New scratch built Bunker diorama
Posted by Nick Nasta on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 7:49 PM
Hey guys. I have been busy building a bunker/beach head diorama scene in 1/35 scale.
I have to add barbed wire, soldiers, water puddles and what ever else I can think of. Let me know what you guys think so far. I made the cannon also from scratch. I saw a photo of a gun like this in a photo along the Normandy coast. I was thinking about having USA soldiers climbing up both sides getting ready to finish the job against the Germans who are alive in the bunker.
Regards,
Nick

Thanks guys for the compliments. The soldiers pictured are just for show so you can see the size of the diorama. My plans are to have a couple of German soldiers inside the bunker shooting out at the Americans as they are advancing on the left and right of the bunker. I'll also have a couple of dead soldiers in the sand.
The bunker slides out so I can position the men that I want to use inside. I have the barbed wire made and ready to be positioned. When this diorama is complete it will be available if anyone is seriously interested. I like the way it is coming out so far, maybe I will keep it. lol
Regards,

Nick :)

Looks great , Nick. Convincing groundwork, lot of nice detail, job well done. How about a pic of the bunker pulled out, to see the interior?

Hey Nick,

Eeven so I'm not an armour gu, I like your work pretty much! It's always good for a change to see someone building something scratch and not using a kit.

What I would like  say concerning your composition of that bunker, is that there would be perhaps somekind of additional machine gun emplacement just to make sure no one gets THAT close to the bunker and its gun crew which would be almost unable to protect themselves against your soldiers without risking their own life when sticking their noses to far out of that bunker.

Perhaps you can find some additional tips for your bunker if you flip throught the pictures of various bunkers which a friend of mine photographed during this tour through the Normandy. Here is the link:

Thanks Rene for your excellent input.

I checked out the awesome bunker photos on that web site which you mentioned and I came up with a fantastic idea to solve my bunker problem.

I need to post new photos soon because I revamped the way the bunker looks by making it wider and hollowing out the back for easy access for figure placement.

I took a little vacation from completing the bunker because I started making winter evergreen trees for a possible Battle of the Bulge scene.
I will have approx. 12+ soldiers in the bunker diorama scene when it is fin.

Thanks again Rene and the rest of you guys for your support.
I love scratch building!

Nick

Hey Nick,

no problem, I'm really glad to hear that I have been of some help and that you have found perhaps a few good ideas. Make sure to come back to this website, cause I will pretty soon post even more pcitures whoich I took and some more which my friend took, we still have a few hundred more, if I only can find the time to post them all.

Keep on modeling

Bunker update. I slightly changed the style of the bunker. Below the bunker I will be making a machine gun nest built into the side of the dirt wall.

 That's simply awsome.. stunning!

May I ask what you used to make this excellent diorama? And especially, what are the main groundframe and bunker made out of?

Also, what kind of geographical location is this representating?

Ai, just noticed... The barricades that are closest to the bunker, the pole with the mine on... They were made to be just under water, and when these get underwater the water will get to where the MG are going to be... if you understand...?

And is it relistic with the iron cross infront of the bunker?

Not trying to be an arse or anything here... It's still excellent!!

Thanks HUXY for your compliments.
Just wait until I'm finished.
I noticed your from Norway.
My mother's side of the family are from Oslo, Norway.
That's where I get my square head from. lol
I made the bunker, stones and base from pink styrofoam.
This geographical location was taken from my imagination.
It was going to be the walls at Normandy, France but I got carried away making those stones which changed the location.
The Tellermines are shown at low tide, that's why they are up so high. I had thoughts of bringing them closer to the ground later on. They are not permanent to the diorama. I had an idea of making a MG Nest in the dirt wall beneath the bunker, but it might be too close to the water line when the tide comes in.
My original thought was to put sand bags on top of the bunker and place a MG nest there.
I'm not sure about the Iron Cross being for real.
I added the cross because I thought it would look good. lol
I like to use some artistic imagination when I build unless I have to build for a client who wants the real deal. Then I build by the book, so to speak.
This diorama I started making for myself because I was bored one day. lol.
It's not going to be complete for some time because it's not a priority. I have pieces of soldiers and parts all over the place just waiting to be completed. Oh boy. I had to make 15 trees first before I could get back to the bunker business. Just when I thought I would be able to get back to the bunker diorama, something else came up and I'm now going to have to build a bunch of props for some promotional work for a major 1/32 scale toy soldier manufacturer. I guess that's a good thing. lol
Thanks again HUXY!
Regards,
Nick

Thanks for the nice reply! And I guessed it was some fictional location :) and for the iron cross, hello good ol' artistic license, eh?

But even if you place the MG ontop of the bunker, wouldn't the water be too close to the bunker itself? I don't really know for sure, but wouldn't the structure kind of getting destroyed after a while? I guess artistic lisenceis coming back again here :) The placing of them looks pretty awsome, but after my guess, just a little unrealistic... but as said, this build is more fictional.. if you know what I mean...

So you got Norwegian blood? Lucky you Party [party]  I'm from further up north, born in Trondheim but live in Kristiansund just south of Tr.heim ;)

What you mean you got the square heads from Norway? Black Eye [B)]

Oh, where do you actually buy pink styrofoam? Been looking around for quite a while... It seems to be the perfect thing to work with!  And yeah, can't wait for this to be done.. seems so amazing!

G'day Nick, Awesome work there!...I'm anxious to see it complete. But it's a real nice start to something you can keep adding to..something a Legion museum will display.

Keep young......Keep modeling.  I am never lost....just exploring new ground

Thanks THE COD for the compliments.
I was working on it today and decided not to use figures on this diorama.
I'll let whoever buys it place their own figures throughout it the way they want to.
I placed supports for the barbed wire which I will add real soon.
I lowered the Tellermines and rusted the 55 gallon drums.
I also added a low grass or vegetation on top of the bunker in certain locations.
Photos will follow in a few days. I hope. lol
Thanks for commenting.

Nick

That looks awesome. I am currently doing a 1/35 of Omaha Beach.  Amazing detail.  I'm no expert, but I think that your mine traps are backwards.  They point out to sea, so that enemy landing craft would hit the mine on the long pole.  Like I said, no expert but I have a library of WW2 books.  Pretty particular bout WW2 as a study.  Like I said, amazing detail and all around very well done.

I think that the mines are too close as the bunker would be right in the blast zone spraying the front of the bunker with the mine's shot.

True, but I didn't have much room to work with so I worked with what I had. The rest is Bunker history :-)

Sorry bout the mines thing.  I can barely make them out from the photos.  I do agree that they may be a little close for the defenders comfort.  However, still a superb dio as a testament to skill.
