That makes sense, I think I'm going to do a OIF dio with some 1/35 guys made up as 101st Airborne guys and I'm with you, I think I'm going to mix in the ACU unifoms with woodland and OD packs etc.

Thanks again for checkin this one out

Even as late as '07, we were still using mixed-matched items. I never used any woodland stuff, but I had plenty of gear that was desert colors. Knee pads, pouches, weapon accessories, etc. My patrol bag was all tan. I even used a tan colored piece from a camo net for cover. Where I was, it blended better than the ACUs.

I'd say that you're spot on to mix a few things, but I wouldn't go over-board .... well, depending on the year that you're going for. I'd say from '06 on, everything is pretty well matched, but not 100%. However, I wouldn't go for something that looked like a kaliedoscope!

haha yeah, no kaliedoscope Sad [:(] lol but sounds good to me- the woodland was almost completely fazed out though?

haha I'll use your 1/16 OIF figure as my reference point- that looks awesome

I wouldn't say fazed out. I still had an OD pack that I used in the truck, just not out on patrols.

I saw a few OD pouches here and there, but not very often.

Hey- I'd love to put some up here, actually, I had glued on all the arms and finished the pattern, all I have left to do is put on the heads/weapons and start up the shading and weathering, but I left home and my camera was dead- I've been trying to get my brother to take pictures... tonight I'll call him and make him Smile [:)]

Thanks a lot, that's definitly a complement coming from you after you've posted those updates. I'm not sure if I can get mine to that level, but thanks for giving me something to shoot for.

-hey can you give me a quick tip on the shading- did you use the digital "dark" color to do the shadows and the digital light "tan"ish color for the highlights? Or was it different colors completely? Because I was thinking with my MARPAT to use the dark pixel colors as the shadding too, then just using like a light, almost fleshtone color for the highlights... but if there too close in color I'm wonding if they might blend too much?

Thanks

Yes, BUT that's just how it worked out for me. How I generally do the shading/ highlights is a take a lightened-up version of the base for the highlights and a darkened version of the base for the shadows. However, in this instance, a darkened color of the base would have been washed out by the dark-tone color, so yes, I used a little darker color of the dark-tone. I generally mix my shadow colors with dark greys .... NEVER black. It's too harsh. However, if the crease is really deep, for example on my OIF figure where the vest meets the arms, I used a little bit a black mixed in with my dark grey shadow color. I always do my highlights first as it's easier to blend the shadows in second rather then blending the highlights into the shadows. I just use a flat brush, wiped of almost all the paint for the highlights. For the shadows, I use a 000. Dip it in, touch it to a papertowel to draw off that first heavy drop, and then precisely "paint" the underside of folds. For deep creases, skip the towel, and let the color flow into the crease. I hardly ever go back over the same area twice. At least not in that sitting. If I do, it's b/c I've come back to it and thought that it needed a little more.

Hope that helps.

Yeah- that helped out a lot! Thanks, and for your tips, I have some pictures. Laugh [(-D] My brother "psstoff995's lbro" was nice enough to take them for me, twice, as I got a little nitpicky on some that were a little out of focus Whistling [:-^]

I'm hesitant to post them after these, but... you asked for it!

Hey, that's nice work! Don't worry about what they look like right now. You'll see that pop you're looking for once you start in with the HLs and shading.

I liek the figure in the background. Looks like he's trying to sneak out someplace! You don't have any Barbie dolls around do you!?! Laugh [(-D]

Figured I'd go ahead and stick it up here to prove I am doing something

The M4s are both mocked up at the moment, the slings are going to be fun... same with the radio wires... Sigh [sigh]

-M4s

-Slings (masking tape, foil)

-Radio wires (that's was fun to paint Grumpy [|(])

-Some shading work on the uniforms

-Sealer coat and pastel dust

-Maybe a larger wooden base with a name plate? (Not to steal anyone's ideas Tongue [:P])

psst, Give the maksing tape a run for the slings. If you haven't worked with it before, I think that you'll find it's pretty easy going.

Things look grea tthus far. Keep us posted.

Well... these took me an hour to paint and stick on. Not sure if that's fast or slow... I guess it's about average for me. I guess the problem isn't that I'm a slow builder as much as I'm just never at the bench Grumpy [|(]

Anyway! Here they are, some putty and CA glue tacking them to the figures. Got something to hang the masking tape slings from now.

Still got the wires to figure out (I have them, I'm just wondering how I'm going to stick em on and paint them.)

Oh well- quick update and off to my Dads for the weekend- then 4 hour drive to school, these guys will be tagging along this time. I'll finish it quick!!!.......ish...maybe.

Usually don't enjoy close ups, but I just wanted to show the slight variation of blacks and grays I used on the M4, the polkadot look of my MARPAT illusion becomes apparent very quickly though Blush [:I]

The head on the descending figure is OOB, the head on the guy yelling directions and pointing like he's on a soap opera was modified to include the watch cap and the beard (had a moustache and looked like he had gelled his hair in a little wave or something...)

-Here let me just take one of the box art

Anyway- you can see on my last post that the guy in glasses looks much more professionally done haha I'm still getting the hang of Magic Sculpt

Thanks! haha yeah I know- but it's a good challege and if you can pull it off in 1/16 there's no reason I can't start throwing together 1/35 guys a little faster.

This one's been half built for ages!

And I spent one night getting all these guys to the same spot... but now they're just sitting around too... Whistling [:-^]

Well I hope you can check back soon, good luck on the Special Forces Quarterback er uh I mean Quick Build Tongue [:P]- I hope you can knock it in that 24 hour build time you were shooting for!

Yeah, me too. I'm going to spend a few more hours on it tonight, and then really crank on it tomorrow. Maybe .... juuuuuuuust maybe, I can get it pulled off.

I think that you'll have plenty of time at school to pull together your 1/35 guys. While in school, I stuck to 1/35 as they were easier to put together and could be packed up fairly quickly.

.... but, hmmmmm..... I thought this was the thread for your 120mm guys!?! Ooop, caught you double-threading ....

... get back to work buddy! (hehe!)

hahaha caught me double threading?! Oh right this is my MARPAT- I must have gotten too used to the Mosul thread Laugh [(-D]haha

Yeah, I've been working on the 1/24 Ford at school- thats kinda big but narrow fits in a small box. I'm bringing this little vignette with me and I have a few Dragon 1/35's in the mail so I'll be able to have a nice little workbench... on my dresser.

DUDE!!! You DID add the beard!!! (sorry. yes, your friend is a little slow....) I just caught that!

That's a nice touch! I needed to say to that the watch cap was a nice touch. I always thought that the originaly guys hair looked a little "do-ed" up.

haha a lot of do-ed up! Thanks guys, that definitly makes me feel a little better at my putty work. I was trying to make the two models look a little more like they were part of the same Op. Easiest way to do it was the matching hat/facial growth.

I think if I had to do it again, I'd definitly round out the hat more like the original kit one, this one looks a little puffed up- I think if I had the pre cap figure in front of me when I was sculping that might have helped Sigh [sigh]

Way to go on saving the environment btw guys. With the economy going the way it is we cant be friviously posting new posts all the times when other perfectly good posts are just sitting around! Laugh [(-D]

Thanks again for the thumbs up camo- don't worry I wont tell anyone about your record breaking trip- I usually make my 4 hour one in 3 and a half Whistling [:-^]

Laugh [(-D]. and yes, even if i did "take it over" (at times) we all had a really great laugh at models expense....LOL. j/k buddy.

p.o, i wouldnt do anything with the facial hair or hat...everytime i look at it...the dude looks exactly like and reminds me totally of "the edge" from u2. (that's a guitar player from a real band p.o....i know your generation doesnt know what one of those fancy things are except what ya read in your history books!!! Propeller [8-]. but if by chance ya might have caught a glimpse of him from the news (if ya watch it) you just might agree!!! lol
