are the choice nuts and will look all boss and such. The engine work so far is primo.
I do believe that this is going to be my favorite ride you've built to date.

Thanks for that Joe. Hopefully I can get the header to frame clearance figured out after I fabricate some new engine mounts for it.
A little more progress as of late. Been working on this thing all week long. Starting to get googly eyed.... Got a few more bits on. Oil filter, starter, bellhousing and transmission have all been painted up and installed. Working on the intake area of the build now which is where all the details are going to be. Stuff like ignition wiring, throttle linkage, fuel lines and all the mumbo jumbo stuff that goes in there....All test fitted together with a set of carbs that I have in the stash. Proper Dominators will go on top when I get 'em in the mail....and for test fitting the engine into the frame to check out header options, header to frame clearances and general fit..... so I don't damage or mess up any of the details that I'm building here I've got another 427 that came in a glue bomb Maverick that I got in the mail that's undergoing a restoration/ transformation.
Ya Know!
I always liked the Dyno Don Setup. But, I had hoped for and never have seen the Maverick Ltd type four door body style. My Demo was a four door with the LTD package. Nice little car for what it was. Definitely better fit and finish that the base Maverick for sure!
The neatest( Cutest) one on the lot was a two door in Grabber Graphics, in what I would call Electric Green! Sold four in one month and one was actually a Grabber, but, with the six with a three on the tree!
Your engine is certainly looking choice my friend. Can't wait to see it when it is all decked out.
T.B: Never seen six cylinder Grabber before. I have seen the green ones that you speak of though. 'Preciate you stoppin' in.
Joe: Thanks for your comments as well potna.
Mustang,
That's a very nice Cammer you've got there. Think you might have it done in time for the Nationals in San Marcos this summer?
Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.
Thanks lewbud. I'm fully planning on making that show and I 'm hoping to have this one finished in time for it, yes sir.
You from Tx?
Hi;
Moore Ford in North Little Rock would get some in that were intended to draw sales to the more loaded ones. We Arkies liked economy even then !
LOL! I hear you on that!
Ok gang....I managed to get the wheels coated in Molotow and the tires all decaled and completed. I didn't use the front wheels with the Molotow on them in the following pictures because this stuff has a minimum cure out of 48 hours. The rears I could handle somewhat because of the dish in the wheels but here's where we're at right now with the wheels/ tires.
and then I found my headers that are going to give me the perfect clearance. I just cut the flanges off of them and modified the header extensions on the Jo-Han headers to match up with the headers and we're all set. Another major hurdle of this build overcome.
Solid progress there Bro. Very nice finish on the wheels and modification to the headers. The stance looks fabulous.
Thanks Joe! So far so good but have alot more in the modification department to tackle.
Another thing that this kit is totally lacking in is the proper engine bay. I turned to the 67 Mustang kit for this since it's a fairly close match.
On the right is an OOB engine bay in my other Maverick. After some mods and some trimming I've got the initial fit obtained. It's workable and looks like it should do the trick after some more fancy footwork.
That will surely be a more convincing look. Well done on the work. Not sure I can handle hacking up a nice fastback to save a Maverick; you have more courage than I.

Excellent modification Joe. Looks that is going to work out very well. It's certainly going to be a vast improvement. I understand hacking up the Mustang kit as they are very easy to come by.
That's moving along nicely and those Maverick molds gotta be somewhere?
Nick.
Thanks Joe and Nick!
Nick: You can get a resin Maverick kit on ebay. Just gotta use the AMT 67/68 Fastback kits as a platform. Here's the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SMH-Resins-1971-Maverick-Grabber-resin/202652976445?hash=item2f2f0f053d:g:eCAAAOSwj61csg3F
Well gang....progress FINALLY. I've been hard at work on this bad boy and have not posted anything due to trying to hit the bench a little harder. Here she is in the primer stage: and after I let that all dry out I hit it with color (Tamiya Pure Red dispensed from the can and shot through the AB) the next day. Didn't have to do ANY sanding to the primer coat. A couple of mock ups once the color coat had dried....couldn't help myself but to do this but have to admit that Mavericks look a little out of the ordinary in red: Was able to tuck the rear tires a little further inward as well. Still gotta raise the front of the car a smidgen and bring those front tires outward a little. I'll get there......
Oh ya! Looking bad ass
Thanks,
John
She's looking good! If you'll allow me to slip on my judge's cap for a moment, this may help you when it comes contest time. Make sure all of the ejector pin marks are taken care of, even on the bottom of the chassis. While we're not allowed to pickup the models anymore, if you put it on a mirrored base to show off the underside they will be found. This goes for the hood as well. I can and will pick it up if it's left off to show the work in the engine compartment. Nationals brings out a lot models and the first couple of rounds are basically culls. You're going to have to rub out the paint on the body. I realize that the paint finish that's on there now is probably as good or better than what came from the factory, but the IPMS car judges tend to look for showcar finishes. I was looking at the pics of the real thing and it looks like at least the stickers in the orange area on the body were clear coated over (this is noticeable even in the period pic). I would gloss coat the entire body after the decals are applied and then rub it out. The tires and wheels look great as they are now. I realize that I may have told you things you already knew, but I've told you things I've seen from past experiences as a judge that have knocked out otherwise potential award winners. I look forward to more and hopefully seeing it live in San Marcos.
keavdog Oh ya! Looking bad ass
Thanks be to you as well lewbud. I appreciate all of your input here. Believe me.....I aint done with the paint job on this rascal by a LONGSHOT.
Terrific start to the paint job Joe. I kind of relate to your issue with struggling with red on a Maverick. It's certainly something we're not "trained" to seeing. With that said, I think it will really pop once you get it all decaled up and give it the thorough Joe treatment. As always, I'm looking forward to watching you put the show stopping works to it.
Looking good, Joe.
You make all the mods look so easy.
Looks really really good. I don't recall ever seeing a red Mav either. Usually browns and light greens and yellows, real pale pastel colors. It looks very tough with the red and those tires.
